  • Printing machines particularly rotary duplicating machines, are known which can be operated to print a selected number of lines under the control of printing cams respectively associated with different numbers of printing lines. It is also known to automatically reset the printing cams by a spring biassed stepping mechanism so that the next follOWing group of lines is printed.

  • springs 55 and 56 pull the pawl means 8 and 9 back to its initial position shown in FIG. 3 so that shifting pawl 9 releases the ratchet wheel 10, and spiral spring 53 pulls ratchet wheel 10 to a position in which the next tooth thereof abuts locking pawl 8 so that printing cam 12 is reset to a position in which during the next revolution of printing roller 5 with master sheet 46, the next following line is printed.
  • the spiral spring 53 can be tensioned, and the stepping mechanism wound up by a motor driven gear 57 meshing with gear 58 on bushing 11.

Due to the shape of the second control cam 59, actuating means 72, 73 is still inoperative, and not placed in the path of shifting pawl 9, and it may be noted that FIG. 2 does not show control earns 59 and 60, in the position for the presently described operation of printing two lines, but in an actuated position for the printing of three lines.
  • shifting pawl 9 is engaged by actuating means 69, 71 and the stepping mechanism is operated to turn the printing cam 12, 15 and 16 two steps back.
  • linkage 29, 32, 33, 34 shifts printing cams 15 and 16 to a position in which they engage cam follower 17 and 18 during rotation of printing roller 5 and ratchet wheel 10 so that three lines are printed.

  • setting means 47 When the automatic resetting and transport of the printing cams is not desired, and setting means 47 is released from its illustrated position, and shifted in longitudinal direction until the arresting means 48 engages the arresting recess 75 in setting means 47. Since actuating means 69, 71 and 72, 73 are mounted on setting means 47, they are displaced to an inoperative position in which they cannot be engaged by control cams 60 and 59 when the same are displaced by link 33. Actuating lever 51 with actuating roller 49 is also displaced to an inoperative position in which roller 49 is located outside of the path of shifting pawl 9.
  • Apparatus for printing selected numbers of lines comprising printing means; operating means for said printing means including cam follower means having an operative position for causing printing of successive lines; a predetermined number of printing cams respectively correlated with different numbers of lines and having operative positions for moving said cam follower means to said operative position for causing said printing means to print different numbers of lines, respectively, and inoperative positions; drive means for said printing means and for rotating said printing cams in a printing direction; a biassed stepping mechanism connected with said printing cams for rotation and having a normal position blocking rotation of said printing cams in the direction opposite to said printing direction, and a released position for turning said printing cams in said opposite direction; a plurality of actuating means respectively associated with different numbers of lines, each actuating means being movable between an inoperative position and an actuating position for moving said stepping mechanism to said released position after rotation of said printing cams in said printing direction for causing the printing of the respective number of lines, and for respectively holding said stepping mechanism in said released position while the same resets said

  • Apparatus as claimed in claim 4 comprising a setting means connected with said actuating means and having a normal position in which said actuating means are operated by said control cam means, and a displaced position in which said actuating means are spaced from said control cam means and are not operated by the same so that said stepping mechanism does not turn said printing cams in said opposite direction.
  • said stepping mechanism includes a rotary driven member driven by said drive means, spring loaded pawl means mounted on said driven member, a ratchet wheel engaged in said normal position by said pawl means and blocked by the same against rotation in said opposite direction, and released by the same in said releasing position, said ratchet wheel being connected with said printing cams for rotation, and spring means connected with said ratchet wheel for biassing the same to turn with said printing cams in said opposite directions when said pawl means release said ratchet wheel; and wherein said actuating means in said actuating position are located in the path of said pawl means during rotation of said driven member so that said spring loaded pawl means is operated by said actuating means to release said ratchet wheel, and then engages the same when said pawl means has passed beyond said actuating means.
  • Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 comprising a driven member rotated by said stepping mechanism; wherein said printing cams are mounted on said driven member axially movable on the same between inoperative positions spaced from said cam follower means, and said operative positions, said printing cams being connected with said driven member for rotation, and comprising means for moving said printing cams selectively between said inoperative and operative positions.
  • said means for moving said printing cams include linkage means connected with said manually operated means and displaced by the same in said selecting positions of the same to move the respective printing cam to the operative position thereof so that in each selecting position of said manually operated means, the cam correlated with the respective number of lines is in said operative position cooperating with said cam follower means.
  • Apparatus as claimed in claim 9 comprising a shifting member secured to said printing cams for rotation and axial movement, and having an annular guide means; and wherein said linkage means include a bail mounted for turning movement and having slide members secured slidably guided on said guide means so that when said linkage means with said bad is displaced by said manually operated means, said printing cams are axially displaced between said inoperative and operative positions.
  • said linkage means include a lever having a guide slot; and wherein said manually operated means includes a rod having a cranked end portion located in said guide slot so that turning movement of said manually operated means with said rod displaces said lever and linkage means.
  • said printing cams are individually movable between inoperative positions spaced from said cam follower means and said operative positions; comprising link-age means connecting said manually operated means with said printing cams so that in each selecting position of said manually operated means, the printing cam correlated with the respective number of lines is in said operative position cooperating with said cam follower means; wherein said linkage means is operatively connected with said control cam means for operating the same under the control of said manually operated means, and comprising an actuating means correlated with a single printed line, and being connected with said linkage means and operated b the same between an inoperative position, and an actuated position for moving said stepping mechanism to said released position; and a printing cam for causing printing of a single line having only one position cooperating with said cam follower means and being driven by said drive means so that only single lines are printed in one selecting position of said manually operated means in which the printing cams of said plurality of printing cams are in said inoperative position.
  • Apparatus for printing selected numbers of lines comprising printing means; operating means for said printing means including cam follower means having an operative position for causing printing of successive lines; a predetermined number of printing cams respectively correlated with different numbers of lines and having operative positions for moving said cam follower means to said operative position for causing said printing means to print difierent numbers of lines, respectively, and inoperative positions; drive means for said printing means and for rotating said printing cams in a printing direction; a biassed stepping mechanism connected with said printing cams for rotation and having a normal position blocking rotation of said printing cams in the direction opposite to said printing direction, and a released position for turning cams in said opposite direction; a plurality of actuating means respectively associated with different numbers of lines, each actuating means being movable between an inoperative position and an actuating position for moving said stepping mechanism to said released position after rotation of said printing cams in said printing direction for causing the printing of the respective number of lines, and for respectively holding said stepping mechanism in said released position while the same resets
