III/l i UNITED STATES PATENT: OFFICE.
JULIUS FORSTER, OF DEGATUR, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO T. G. MGKENNEY, OF SAME PLAGE.-
PERMUTATiON-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,977, dated November 21, 1882 Application led July G, 1882. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known thatI, J ULIUs FORSTER, acitizen of the United States, residing at Decatur, in the county of De Kalb and State of Georgia, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in combination-locks, and it has for its objects to provide certain means whereby the lock-bolt, after being projected, may be fastened securely by combination devices, which may be shifted to effect such fasteningin such manner that the lock-bolt cannot be thrown back Without returning said devices to their normal positions.
1n the drawings, Figure l represents a View of my improved lock with the front plate removed, showing the interior thereof and the working parts of the lock. Fig. lab is a partial longitudinal vertical section and an end view of the lock-bolt and the rib on which it slides. Fig. 2 represents a transverse vertical sectional view on the line m a' of Fig. l. Fig. 3 repl resents a View of the face of thelock, showing the means employed for setting the bolt-fastening devices. v Fig. Arepresents a detached view of one of the tumblers. Fig. 5 represents a detached view of one of the disks and its connection employed in connection with the fastening devices for securing the lock-holt when projected. Fig. 6 is a top view of the lock-bolt.
The letter A indicates the lock-casing, which is constructed in the usual manner, and B the lock-bolt, which at its forward end sets in an opening at the forward edge of the lock-casing,
`as usual, and at its rear end is slotted and sets over a longitudinal rib, C, on the back of the lock-Casin g. The lock-bolt, about midway between its'ends, and in the neighborhood of the key-hole, has formed a recess, D, in its lower edge, with which the key engages in order to move said bolt. Almost immediatelyr 4in line with said recess, on the upper edge, is
formed a recess, E, which is adapted to be engaged by a lug, F, on the bolt-spring G. This spring is of peculiar construction, being elliptically curved,as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1, the said elliptical portion setting under the key as it is turned, so as to` lift the lng F and permit the bolt to be moved, the lug F being formed on a horizontal extension of the elliptical part of the spring, the 'said extension being formed with an eye, H, setti ng over a stud, I, on thelock-casing,and then bent upward and bearing against a stud, K, as shown in Fig. l.
The letter L indicates two tumblers secured to the springsM, mounted on the studs M', their free ends bearing against the studs N. The said tumblers overset the bolt, as shown in Fig. l, and are provided with detents P, adapted to engage the recesses R R and S `S on the lower edge of the lock-bolt. The said tumblers on their faces are provided with segmental cams T, against which bear the peripheries of the rotating cams U, which are secured to the shafts V, journaled in bearings in the casing, and projecting through the front thereof.
The shaft V of one of said cams is provided witha'n arm, W, which is bent at the extremity, and is adapted to engage the recess E on the upper edge of the lock-bolt. The said arm is held normally in place by a spring, Y.
The letter A indicates two disks mounted on the shafts B,journaled in thecasing and projecting in front as the cam-shafts before mentioned. The said disks are slotted at C on their peripheries, and their shafts are screwthreaded and provided with bent arms D', setting between lugs E in such manner that when the shafts are elevated or depressed the ends of the arms will be thrown into one of the recesses at each side of the central recess of the bolt, as shown in Fig. l, when the bolt is locked to fasten the same, or out of said re! cess to unfasten the bolt and permit it to be moved back. The slots on the peripheries of the disks are adapted to engage the lugs F on the tumblers, to hold the parts when the bolt is fastened.
The letter G indicates the knob-bolt of the lock, and H' its spring 5 and the letter I indicates the latch-bolt, and K the knob and arm by means of which it can be operated.
Theshafts of the bolt-fastening devices before mentioned are provided with cog-disks L and plain disks M2 at'their outer ends, the
IOO
plain disks being provided on their rear faces with lugs N', which are adapted to engage the cog-disks at any convenient point. The cogdisks are squared on the said shafts, while the plain disks are arranged to rotate thereon, so that their positions may be changed With respect to each other. The faces of the plain disks -are marked With the letters of the alph abet, s'o that the position of the interior fastening devices may be known to the person setting them from the outside, and to no others.
It will be evident from the above that when the bolt is projected, by bringing the cams and disks into proper position, the lock may be fastened so that it cannot be turned by the key, and as the position of the cams and disks can be changed indenitely from the outside, and as such position can be regulated by the devices on the outside ot' the lock, it will be perceived that it. will be almost'impossible for any personexcept the one setting the lock to open the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
l. In combination With the -bolt and tumblers, the disks slotted at their peripheries and adapted to engage lugs upon the said tum` blers, and the threaded disk shafts and arms, the latter being adapted to take into the recesses at the lower edge of the bolt, substantially as'and for the purposes specified.
2. The combination, in a lock, of the lockbolt recessed as described, the tumblers, the cams and fastening-disks and their connections, andthe cogged disks and plain disks,
