Description

- E. G. MAGKINNEY.
Rein-Holder.
Patented Mar. 18, 1862.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OF PEEKSKILL, N EVV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JAMES H. POWELL.
IMPROVED DEVICE FOR HOLDING HARNESS-REINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 34,720, dated March 18, 1862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE C. MACKINNEY, of Peekskill, in the county of WVestch ester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Implement or Device for Holding Harness-Reins when a Person Alights from a Vehicle; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a face view of my invention; Fig. 2,a section of the same, taken in the line a" as, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
The objectof this invention is to obtain a simple and efficient device which may be attached to the dash-board or other convenient part of a vehicle to hold the reins when the occupant or driver alights.
The invention consists in the employment or use of a clamp operated by a screw connected with a stationary plate, as hereinafter shown and described.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a circular plate, which may be constructed of metalat least, that would be the preferable material. This plate Ais provided at its center with a hole 0,, having a screw-thread cut in it to receive a screw B, which has a circular plate 0, which may be also of metal, attached to its outer end. The plate does not require to be as large in. diameter as A, but it should be of sufficient size to cover the lines or reins (shown in red) when passing down between itand the plateA. The plate 0 should haveathumb-piece D attached to it for the convenience of turning said plate; or the plate 0 may be milled or serrated at its edge for the same purpose.
The plateA may be attached by any proper means to the inner side of the dash-board of the vehicle, (that probable would be themost desirable place,) and the driver previous to alighting places the lines or reins between the plates A and C, the latter being turned outward from the plateA sufficiently to admit of the lines or reins being so placed. The plate 0 is then turned 'so that the screw B may draw the plate 0 forward to clamp or hold the reins.
The screwB may have a quick thread, so as to admit of the plate 0 being adjusted by a quite limited turn or movement, thereby facilitating its adjustment.
This device may be constructed at a quite moderate cost, and it may be made in a neat manner, so as to be ornamental-rather so than otherwise.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent as an improved article of manufacture, is- I A rein-holder formed of the stationary plate A and an adjustable plate 0, actuated through the medium of the screw B, as herein shown and described.
EUGENE C. MACKINNEY.
