Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES T. HOLLOWAY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRANDING AND STAMPING IRONS.
Specication forming part of Letters -Patent No. 34,301, dated February 4, 1862.
.To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. HoLLoWAY, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Branding or Stamping Irons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 represents my improved brandingiron by a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a section at :l: 0c, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
The nature of this invention consists in an improved device for securing movable dies for branding, stamping, or printing, as hereinafter explained.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and'use my invention,I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
B is a stock formed with a central cavity c and a slot Z9, both extending completely through it from end to end.
D is a false or sliding bottom, which is passed endwise into the cavity until stopped by a flange CZ upon its end.
E E E represent movable letters or dies, which are adapted to'project through the slot b, and formed with flanges e fitting in the cavity c.
F F are Wedges placed in suitable apertures transversely beneath the sliding bottom D.
G is a handle permanently attached to the stock.
When it is desired to remove, insert, or adjust any letters or dies, the Wedges F F are partially withdrawn, allowing the false bottom to recede from the dies. The said dies may then be shifted, as required, or removed or inserted Without removing the false bottom, and by again tightening up the Wedges the dies are firmly fixed in any positions in which they may have been placed.
The instrument may be used for branding by heating it or for marking with ink or for stamping by means of a hammer.
The entire instrument may be made of cast-iron, the faces of the letters and any other surfaces being finished up, as required; or where required for stamping, the letters may be faced with or formed entirelyoi:` steel. The stock may be formed in any suitable way to adapt it to receive the blows of a hammer in stamping. Screws may be substituted for the wedges F, if preferred.
I do not desire tobeunderstood as limiting myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts hereinbefore described, as it will be apparent that the same may be somewhat varied Without departing from the essential principles ofthe invention; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A branding or stamping iron, consisting of a stock B, false bottom D, movable types E, and Wedges F, or screws in lieu thereof, but otherwise constructed and arranged as herein shown and described.
The above specification of myimprovement in branding-irons signed this 14th day of December, 1861.
