PATENT OFFICE.
KAY, OF LETART, WEST VIRGINIA.
HORSE-DETACHEAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,127, dated September 14, 1886.
Application filed March 9, 1886.
- Be it known that we, FRANKLIN THOMAS and GEORGE M. KAY, of 'Letart, in the county of Mason and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Single-Tree, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a single-tree whereed to be easily. withdrawn from the traces for detaching the horse in case he becomes unmanageable; and the invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding-parts in both thefigures.
Figure l is a broken rear elevation of our new and improved single-tree, showing the traces held by the spring-hooks; and Fig. 2 is aplan view of the same.
The wooden portion Aof the single-tree has the central passage, a, made through it, by which it may be attached to thills or to a double-tree for use. At its ends the singletree is strengthened by the iron or steel plates b, which clasp and protect the single-tree at its upper and lower edges, the plates being secured by the through-bolts or rivets c c.
d d are horizontal passages made in the singletree nearits ends, in which the traces B B are held by the points e e ofthe spring-hooks G O, which points reach down through the vertical openings ff, made through the single-tree and plates 2) in line with the center of the horizontal passages d.
The hooks O are looped to form the eyes 9 Serial No. 194,571. (No model.)
In the eyes 9 are placed thelinks j, to which 7 the ends of the detaching cord or rod D are attached, and secured to the single-tree so as to straddle the plates h are the U-shaped irons E E,which serve, first, as guides to the up and down movement of the hooks G, and, secondly, as stops to the upward movement of the hooks O, to prevent them from being raised upward too far by pulling upon the cord D or the cord D, which is attached to the center of the cord D, and is designed to reach to or into the vehicle in easy reach of the driver, so that in case of any accident, or in case the horse or horses become unmanageable, by pulling upon the cord D, the hooks C may be lifted so as to raise the points eout of the traces B, and thus detach the horse or horses from the vehicle.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the single-tree A, having the trace-apertures (l in its ends, of the springs O, looped to form the eyes g, and then bent down to form the points 0, the keepers E, the links 7', secured in the eyes 9, and the cords or rods D, secured to the links, substantially as herein shown and described.
