Description

July 29, 1969 J. STEINER 3,457,683
SHAPED HANDLE FOR STRAIGHT AND ANGULAR TOOL HOLDERS Filed April 27, 1966 Jn yen for Johann Jfe/ber United States Patent O ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a novel shaped handle for straight and angular tool holders and the essence of the invention consists in that a hemispherical or similarly shaped extension is provided in the region of the handle portion of a preferably rotating tool to be welded like a scriber or pencil with the thumb, forefinger and middle finger, on which extension a working pressure can be exerted by the free palm together with the free fingers capable of resting on the extension to avoid symptoms of fatigue.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Straight and angular tool holders are used in various branches of industry for the finishing preferably of surfaces by means of rotating tools such as cutters, drills, grinding and polishing elements. This finishing of the workpieces is effected by free-hand holding and wielding of the tool holders as is usual, for example, for wielding scribers or pencils. In many cases the force to be expended for the finishing of complicated workpieces is very great, so that the fingers become soon fatigued and the work must be interrupted. This means loss of time and an abatement of the touch of the hand.
It has already been attempted to overcome this disadvantage by a triangular construction of the shank. However, the effects aspired to were not achieved by this form of the shank.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION According to the present invention, contrary to all known constructions of the shank, the free portion of the hand wielding the shank type handle can now rest on a convenient supporting surface adapted to the form of the hand and serving to increase the required working pressure and to avoid premature symptoms of fatigue.
The hemispherical or similarly shaped extension may be arranged entirely or partly below the handle so as to project, as seen in the working direction, preferably to the right beyond the handle and may be preferably exchangeable. In order to save Weight, the extension is expediently hollow and, if desired, closed on its underside.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS One embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is a side elevational view of a shaped handle according to the invention for a straight tool holder;
FIG. 2 is a similar view of the shaped handle for an angular tool holder; and
FIG. 3 is a top plan view of the shaped handle of FIG. 2.
3,457,683 Patented July 29, 1969 DESCRIPTION OF SPECIFIC EMBODIMENT With reference now to the drawing, a handle a for a straight tool holder and a handle 111 for an angular tool holder are shown. The hemispherical or similarly shaped extension b is fixedly or exchangeably connected to the handle a or (11, respectively, so as to project laterally beyond the same, as can be seen from the drawing. The extension b is expediently hollow and, if desired, closed on its underside.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential characteristics thereof. The present embodiment is therefore to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description and all changes which come within the meaning and range of equivalency of the claims are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
I claim:
1. A shaped, rotating tool handle for straight and angular rotating tool holders comprising:
(a) a rod-shaped handle portion for grasping with the thumb, forefinger and middle finger of a workman, and
(b) an extension means mounted on said rod-shaped portion and projecting laterally to the side thereof to apply pressure on said tool and to contact the curved palm and free fingers of the workman thereby providing a resting place for the palm and free fingers to avoid symptoms of fatigue.
2. A shaped handle for straight and angular tool holders as claimed in claim 1, wherein the extension is hemispherical.
3. A shaped handle for straight and angular tool holders as claimed in claim 1, wherein the extension has a shape similar to a hemispherical shape.
4. A shaped handle for straight and angular tool holders as claimed in claim 1, wherein the extension which constitutes a device for applying pressure and a supporting device is arranged at least partly below the handle portion of the tool so as to project laterally beyond the handle portion.
5. A shaped handle for straight and angular tool holders as claimed in claim 4, wherein the extension projects to the right beyond the handle portion.
6. A shaped handle for straight and angular tool holders as claimed in claim 4, wherein the extension is fixedly arranged on the handle portion.
7. A shaped handle for straight and angular tool holders as claimed in claim 4, wherein the extension is exchangeably arranged on the handle portion.
8. A shaped handle for straight and angular tool holders as claimed in claim 4, wherein the extension is hollow and closed on its underside.
