PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD DENEGRE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO MoCORD & COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION .OF NEW JERSEY.
CAR-AXLE BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,152, dated June '7, 1904.
Application filed u y 12, 1902. Serial No. 115,278. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD DENEGRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Car-Axle Boxes, (Case No. 4,) of which the following isa full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to car-axle boxes, and
is generally applicable to all forms of car-axle boxes.
My invention has for its object the provision of means whereby the cotton-waste or other element for receiving lubricating-oil may be prevented from following the axle in its rotation. To this end I preferably provide in the bottom of the box a partial partition extending longitudinally of the axle and preferablylocated in the same plane with the axis of the axle. This partition serves to keep the cotton-waste properly distributed, thereby permitting the proper application of lubricating-oil to the axle and its bearings. In order to afford as large a bearing-surface as possible for the partition against the cotton-waste and at the same time permit of the proper disposition of the waste about the axle, the upper edge of the partition is made with a sinuous outline.
I will explaininy invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a car-axle box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the box on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout both figures.
For the purpose of retaining the proper location of the lubricating material, as cottonwaste, the body of the car-axle box a may be provided with a longitudinal partition 6, preferably located in the same plane with the axis of the axle c and havingits top provided with a sinuous outline, so that the cotton-Waste may be properly located directly beneath the car-axle, while at the same time affording sufficient engaging surface to prevent displacement of the waste. This feature is adapted to any form of car-axle box in addition to that particular form of car-axle box illustrated.
The box may be'provided with any suitable form of dust-guard, the illustration of a form of dust-guard (Z being shown only by way of example. The front of the car-axle box is provided with a lid 0, which is provided with means whereby it maybe swung and slid with respect to the box for the purpose of opening and closing the same. As this lid, with the cooperating mechanism, forms no part of my present invention, it will not be described herein.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A car-axle box, provided with a narrow vertical partition upon its interior for preventing displacement of the lubricating material within the box, said partition extending longitudinally of the axle and substantially coincident with its vertical axial plane, the top edge of the partition being provided with a sinuous outline, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I hereunto subscribe my name this 26th day of June, A. D. 1902.
EDWVARD DENEGRE.
