Description

NOV. 11, 1969 w, ENGUSH WINDOW SIGN HANGER 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 Filed Oct. 31, 1967 Nov. 11, 1969 w. J. ENGLISH WINDOW SIGN HANGER 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Oct. 31, 19 67 United States Patent US. Cl. 29419 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A device for placing signs in display windows at a relatively high elevation while the operator stands on the floor and comprising an extensible pole hanger with means forming a recess at an end thereof, a sign hanging rod to which the sign is attached, said rod having a central depending member receivable in said recess so that the rod rests on the extensible pole hanger transversely thereof and can be raised to the elevation desired, in combination with a pair of spaced hooks mounted on the display window at the interior side thereof and receiving the sign hanging rod thereon and supporting the same in easily removable condition, the hooks being generally permanently in place on the window and the sign itself having no connection or securing means with respect to the window other than the hanging rod and the hooks.
This invention relates to a new and improved window sign hanger particularly adapted for hanging relatively large signs at elevated positions in e.g. store windows so that they are visible from the outside without attaching the signs in any way directly to the glass, and the invention contemplates the use of a pair of spaced hooks substantially permanently mounted at elevated positions on the window-glass at the inside thereof in combination with an elongated sign hanging rod, longer than the width of the sign to be hung, to which the sign may be attached by e.g. tape so that the rod has outstanding ends adapted to be placed on the hooks, thus suspending the sign in the window without however directly attaching the sign in anyway to the glass.
The sign hanging rod is provided centrally thereof with a short right-angled leg which is received in the open end of a tubular elevating pole, which is preferably extensible. Thus the sign is attached to the sign hanging rod and the operator inserts the leg thereof in the pole, with the sign depending from the rod, and thereby easily lifts the rod and sets it on the hooks. The sign can be easily removed by the use of the same pole and a new sign quickly and easily applied.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view illustrating the use of the device, and
FIG. 2 is a perspective view on an enlarged scale illustrating details of the sign hanging rod and the pole hanger.
In disclosing the present invention, FIG. 1 shows a store Window or the like 10, it being understood that the view is at the inside of the store or like establishment where a temporary sign 12 is desired to be applied to the window at the inside thereof. It will be appreciated that in the absence of the present invention, and as usually 3,477,757 Patented Nov. 11, 1969 practiced, a sign such as that at 12 is mounted directly on the interior surface of the window by means of pressuresensitive tape particularly at the top thereof, so that it is necessary to use a ladder, and the glass has to be cleaned when the sign is changed.
In the present case however there are provided a pair of hooks which are indicated at 14, '14 and these are mounted directly on the interior surface of the glass in an elevated condition and on the same level by any desired means such as pressure-sensitive adhesives, epoxy, etc.
These hooks provide a support for a sign hanging rod generally indicated at 16, this rod having a length greater than the width of the sign 12 to be hung and having at the rear face thereof indicated at 18 in FIG. 2, a rightangular extending leg 20.
The sign 12 is attached to the forward face away from the observer in FIG. 2 by any means such as for instance a pressure-sensitive tape or adhesive and the sign is located centrally with respect to the hanging rod 16 so that the same is provided with outwardly extending ends adapted to be set onto the hooks 14.
In order to elevate the sign hanging rod and attached sign, a pole hanger 22 is used, this being tubular as shown at 24 in FIG. 2 and receiving the leg 20 therein at the upper end thereof at 26. By the use of the pole 22 and as clearly illustrated in FIG. 1, the sign hanging rod and attached sign is elevated to be set on the hooks and left there as long as desired. Ordinarily the pole 22 will have a telescopic extension 23 thereon together with a known type of clamp 24 by which it is held as shown in FIG. 1.
It will be seen that the sign is not connected with the window-glass in any way so that it is not necessary to rip it to get it down, nor is it necessary to clean off the adhesive or tape which was used to secure the sign in place on the glass in the prior art. A new sign is easily applied in place of sign 12 when it is desired to change signs and of course the sign being at the interior of the store is clearly visible through the window and is protected against the elements, etc. The sign is adapted to be attached to one side only of the sign hanging rod 16 as described and the projection or leg 20 is at the other side of the rod so that the upper end 26 of pole 22 does not injure the sign, usually made of paper, when it is elevated thereby to be hung on the hooks 14.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth :in the claims, but what I claim is:
1. The combination of a display window having mounted thereon in a relatively elevated position a pair of supports in spaced relationship and substantially on an even level with each other, and a sign to be mounted on the supports,
with means mounting the sign on said supports, said means comprising a pole, a sign hanging rod, the sign being attached to said sign hanging rod, the latter being adapted to rest on said supports in horizontal condition with the sign depending therefrom and visible through the display window,
and a detachable connection between one end of the pole and a center portion of said sign hanging rod, said detachable connection including a depending member on said rod, means forming a recess in one end of the pole for receiving said depending member in supported condition thereon,
the sign hanging rod being removably mounted on the pole' at the recessed'end thereof, and'raised with sign attached, into position and hung on said supports, said sign and rod being easily removable with respect thereto by said pole.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said sign hanging rod has a length relative to the sign to be hung to extend beyond the side marginal edges of the sign, and said supports being spaced apart a greater distance than the width of the sign.
