1 ATTORNEYS N'ITE'D' STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SEPASTIAN LANDGRAF, OF NEYV YORK, N. Y.
LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,611, dated May 25, 1886.
Application filed March 11, 1886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SEPASTIAN LANDGRAF, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Looks for Boxes, 850., of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in looks, such as are especially adapted for use on boxes, coffins, and the like; and it consists, essentially, in the c0mbination,with a lockplate and catch-plate, ot' a recessed catch on the catch-plate, asliding bolt adapted to engage the catch when in its locking position, guides for the sliding ,holt, a stem provided with a Web which engages the sliding bolt, and a tumbler-spring for locking the bolt in its locking and unlocking positions, all of which is more fully pointed out in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a sectional plan view of my improved lock, showing the sliding bolt in its unlocking position. Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof, representing the sliding bolt in its locking position. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 isa sectional view on a smaller scale than the preceding figures of my look as applied to a coffin. Fig. 5 is a section in the plane 00 00, Fig. 1.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, theletter A designates the catch-plate, and B is the lock-plate, the two portions of which latter form a right angle with each other.
From the catch-plate A projects a catch, 0, which is provided with a recess, 0, and extends through a suitable aperture in the lockplate when the lid or cover is closed, and the recess therein is thus brought into a position to be engaged by a sliding bolt, D, when the latter is thrown into its locking position. This bolt D is constructed with a guideway, d, which engages witha guide-pin, d, that is secured in or formed integral with the lockplate, and it is thrown into its locking and unlocking positions by suitable means. In the example shown in the drawings the bolt is provided with anotch, e, that is engaged by a web, 6, extending from a stem, E, which is pivoted in the lock-plate. The stem is provided with a square or hexagonal head, and is turned to operate the bolt by means of a key, E, Fig. 1, properly constructed for that purpose.
Serial No. 194,873. (No model.)
To look the bolt in its locking and unlocking positions, I make use of a tumbler-spring,
engages a post, f, with its free end, which free end is provided With an upwardly-inclined working-lace, 1, and a second working-face, 2, that forms an angle with workingface 1. \Vhen the bolt is in its locking position, Fig. 2, the face 2 engages the postf and locks itin this position, and when the bolt is in its unlocking position, Fig. 1, the face 1 engages the postf and retains the bolt in this position.
A look constructed according to'rny invention is available for all ordinary purposes, and it can be applied also to the body of a coffin without interfering or obstructing the groove 9, in which is retained one edge of the covering-glass G, whereby the lock is rendered exceedingly valuable for this purpose.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the plate A, having the catch 0, provided with the recess a, with the right-angled lock-plate B, having the stationary pin], the guided bolt D, sliding horizontally under and parallel with the top flange of the lock-plate to engage the recessed catch, and the spring F, attached at one end to and sliding with the bolt, and extending longitudinally from the latter and provided with the two working-faces l and 2, located at an angle to each other, for retaining the bolt in its locking and unlocking positions, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with thelock and catchplates constructed as described, of the catch 0, the recess 0 therein, the sliding bolt D, constructed to engage the recessin the catch, the slot (1 therein, and the pin 01, for guiding the bolt, the notch e in the bolt, the stem E, and web 6 thereof, for operating the bolt, the postf, the tumbler-spring F, having two inclined working-surfaces, 1 and 2, constructed to engage with the post, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
