Description

O. F. RUSET.
Brush.
No. 105,130. Patented July 5, 1870.
haired fittttefi pamcram CHARLES F. RUSET, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 105,130, dated July 5, 1870.
IMPROVED BRUSH.
a longitudinal sectional view of my improved brush.
My invent-ion consists in a brush, the handle and bristles of which are united by a cap or band, composed of India rubber, guttapercha, or any other suitable material or composition capable of assuming a plastic state and of being afterward hardened, when said cap or band, in which the bristles are imbedded, not only encompasses and surmounts the inner ends of the bristles, but forms an internal packing or binding to them as inserted in a bunch, and receives the inner end of the handle in or through it, under such a construction of the parts as establishes lock of said handle, and a firm union of the handle, bristles, and cap, without the use of a perforated plate for the separate insertion of the bristles in tufts, and whereby a neat, light, cheap, and durable brush is produced, constitutinga new article of manufacture.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, which represents a dust or painters brush, but the invention is also applicable to other kinds of brushes A is the handle, formed, at or near its inner end, with a swell or collar, a, and with a protruding portion, I), preferably of taper shape, to enter within an inner ring, B, or binding to the bristles O, as the latter are imbedded or made to project, at their inner ends, in the form of a bunch, within the outer band or cap D, that is made to encompass and surmount the inner ends of the bristles, and to inclose and form an outer lock or binding to the handle at its inner end.
The outer band or cap D and inner ring portion B are madeof lndia rubber, gutta-percha,or other suitable material or composition capable of assuming a plastic state, and of being afterward hardened, which affords every'facility for insertion of the bristles, and, by the fit of the parts as shown and described, secures the bristles against'extraction, and firmly unites in a solid mass, as it were,'the handle, bristles, and cap,
with an interior support to the bristles as arranged in a bunch within the cap.
Various means may be employed for making this improved brush, but it is preferred to produce the sameby or through the agency of a press, operating in conjunction with a divided box and conical-shaped wedge, as follows, thus:
'lhe bristles are temporarily tied together in a bunch, and passed downwardly through a divided box, arranged in the bed of the press, till their upper edges project sufliciently below the top of the box, that may be enlarged at itsnpper portion to receive within it, and around the upper ends of the bristles, a gutta-percha ring.
A conically-shaped wedge is then driven down the center of the bunch of bristles, to give to them, after its extraction, a spread form, and to make way for the inner ring B of gutta-percha, which is slipped to its place within the bristles, and made to rest on top of the conical wedge.
Au irregular lump 0fgutt-a-percha,-in a plastic state, and open at its center, is then laid on top of the bristles, and a follower, constructed to carry the'handle through it, and so that the inner end of the handle projects below it, brought down and made to enter the box, and caused to compress into a united mass the outer ring and lump, after which the mass forming the cap and inner ring holding the brush is vulcanized, and the box subsequently opened and conical wedge drawn out.
This mode of mnnufacture I make the subject of a separate application for Letters Patent.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim, as a new article of manufacture- A brush, composed of an outer band or cap, D, and
'inner ring or binding B, both of soft or plastic material capahle of being hardened, a handle, A, made to project at its inner end within or through the cap, and bristles 0, arranged in the form of a bunch, and supported externally and internally where the same are united with the handle, substantially as specified.
