DUST SHIELD FOR GAR AXLE BOXES. No. 342,742. Patented May 25, 1886.
Witu/eflgefl. -Q 'Iuventor. UqwyiWW? UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL A. FLOWER AND PHILIP ROSS, OF JERSEY CITY, NEIV JERSEY.
DUST-SHIELD FOR CAR-AXLE BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent. N0. 342,742, dated May 25, 1886.
Application filed October 29, 1885. Serial No. 181,325. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that we, SAMUEL A. FLOWER and PHILIP Ross, citizens of the United States, and residing at Jersey City, Hudson county, and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dust-Shields for Oar-Axle Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing; and it consists of an elastic sheet of rubber or other suitable flexible material having a flocky or flossy surface, applied to the car-axle box inside of the cover in such manner-as to effectually close the same against the circulation of air through the box and to materially prevent the entrance of dust-laden air, and especially to collect and retain in the flocky or flossy surface any dust that may enter, to be removed from time to time by taking out the dust-shield and rapping out the dust, all as hereinafter fully described, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, which represents a sectional elevation'of a car-axle box with our improved dust-shield.
We cut a small sheet, a, of flexible substance-as rubber, card-board, leatheroid, or any approved flexible substance-in suitable size and form to spring into the front opening of the axle-box b, and hear at the edge all round against the walls of the box and prevent the air from drawing in through the joints of the cover 0, which is a common effect of the suction that is frequently caused th rough the dust-packing at d by the fierce gusts playing under the cars while in motion, the said packing at (1 often wearing slack and failing to stop the air; and on the front side of said shield we apply in any approved way a sheet of canton-flannel or any approved substance,
f, having a flocky or flossy surface adapted to catch and retain the dust. We also make this flocky fabric a little greater in breadth at the lower edge than the body of the shield, to form I a roll, 6, at the base of the shield for greater capacity to receive and hold the dust in the angle where the greater quantity naturally lodges and for the more effectual removal of the dust with the shield. This flocky sheet may be made of any other approved material, and may be used with or without the roll-flap at the lower edge of the other part; but we prefer to use it.
The boxes, generally, have ledges f, a little back of the inside of the cover, against which the shield may lodge for being kept in place; but in case such supports are lacking any suitable appliances may be employed in lieu thereof for the purpose.
We do not claim, broadly, a plate or dustguard applied within the box independently of the lid, to prevent access of dust to the journal through the lid-opening.
W'hat we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A flexible dust-shield having a flocky or flossy surface'adapted to receive and retain the dust, applied, as described, within the car-axle box, to prevent the circulation of air and to exclude the dust from the axle, as herein set forth.
2. A flexible dust-shield having a flocky or flossy surface and a roll-flap of like character at the base, adapted to receive and retain the dust, applied to a car-axle box, to prevent the circulation of air and exclude the dust from the axle, as herein set forth.
In witness whereof we have hereunto signed our names in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL A. FLOWER. PHILIP ROSS. Witnesses:
W. J. MORGAN, S. H. ll/IORGAN.
