NITED, STATES "ATENT OFFICE},
FREDRICK SPRINGHORN, OF HOBOKEN, NE? JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO HERMANN SPRINGHORN, OF NEW YORK, Y.
COVER FOR FRUIT-BASKETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,851, dated June 1, 1886.
Application filed October 23, 1885. Serial No. 180,710. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDRIoK SPRINGHORN, of Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Covers for Fruit-Baskets, of which the followingisaspecification.
This invention relates to an improved cover for fruit-baskets, and more especially peach 1o baskets, which is adapted to be used with any size of basket and readily attached to or removed therefrom; and the invention consists of a cover formed of a cross-shaped main frame having bent ends, transverse slats, and ring- .I 5 shaped wires connecting the ends of the main frame and slats. Two adjoining ends of the cross-frame are recessed and made of greater depth than the remaining ends, which are made flat, so that the cover fits the rims of baskets of different sizes.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 rep resents a side elevation of a fruit-basket with my improved cover in position thereon. 2 is a bottom view of the cover detached; Fig.
3, a vertical transverse section on line .r w, Fig. 2; and Figs. 4 and 5 are details showing the devices for fastening the cover to the basket.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the wooden cross-frame of my improved cover for f ruit-baskets. The pieces which form the frame A intersect each other at right angles, and are provided with bent ends, of which two adj oin- 3 5 ing ends, a a, are made of greater depth than the remaining two ends, a a; The ends a a are provided with transverse recesses a a by which the frame is retained on the rim of the basket, while the ends a a are made straight 0 and adapted to rest on the top of the rim, as
shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 3. The ends of the cross-frame A are connected by stout ringshaped wires B B which are attached by staples to the ends a a. Gross-slats O O are arranged parallel to one of the pieces forming the cross-frame A, and are attached by staples to the upper wire B, and by nails or otherwise to the cross-frame A. The cover is at Fig.
tached by fastening --hooks D to the rim of the basket, which hooks are made of band-iron 0 or other suitable material, and are applied by an eye to one of the ring-shaped wires B, and by their hook-shaped ends to the rim of the basket, so as to be firmly retained thereon, as shown in Figs. 4. and 5.
My cover has the following advantages:
It fits baskets having rims of slightly differing diameters, as the straight ends rest on the top of the rim when the recessed ends are applied to two points of the same.
The construction of the cover is simple and prevents the bruising of the fruit, no part of which is required to be removed in putting o the cover.
The open sides of the cover facilitate ventilation and keep the fruit in good condition.
The cover can be readily attached and locked by means of the fastening device, and can be used imliscriminately with baskets having rims of varying diameters.
The cover is firmly held on the basket, so that the baskets can be piled one on top of the other.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A cover for fruit-baskets, consisting of a cross-frame having bent ends adapted to fit the rim of the basket, ring-shaped fasteningwires, transverse slats attached to the crossframe and the upper fastening-wirc,and fastening devices for attaching the cover to the rim of the basket, substantially as set forth.
2. A cover for fruit-baskets, consisting of a cross-frame having bent ends, of which two adjoining ends are recessed and the other ends straight, ring-shaped connecting wires attached to the ends of the cross-frame, transverse slats attached to the cross-frame and upper fastenin g-wire, and fasteni ngdevices for applying the the cover to the rimof the basket, substantially as set forth.
3. A cover for fruit-baskets, consisting of a cross-frame having beiit ends, two adjoining ends of which are of greater depth than the other ends, and provided with transverse recesses, ring-shaped wires attached to the ends my invention I have signed my name in presof the frame transverse slats attached to the ence of two subscribing witnesses. cross-frame and the upper ring-wire, and fast- 1 T T ening devices by which the cover is applied FREDRICK SPRIL O 5 to the rim of the basket, substantially as set \Vitnesses:
forth. CARL KARP,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as SIDNEY lVIANN.
