ClGAR-LIGHTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,913, dated June 1, 1886.

Application filed March 31,1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN M. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Reading, county of Berks, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cigar-Lighters, of which the following is a specification.

This improvement is more particularly related to the class of cigar-lighters where the stand or bracket is removably attached to the counter of the dealer convenient for the use of the smoker. The object of the improvement is to furnish for the above purpose a simple and inexpensive device that will consume a very small quantity of gas, and which at the will of the-smoker will produce a flame of great intensity that will quickly ignite the end of the cigar.

The majority of cigar-lighters which have come-under my notice are very wasteful of gas, and require that the smoker shall place the cigar in his mouth and draw the flame toward the cigar toignite the same. This act draws the flame partially within the body of the cigar, and if the gas is impure impregnates the cigar with its odor and makes the use of such lighters repugnant to those using good cigars.

My improvement obviates the use of. the lips while lighting the cigar, and an impure gas may be burned without imparting its offensive odors to the cigar.

The drawings herewith forming a part of this specification, and in which similar parts are marked by similar letters of reference, show very fully the nature of my improve- -ment, Figure 1 representing in side elevation one mode of applying the same, in which A represents a stand of an ornamental character, having its base A secured to the counter, the column being connected with the gas-supply in any convenient manner. It has the usual gas-cock, B, and burner O, the latter having a taper tip, 0. A yoke, D, is snugly fitted to the burner O and extends rearward for the reception of an air-chamber, E, which has a small needleaperture, E, near the top or closed end, opposite the burner-tip O and slightly above the same. At the base E it is provided with suitable attachments, F, for connection with a flexible tube, G, said tube having pendent from its lower end an elastic air-vessel, H, provided with air-inlet valves As a protection to the hand of the smoker I secure to the yoke D, at the front of Serial No. 197,263. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the upper portion of the device, showing the guard-perfotion, the tip of the burner, and the air-ejecting perforation in the air-chamber.

The operation of the device is as follows? The gas is ignited at the burner-tip and the height of the flame regulated by the cock B.

Practically the flame if one-fourth of an inch above the tip of the burner is of ample size to fill the requirements. The cigar is then held at the apertureJ within the guard J, while the other hand grasps the air-vessel H,

and, either with a lengthened squeeze or a series of short puffs, drives the air out of the chamber E by perforation E, across the flame K of the gas-jet, and, deflecting the same, it strikes against the butt of the cigar and instantly ignites the same. The airin the chamber, being warmed by radiation from the jet, assists in producing an intense heat, and the result is a very uniform firing of the end of the cigar.

My improved cigar-1i ghter may be attached to the gas-lighters now in use in cigar-stores at a mere nominal cost.

Having shown the construction, use, and advantages of my improvement, I desire to secure by Letters Patent the following claims thereon:

' 1. In a cigar-lighter, the combination of an airchamber and gas-burner tip yoked or combined in close proximity, having an airejecting aperture near the top of said chamher and a flexible pipe-connection with its base, a guard of disked form with an aperture in the small end supported from said yoke, the whole combined with an ornamental stand and with a suitable air-forcing device, substantially as and for-the purpose set forth.

2. In combination with a cigar-lighter hav ing a gasburner, G, yoke D, air-chamber E, air-injecting aperture E, tube G, and air-pro ducing device H,-the concave guard J, provided with apertures J and supported by arm Ifrom the yoke D, as for the purpose substantially as set forth.
