Description

(No Model.) I
N.;H. DAVIS. DUST-GUARD .FOR'GAR AXLE BOXES.
No. 519,152. Patentd May 1. 1 894.
UVVENTOH 1 BY 7 l A TTOHNE Y.
I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
NATHAN H. DAVIS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DUST-G UARD FOR DAR-AXLE BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,152, dated May 1,1894.
Application filed May 12 1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LNATHA H. DAv1s,a' citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dust-Guards for Car- Axle Boxes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accomaway, including a section of the box on line Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in theitwo figures.
Referring to the drawings: A designates a portion of a car axle box of Well known construction. In the rear of the box is a vertical chamber B, the walls of which have enlarged openings 0 for the passage of the axle or journal, as also well known, said chamber flange E around its edge.
being open at top. In said chamber, is a ,dustguard consisting of a plate D of metal or other suitable material, with a central opening slightly larger than the axle or journal, which passes freely through it, and a Around the central opening of the plate isaflange F, whose inner face is lined with a ring F of steel, Babbitt or other metal, with which the axle or journal is directly in contact, said ring being properly secured, to said flange F. To the side of the plate, contiguous to the wall of the box, is secured afacing Gof canvas or other fabric, which is held in contact with said wall by the action of a spring H, which consists of the curved or bent legs J, and the cross piece K, which joins the same, said legs bearing respectively against the plate D, and the opposite wall of the chamber B, and thus pressing the plate firmly against the other Wall of the chamber, without however pre- I venting the usual rising and falling motions of the box, it being seen that dust, dirt, &c., are prevented from passing between the rear Serial No. 432,705. (No model.)
between the lining F and axle or journal, while leakage of oil from the box is also prevented. As the axle or journal is in contact with the ring F, it runs with but slight friction on thedust guard, and as said liningis of durable nature, it does not wear out rapidly, and thus remains serviceable for a long time, said lining furthermore thickening or increasing the wearing surface of the guard plate with which the axle is in contact, and upon which it rotates, it being evident that the flange and ring may be formed of one piece of material. a
The flange E of the plate D prevents disis considerably thinner than the space formed by the chamber in the longitudinal direction of the axle, and said chamber is open at top, the spring may be drawn out from under the flange E, and then raised through the open top of the chamber, whereby it may be entirely displaced when so required. I
It is evident that the spring maybe restored to position through the open top of the chamber and engage under the flange, whereby it is again operative to hold the plate properly against the relative wall of the chamber B. It is also evident that the flange E of the plate D, serves to stiffen said plate around the edges thereof, and that as said plate is thin and therefore flexible, it will adapt itself under pressure of the spring to any curved or irregular surface of the box.
will not burn-out as is the case where plates of the class are constructed of wood, as heretofore practiced.
D, the flanged edges of the latterare formed bybending the said edges so as to form channels D, the ends of said facing are extended into said channels and clamped by the same, thus firmly connecting said ends with the plate.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A car axle box having a chamber, a plate in said chamber with a central opening and a flanged rim, said opening having a flanged wall of thechamber. and the facing G, and
