Description

G. BELLOMO TWOWAY HINGE May 6, 1969 Filed June 30, 196'? IN VEN TOR. GIOVANBATTISTA BELLOMO ATTORNEYS United States Patent 01 hoe 3,441,976 Patented May 6, 1969 US. Cl. 16-163 3 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A two-way hinge enabling a door to hinge right or left, having right top and bottom door brackets connected -to right top and bottom doorway brackets, by a pair of top and bottom pivotable arms; and also having left top and bottom doorway brackets connected to left top and bottom door brackets by a pair of top and bottom pivot-v able arms; and pairs of top and bottom lock brackets for rigidly securing one or the other of the pairs of top and bottom pivotable armsto one of the pairs of top and bottom lock brackets, to restrict the hinging of the door to one direction.
This invention relates generally to two-way hinges, and particularly to means for permitting the hinging of a door to the left or right of a door opening. Dual hinges have been devised to permit hinging of doors in both directions. Such hinges have been intended to have the door always available to hinge either way. They have been complex. They have been subject to sagging. The door has not been rigidly held, so that it would always close in precise engagement with the wall that define the margin of the door opening.
It has been found that a simple hinge could be devised that can permit a door to hinge to the right or the left; that can be locked to permit the door to hinge in only one direction; that when so locked, the door closes in precise closing engagement with the margin of the doorway, without sagging, without gaps.
These objects and advantages as well as other objec and advantages may be attained by the device shown by way of illustration in the drawings in which: 1
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the hinge assembl attached to a door which has been opened to the left of a door opening;
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of the hinge assembly attached to the same door which has been opened to the right of the same door opening;
FIGURE 3 is a left end view of the hinge assembly attached to a door and a door opening; and
FIGURE 4 is a right end view of the hinge assembly attached to a door and a door opening.
The doorway members The two-way hinge provides a top, left, bifurcated doorway bracket 11 and a bottom left, bifurcated doorway bracket 12. These brackets 11, 12 are attached at the left side of a doorway 13 in a top doorway channel 14 and a bottom doorway channel 15, respectively, which are secured at the top and the bottom of the doorway 13.
At the opposite right vertical edge of the doorway 13, a top right, bifurcated doorway bracket 16 and a bottom, right, bifurcated doorway bracket 17 are provided. These brackets 16, 17 are attached at the right side of a doorway 13 in the top channel 14 and the bottom channel 15 respectively. The top and bottom channels 14, 15 are attached above and below the doorway 13 by screws 10.
The door members The two-way hinge provides a top, left, bifurcated door bracket 18 and a bottom, left bifurcated, door bracket 19. The brackets are attached at the left side of a door 20, in a top door-channel 21 and a bottom door-channel 22. The bottom leg 23 of the top door-channel 21 and the top leg 24 of the bottom door-channel 22 are longer than the top leg 25 and the bottom leg 26; the bottom leg 23 and the top leg 24 lie respectively on top and on bottom of the door 20 and are attached thereto by screws 27.
The two-way hinge provides for the opposite vertical edge of the door 20, a top, right, bifurcated door bracket 28, and a bottom, right, bifurcated door bracket 29. These brackets 28, 29 are attached at the right side of the door in the top door-channel 21 and the bottom door-channel 22 respectively.
The pivot arms The top left door bracket 18 and the top left doorway bracket 11 are connected together by a top door arm 30, pivotably secured at each end to the brackets 18, 11.
The bottom left door bracket 19 and the bottom left doorway bracket 12 are connected together by a bottom door arm 31, pivotably secured at each end to the brackets 19, 12,
These arms 30, 31 are both provided with lock- bolt holes 32, 32. When the holes 32, 32 are in registration with holes in the right doorway lock brackets 33, 33, lock bolts 38, 38 may be applied to prevent hinging in one direction.
The top right door bracket 28 and the top right doorway bracket 16 are connected together by a top doorway 22m 34 pivotably secured at each end to the brackets The bottom right door bracket 29 and the bottom right doorway bracket 17 are connected together by a bottom doorway arm 35, pivotably secured at each end to the brackets 29, 17.
These arms 34, 35 are also provided with lock bolt holes, When the holes are in registration with holes in left doorway lock- brackets 39, 39, lock bolts 40, 40 are applied to prevent hinging in the other direction.
The lock bolts 38, 40 (either set) are-applied when it is determined which direction has been chosen for the door to hinge, i.e. either right or left. The door 20 is then rigidly secured against sagging no matter which hinging direction is chosen.
The foregoing description is merely intended to illustrate an embodiment of the invention. The component parts have been shown and described. They each may have substitutes which may perform a substantially similar function; such substitutes may be known as proper substitutes for the said components and may have actually been known or invented before the present invention.
