Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY T. ROMERTZE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
AUTOMATIC CAR-COUPLING.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY T. RoMER'rzE, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new Improved Automatic Car- Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists that Figure 1 is a box a, wherein are two jaws b, b the rear end of which, m, m, move in the sockets c, c, a lever d, rotating obliquely on a pin 6 between the said jaws, a bar f, a wire spring g, and two projections h, 72 secured on each side.
The mode of operating the said automatic car-coupling is effected by pulling in Fig. 2 the lever rl toward the rear end of the box 29. The two jaws b, b, are thereby forced to the side of the box 9, g, at which time the projections h, h, by entering in Figs. 3 and 4 the jaw slots 2' i expel the parallel barhead ends Z, Z, from the said slots, and thus assist the bar f to issue freely from the box, respective car buffer; again by pushing in Fig. 1 the lever (Z to the front end of the box 9, the two jaws Z), Z), will close together, its end appearing b, b, in Fig. 5, when by pushing the barhead end is, between the said jaws they will j ustso much open as to admit the whole barhead, of which the parallel ends Z, Z, enter the jaw slots 71, 2', which at once 34,284, dated January 28, 1862.
resumes its closed form, the lower jaw being held in that position by the spring 9, and the upper jaw by the lever cl, by all of which the bar 7', is held firmly between the said jaws, which last are doubly securely held in their position, first, because the rear ends of the jaws m, m, by being inserted in the sockets c, c, resist the pulling force of the bar, end, secondly, because the front jaws ends a, n, reach close to the inside box front 0, the latter assists the jaws to maintain their position.
1 construct the coupling bar of the form as represented in the drawings, and arrange that the entire length of the same must be a fraction shorter, yet twice the distance of that part of the car buffer beginning from the right side of the lever s as showing in Fig. 6, to the outside carbuffer front If, in consequence of which the bending or breaking of the said bar while in the process of coupling is rendered impossible.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The jaws Z), Z), the sockets 0, c, the slots 2', in combination with the releasing lever (Z, spring 9, case or box a, with the projections h, it, substantially as shown and described.
HENRY T. ROMERTZE.
