l SFECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,354, dated June 28, 1898.
Application ned Decenas- 8,1896 sam No. 614,963. or@ man.)
To all whom zit may concern:
Be it known that we, MOBTIMER G. MER- RITT and FRANKLIN L. Gnonrg'of Reine, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casters; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to theV accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to casters particularly adapted for iron bedsteads, although equally applicable to use where casters are employed.
In the drawings, Figure l shows the lower end of a leg or post with our caster applied. Fig. 2 shows the same in vertical section. Fig. 3 shows the caster-securing pin or pintle in connection with itsseeuring-spring and a washer. Fig. 4 shows a top View of the pin or pintle and the spring. Fig. 5 shows the same pintle and spring from a face view on the spring with the washer shown in section.
Fig. 6 shows a perspective view of the washer.
- particular description, l indicates the post or leg, which in the construction as shown is provided with a foot or base 2. Into the lower end of the foot or leg is formed a pintle-hole or caster-socket 3, with an enlargement or chamber 4 4at its upper end. The wheel or roller 5 of the caster is carried by arms 6, integral with the tubular body or sleeve 7. The pintle-pin 8 is provided with a head on its lower end and passes through the tubular body' 7, and is adapted to enter the opening 3 in the lower end of the leg. The pin is secured in position in the body or sleeve 7 of the caster by the washer 9 wedging or binding on the pin or otherwise suitably secured. The washer 7 also secures the spring 10 by binding it against the flattened side of the pin S. The washer has a slight recess 8, adapted to receive the angled lower end of the spring 10. The iiattened side of the pin on which the lowerend of the spring rests is at an angle with the body of the pin, and the point Sb, where the flattening runs out, forms ing 3, which is flared slightly'at the lower end, and as the caster is forced into position the spring l0 is forced toward the pin suf fieiently to allow the caster to come into proper position on the leg. When the caster has come to its proper position, the shoulder l0b on the spring l0 catches on the shoulder 4a at the upper end of the opening 3 in the lower end of the leg, and the caster is thereby secured in position, so that it will not drop out when the leg or4 piece of furniture to which it may be attached is raised from the floor. The caster at the same time is free to rotate, preferably on the lower end of the pin S, but if need be the whole pin, with the spring 10, will rotate in the lower end of the leg. The shoulder l0a on the spring being at somewhat of an obtuse angle with the body of the spring, the caster can be removed by forcibly drawing it out, the spring being forced back against the pin. To permit this being done, it will be observed that the upper end of the pin is somewhat cut away, so as not to interfere with the projection l()b in the operation of the spring.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is A 1. The combination with a caster of the pintle 8,' the spring 10 secured tothe side of the pintle and diverging therefrom,the washer 9 secured on the pintle and securing the spring l0 substantially as set forth.;
` 2. The combination with a leg having a In Witness whereof We have afxed our sigcaster-soeket 3 with a shoulder 4: at its upper nature in presence of two Witnesses.

securing the spring to the side of the pintle, D. H. COLEGROVE,
substantially as set forth. E. WV. JONES.
