PAM PHLET-JACKET SPECIFICATION f ming part of Letters Patent No. 343,475, dated June 8, 1886.

To all whom! it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD S. MORSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Pamphlet-Jackets, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and convenient means for holding together a number of pamphlets, books, or magazines, so that they can stand upright on a shelf without blocks or other supports.

The invention consists of a flexible band of any suitable width or length, to one end of which is attached a narrow strap provided with a hook or fastening device, and to the other end is secured a connection for the fast-' ening device. To the wide band is connected a movable center piece, on which is to be written or printed the titles or subjects of the pamphlets, &c., tied together.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a number of pamphlets or books showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is the band with its strap and fastenings. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 2. Fig. is an enlarged view in section of one end of Fig. 3.

suitable material, upon which is to be written or printed the titles of the pamphlets, &c., contained in the package. The strip or band D may surround the band A; or it may be made with two edges turned over at top and bottom, so as to enable it to be moved upon said band and be kept at the center of the same, however large or small the package may be.

When placed around a package of pamphlets, &c., the strap 13 is secured by means of the hooks O, or by any other suitable fastening device, so as to be readily attached and detached, as required.

This device renders a package ofpamphlets, &c., compact and firm, each package being capable of standing rigidly upon a book-shelf without blocks or other supports.

I am aware that a file-holder has been patented consisting of a metallic plate having elastic bands connecting the ends thereof, said bands to pass round the papers filed; also, that a bill-file having board-covers connected by elastic bands has been described. Such devices will fit closely to the sides of a package only when the package is of the requisite size.
