Description

R. A. SMITH.
Fence.
No. 34,650. Patented March 11, 1862.
We as, Inww/fi N. PETERS. Phohrhlhogmphlr. Waihing'nn, a. c
UNITE ROBERT A. SMITH, OF NEWBURYPORT, MASSACHUSETTS.
FENCE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 34,650, dated March 11, 1862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Newburyport, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Portable Fence; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 exhibits a top view; Fig. 2, an elevation, and Fig. 8, a transverse section of it, Fig. 4, being a side view of the sections or frames of which such fence is composed.
The nature of my invention consists in a mode of constructing each fence frame or section in order that two or more of them may be arranged and combined as hereinafter specified. Also, in the combination and arrangement of a connecting bar with the two fence sections, when constructed interlocked and arranged substantially as hereinafter explained.
The fence, as shown by the drawings, is composed of three separate sections A, B, C, any number of which may be used as circumstances may require. Each section is made of a series of parallel rails a, a, a (4 which are arranged at proper distances asunder and are connected together by and to a set of two, three or more posts 7), b, b, the upper rail being affixed to one side of each post, while the others or those below it, are fastened to the opposite side of such post, each rail being made to project a short distance beyond each of the outer posts as shown in the drawings. Furthermore, to the outer ends of the two lower rails, I fasten two short bars 0, 0, and parallel to the posts, each bar 0, being arranged so that there. may be a passage or mortise d, between it and the post. The several posts and rails of each section or frame, may be bolted, nailed or otherwise properly fastened together.
In order to compose a fence of such frames or sections, two of them are to be placed end to end and at such an angle to one another as to enable the adjacent projecting ends of their four upper rails to be interlocked, as shown in the drawings, in which case, the two adjacent inner posts of the two frames will cross one another. This having been accomplished, and the frames set up so that the feet of all their posts may rest on the ground, I pass a connecting bar D through the next adjacent mortises of the two frames and so as to fit closely into them in a manner to prevent the frames from further spreading apart, or in other words, to cause them to maintain their relative positions, each frame while resting on the ground serving to uphold and support the other. A third frame may be similarly arranged and applied to either of the two, and still another may be disposed and applied to the third in manner as above described, a fence, in this way being formed by a series of them. It can afterward be easily taken down and transported to, and set up in any other position or place, as circumstances may require.
A fence made as above described, constitutes a very convenient one for a farmer.
who may have occasion to temporarily fence portions of his ground.
I claim 1. My mode of constructing each fence section, in order that two or more of them may be arranged and combined as specified, the said mode consisting in making it with two interlocking projections and with the mortise arranged in each end of it substantially as specified.
2. I also claim the combination and arrangement of the connecting bar, D, with two fence sections, when constructed, interlocked and arranged together substantially in manner as herein before set forth.
ROBERT A. SMITH.
