Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. RUTH, OF ATALISSA, IOWVA.
COMBINED DOUBLE DES'K AND BOOK-CASE.
SPECIFIATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 347,278, dated August 10, 1886.
Application filed January 16,1886. Serial No. 189,749. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. RUTH, of Atalissa, in thecounty of Muscatine and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Combined Double Desk and Book-Case, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved stationary double desk and revolving book-case, which is simple in construction, strong and durable, and very convenient and handy in use.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and then pointed outin the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts inall the figures.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved comhined stationary desk and book-case. Fig. 2 is a cross'sectional view of the same on the line m as, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line y 3 Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view ofthe base-block, the shaft be ing shown in section.
The four uprights A are secured on the crossed basebars B, at or near the ends of the same, and on the upper ends of the said uprights A the square top plate, 0, of the desk is secured, to two opposite edges of which the desk-wings D are hinged in such a manner that theycan be folded on the top plate, C; or the said wings may be otherwise connected to the top plate. Sliding supports or braces E, for the wings, are provided in the top plate, 0, and are provided at their outer ends with knobs E, to facilitate pulling them out. The said sliding supports are provided with the stops E on their inner ends, as shown in Fig. 2.
In the upper surface the recess F, for inkstands, and the grooves G, for receiving pen-holders, pencils, &O., are provided.
On the crossed base-bars B the base-block H is secured, and in said block H and the top plate, (3, the shaft J isjournaled, and to 0 the same the revolving book-case is secured,
which is formed of the central square box, K, resting on the circular bottom plate, L, which may rest and run upon rollers M, pivoted in the top of the base-block H. On the of the top plate, C,
four corners of the said box Kthe four triangular upright secti'onsN are secured, which form the square compartments 0, for receiving the books. Notched or toothed upright bars 1? are secured in the corners of the compartments O, and support the slats Q, on which the adjustable shelves R rest.
Drawers or shelves may be provided in the triangular sections N, and drawers and pigeonholes may also be provided in the compartments 0. The shelves can easily be adjusted to suit books of different sizes.
The revolving bookcase, which is octagonal, can easily be revolved between the uprights A, and any desired book can thus be reached very easily without moving the desk.
The several sections and compartments of the book-case may be provided with hinged or sliding doors having glass or panel filling.
The desk can be closed very easily by swinging the wings on the top plate. The part below the desks may be square, so as to be used for a bureau; or, if desired, the revolving book-case can be above the desks. Both the upper and lower sections may be made to rotate, and the desk, either single or double, to remain stationary.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a double stationary desk, of the shaft J, journaled below the top plate of said desk, the square box K on the said shaft, the triangular sections N on the corners of the box K, and shelves or drawers in the compartments 0, formed between the sections N, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with the base-bars B, I
the uprights A, and the stationary top plate, 0, of the base-block H, shaft J, the box K, the sections N, held on the corners of the same, the rollers M in the top of'the baseblock, and the bottom plate, L, resting on the rollers M, and on which plate L the box K is secured, substantially as herein shown and described.
