SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 347,220, dated August 10, 1886.
Application filed May 1'7, 1886.
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it k nown that I, ANDREW BEARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Woodlawn, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows or Cultivators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1. is a side view of my improved plow or cultivator. Fig. '2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom view. Fig. 4 is a perspective detail view of one of the standards and its frame, and Fig. 5 is a similar view of one of the clamps.

My invention has relation to plows or cultivators; and'it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of a plow or cultivator, in which the standards are secured to U shaped frames sliding laterally and adj ustably in fastenings under the plow-beam, and have means for adjusting their pitch, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the beam, which is of the usual construction, and provided with the usual handles, B B, and this beam may be supported in a wheeled frame, orinay have the team directly hitched to it. The standards 0 O consist of adoubled curved bar having its upper ends pivoted upon a bolt, D, passing througha suitable perforation in a U-shaped bar or frame, E, the ends of the doubled bar straddling the U shaped bar near the forward end of its central straight portion. The rear portion of the said central portion of the frame or bar is formed with a series of perforations, F,in which fits a bolt, G, against which the rear edges of the curved portions of. the upper forwardlybent ends of the standard bear, and it will be seen that by shifting the said bolt in the per forations the standard may be set at. different angles to the central portion of the U-shaped bar. beam, and have their lower portions confined by means of perforated plates or shackles I, bearing against the under side of the beam, and plates J J, having upwardly-bent flanges K K at their edges, are secured with perforations L near their ends upon the lower ends of the arms of the clips'by means of nuts M, fitting upon the said arms. Thescfianged plates bear against the lower edges of the laterally-projecting arms of the U-shaped bars, clamping them against the perforated plates or shackles, and the arms of one U-shaped frame are secured by the forward flanged plate and by the forward portion of the rear flanged plate, while the arms of the rear U shaped frame or bar are confined by the rear portion of the rear flanged plate and by the hooked lower end, N, of a bolt, 0, having a perforated plate or washer,
' 1, bearing against the under side of the rear end of the beam, and passing through the beam and having a nut, Q, at its upper end. The arms of the two U-shaped bars point in oppo site directions; and it will be seen that by loosening the clamping-nuts the arms may be adjusted laterally, bringing the standards at any desired distance from each other, where they may be secured by means of the nuts being tightened.
If desired, the arms of the U-shaped bars. may be secured in the flanged plates alone, bringing the standards nearly in a transverse line with each other, as may be desirable, if the standards are provided with plows or shovels, which throw the soil together in a raised ridge, or when it for other reasons may be desirable to have the standards nearlyin atransverse line with each other. It will thus be seen that the distance between the standards may be changed, their relative position may be changed, and the pitch of the standards may be adjusted, rendering the plow or cultivator adaptable to a number of uses to which a plow or cultivator with rigid standards could not be used. The adjusting bolts not passing through the standards provides for readily raising the lower ends of the latter when it is desired to clean them, also for turning said ends up, as seen in dotted lines, Fig. 1, when going to or from the lot, both of which acts would be rendered tedious and impracticable XCO if said bolts passed through the standards and had to be removed and replaced at each lifting up of said standards.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a plow or cultivator, the combination ofabcam of the usual construction, a U shaped frame having its arms projectinglaterally, and clips or bails having nuts upon their lower ends straddling the beam, and having perforated shackles upon the arms bearing against the under side of the beam, and having plates formed with upwardly-bent flanges at their edges, sliding with perforations upon the ends of the bails, and being clamped against the lower edges of the arms of the U shaped frames or bars by the nuts, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. In a plow or cultivator, the combination of a beam of the usual construction, U shaped flat bars having a series of perforations near the rear ends ofthe central portions, a boltin one perforation of each series,standards formed by doubled flat curved bars pivoted with the upper forwardly-curved ends at the forward ends of the central portions of the bars, and bearing with their rear edges against said bolts, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
