No. 548,234 US. Cl. 2-141 Int. Cl. A41b 1/12, 3/12, 3/04 1 Claim ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to wearing apparel, and more particularly to a collar for a shirt or the like.
An object of the present invention is to provide a shirt collar which is constructed so that maximum neatness is insured, and wherein the collar has a tubing design or construction as well as an opening in the back thereof to permit air to pass so that the collar will be cool and wherein the wearer will be comfortable, the collar being single ply against the wearers neck.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a collar which includes a means for holding the same in place, and wherein a necktie is adapted to be extended through the tube-like construction from the back under a flap, and wherein the collar construction of the present invention will permit and provide for a more comfortable collar inasmuch as there will be less material around the neck and wherein the collar will be less bulky as compared to shirt collars presently in use.
Still another object is to provide such a collar that is economical to manufacture and efficient in use, and further objects and advantages are to provide improved elements and arrangements thereof in a device of the character described that is economical to produce, durable in form, and conductive to the most economical use of materials and uniformity of members formed therefrom.
These and other objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification and claims, together with the accompanying drawing, wherein like parts are referred to and indicated by like reference characters and wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view illustrating the collar of the present invention in place on a shirt, and with portions of the shirt broken away.
FIGURE 2 is an exploded perspective view of the collar showing the parts separated for clarity of illustration.
FIGURE 3 is a back perspective view of the collar showing the fiap unbuttoned or opened.
FIGURE 4 is a back perspective view of the collar illustrating a portion of a necktie threaded therethrough.
FIGURE 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 55 of FIGURE 4.
FIGURE 6 is an exploded perspective view illustrating a modification, and showing the parts separated for clarity of illustration.
FIGURE 7 is a back perspective view of the modified form of the invention shown in FIGURE 6.
Referring in detail to the drawings, and more particularly to FIGURES 1 through 5 of the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates the collar of the present invention which is adapted to be afiixed to a shirt such as the shirt 11, FIGURE 1. As shown in the drawings the collar 10 includes a first portion 12 which is adapted to have a button or fasteners 13 thereon intermediate the ends thereof, FIGURE 2.
There is further provided a second portion which is indicated generally by the numeral 14, and the second portion 14 is adapted to consist of a pair of spaced apart generally rectangular sections 15. As shown in FIGURE 3 the upper edge portion of the shirt 11 is adapted to be interposed or positioned between edge portions of the parts 12 and 14 and these portions are adapted to be secured together as for example by means of stitching 16. This construction provides or defines a tube-like hollow construction as indicated by the numeral 17. Edge portions of the sections 15 are adapted to be secured as by stitching 27 to adjacent edge portions of the part 12. With this tube-like hollow construction 17, a necktie such as the necktie 18 is adapted to be extended or threaded therethrough as shown in FIGURE 4, and as later described in this application.
The numeral 19 indicates a flap of generally rectangular configuration which is interposed between the pair of sections 15, and the flap 19 is adapted to be suitably secured to the intermediate edge surface of the first portion 12 as for example by means of stitches 20, but it is to be understood that the flap 19 may be integrally joined to the portion 12 if desired or required. The flap 19 is provided with a slot 21 which defines or provides a buttonhole for receiving and engaging a button 13 on the portion 12 so that the flap 19 can be readily moved to and from a position such as that shown in FIGURES 1 and 4. The numeral 22 indicates one of the usual or conventional buttons on the shirt 11.
There is further provided a tab 23 which is adapted to have an end thereof suitably afiixed to the portion 12 as at 24, and the tab 23 is provided with a slot or buttonhole 25 for receiving a fastener or button 26 on the opposite end of the portion .12, FIGURE 2.
Attention is now directed to FIGURES 6 and 7 of the drawings wherein there is illustrated a modified or alternative type of shirt collar which is indicated generally by the numeral 38, and the collar 38 is adapted to be used in the same manner as the previously described collar 10. The collar 38 includes a first portion 28 as well as a second portion 29, and the portion 29 is adapted to consist of a pair of generally rectangular sections 30 that are spaced apart from each other as shown in the drawings. It is to be noted that in FIGURES 6 and 7 that the parts 28 and 30 are adapted to be made of an integral construction instead of stitching or sewing the parts together as is the case with the previously described collar '10 wherein the stitches 27 were used and described for fastening these parts together. In FIGURE 6 the numeral 40 indicates a fold line or crease line at the junction of the parts 28 and 30.
Also in FIGURES 6 and 7 there is provided a flap 31 which is adapted to be secured as at 41 to the portion 28, and the flap 31 has a slot 32 which defines a buttonhole for receiving or engaging the button or fastener 33 on the portion 28.
The collar 38 further includes a tab 34 that is secured or afiixed as at 35 to the portion 28, and the tab 34 has a slot 36 for receiving a button or fastener element 37 on the opposite end of the portion 28. This previously described construction provides or defines a tube-like hollow member as indicated by the numeral 39 for receiving a necktie such as the necktie 18.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that there has been provided a collar, and in use with the parts arranged as shown in the drawings and in particular as shown in FIGURES 1 through 5 of the drawings, it will be seen that a collar such as the collar 10 is adapted to be suitably aflixed to the upper portion of a shirt 11 as for example by means of stitching 16, and with the parts arranged as shown in the drawings, a tube-like member is provided which has a hollow interior as at 17 for the reception of a conventional necktie such as the necktie 18. When the collar is being used, the flap 19 is adapted to have its slot or hole 21 arranged in engagement with the button or fastener 13, and similarly the tab 23 is adapted to have its slot 25 arranged in engagement with the button or fastener 26 so that the parts will be in a position such as that shown in FIGURE 1.
The collar 38 shown in FIGURES 6 and 7 is adapted to be used in the same manner as described in connection with the collar '10 and the collar 38 has generally the same construction as the collar 10. However, the collar 38 includes an integral construction between the parts 30 and 28 instead of making the parts .15 separate from the part 12 and then stitching or sewing the parts to the part 12 as at 27. The collar 38 is adapted to be stitched to the shirt 11 as at 16, and the collar 38 defines or provides a hollow tube-like member which has the interior space 39 for the reception of a tie such as the tie 18. The tab 34 functions in the same manner and for the same purpose as the previously described tab 23. Similarly the flap 31 has the same purpose as the previously described flap 19.
In the drawings the numeral 12 or 28 indicates the part of the tube or collar that touches the neck, while the outside part of the collar in FIGURE 1 is indicated by the numeral 14, and in FIGURE 6 the outside part is indicated by the numeral 29. The collar includes a flap such as the flap 19, and the flap 19 is adapted to be attached or held in place by means of the button 13 on the portion 12. The tab 23 is used to attach or hold the collar in place, and the tab 23 engages the button 26. Thus, with the collar of the present invention, two ply material for the tube can be used instead of the present four ply which occurs when the collar is turned over the tie. Also the tie will now go through the tube from the back under the flap such as the flap .19 or the flap 31. The tab 23 will fasten one side of the collar to the other buttoning in place with elastic string or shirt-looped material onto the button 26 which will be just inside the tube, and it will not show and the tie knot will not rest on the button. This construction provides a more comfortable collar inasmuch as less material is used around the neck and it will also simulate the collar as presently being used. The tube will attach to the shirt in the same manner as collars presently are attached in place, with the inside two ply material connecting the shirt body and collar as shown in the drawings. This construction will enable the tube or collar to be in the same position that the present collar assumes but with less bulk.
Some of the important aspects or features of the present invention are as follows. The collar is single ply against the wearers neck, the tubing design allows for air to pass through the collar, and the opening in the back of the collar in the vicinity of the flap such as the flap .19 or the flap 31 permits air to pass therethrough. Also the collar closing arrangement insures maximum neatness. The collar of the present invention not only helps insure proper placement of the tie as well as the holding of the collar neatly in place, but in addition permits and allows the wearer to be comfortable and it is a cooler softer collar that is neat to look at and the like.
While the drawings illustrate the collar being made in a particular way, it is to be noted that in actual manufacture thereof, the collar can be made in any number of ways arriving at the same end result, and for example one piece of material can be used or the parts can be made with stitching showing on top of the collar, or the collar can be made from two or three or more pieces of material.
Thus, the present invention is comfortable for the wearer without requiring any major changes or alterations to the appearance of the shirt. Furthermore, the tie with the present invention will be in the proper place being held in check by both the button at the back and due to the fact that it will be coming through the front openings which will cause the tie to stay in its proper location or place. The collar of the present invention possesses increased comfort and is cooler than present or existing types of collars. In addition with the present invention there will be less of a tendency for the tie to shift or slide out of its proper location.
It will now be clear that there is provided a device which accomplishes the objectives heretofore set forth. While the invention has been disclosed in its preferred form, it is to be understood that the specific embodiment thereof as described and illustrated herein is not to be considered in a limited sense as there may be other forms or modifications of the invention which should also be construed to come within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination with a shirt having an upper edge adapted to encircle the neck of a wearer, a collar consisting solely of a first portion having upper and lower edges and having a fastener thereon intermediate the ends thereof, a second portion consisting of a pair of spaced apart generally rectangular sections having upper and lower edges, the upper edge portion of the shirt being interposed between edges of the first and second portions, means securing the upper edges of said first and second portions to the upper edge of said shirt whereby there is provided and defined a tube-like hollow construction is adapted to receive a portion of a necktie therethrough, a flap of generally rectangular configuration positioned between the pair of rectangular sections, means securing said flap to the upper edge surface of the first portion, said flap being provided with a slot for receiving the fastener on said first portion, a tab, means afiixing said tab to the first portion, and said tab being provided with a slot for receiving a fastener on the opposite end of the first portion, said flap, said first portion and said second portion forming a continuous tube-like construction from one end of the collar to the other when the flap is secured to the fastener.
