Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 34.745, dated March 25, 1862.

Be it known that I, OTTO-ERNs'r, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented, made, and 'applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Tobacco-Tubes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construc tion and operation of the same, referencebeing had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specication, wherein- Figure l is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section, of my improved tobaccotube.

The nature of my said invention consists in a receptacle or tube to contain tobacco, and
provided with a tube for the smoke, so fitted that only a portion of the tobacco is ignited at one time, and the tobaccois pressed forward as consumed, and, being dry and free from the condensations of vapor,burns much more freely and pleasantly than would be the case if the smokeand products of combustion were drawn through the mass of tobacco.

The spring e keeps the tobacco that is pressed into the tube a forward toward and against the perforated screW-capf, and the consumption of the tobacco is between this cap f and holes ato 0in the tube c, thedraft being drawn into the said tubec at this point, hence al1 the tobacco behind that point is unacted on and unconsumed until the consumption of the tobacco in front thereof allows. the spring ev to press said tobacco forward, as required.
