Description

UNITED STATES P TENT Qrrrce.
WILLIAM F. TRACY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
CASTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 347,261, dated August 10, 1886.
Application filed Juno 8, 1886. Serial No. 204,488. (No model.)
the spindle of the caster in the socket shall at the same time hold the two parts of the socket together.
My invention therefore consists in the details of construction hereinafter fully de-.
scribed, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a.central *vertical section of a table leg with my improved caster in place, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line m w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the upper portion of the socket.
In these drawings, A represents the leg of the article of furniture to which the caster is applied. A cavity, a, is made in the leg, as
usual, and a metallic case or socket composed of two parts is fitted thereto, havinga flange upon the lower end which is adapted to fit over the end of the leg. The socket is made in two parts, each part being cut away, as shown at b b, for a purpose hereinafter eX- plained. Upon the socket are two peripheral flanges, c c. A piece'of Wire, K, is wound around the socket close up against the under sides of the two flanges c c, said wire being wound tightly and resting upon the two edges of the cut-away portion of the socket, the wire thus forming practically a chord of an are.
that after the head of the spindle is forced by U it, it will allow free movement to the spindle, owing to the reduced neck thereof. When the spindle is inserted in the socket, the rounded head forces its way by the wire, said wire giving a little to allow the passage of the head; and by reason of the reduced neckf the caster has free movement in the socket, but is prevented from dropping out when the article of furniture is lifted, by the head of the spindle being unable to pass by the wire, except some force be exerted.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
In combination, a caster having a spindle formed with a rounded head and reduced neck, a socket therefor formed in two parts, cut away as shown, and a binding-wire adapted to hold the two parts of the socket together and to hold the spindle in place, substantially as described.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM P. TRACY.
