To all whom it may concern.:

Be it known that I, THADDEUS WV. HINEs, of

Tama City, in the county of Tama and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutlery-Scourcrs; and I do hereby declare the i'ollowingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in cutlery-seourers, the object of the same being to provide .a scouring-board which shall be capable of dii-ferent inclined adjustments in a box, and which shall be adapted to form the i5 coverof the box when not in use; afurther object being to provide a scouring-board of such construction and supported in such a manner that it may be quickly, easily, and securely adj usted for use; a further object being to pro- 2o vide means for collecting the dust and grit resultiug from the scouring,and preventing the same l'rom being scattered on the table or door;

a further object beingto provide a convenient,

durable, and inexpensive scourer well adapt- 2 5 ed to ordinary household purposes.

Vith these ends in view my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view of the scourer in perspective as it appears when out of use, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section with the board iu position for use.

A represents an oblong box. The cover of the box consists of two sections, B and C, hinged together in such a manner that the free ends of the sections will swing downwardly toward the bottom ol' the box, but will not swing upward- 4o ly above the position where they form ahorizontal plane. The section B is the scouringboard, provided with a smooth upper surface, on which pulvcrized scouring-brick or any desired abrasive powder is applied. The edges of B are conveniently provided with upwardlyproj ecting strips b, to prevent the powder from creeping off the sides ofthe board. A knob, b, is attached to one corner of the board B, for convenience in lifting the board into elevated 5o adjustment, as will appear further on. The

section C is pivoted to the sides of the box A at a, and the free end of B rests, when in elevated adjustment, on a cleat or bracket, a', secured to the end of the box asuitable distance below the upper edge. Two studs, D, are secured to the sides of the box A on their inner faces, one on each side, at points near the hinged end of B, which studs form supports for the said hinged end of B when itis in elevated adjustment. A notched bar or series of 50 stops, E e, the., is secured to the bottom of the box A at a point beneath the free end of B, for the purpose of engaging the said end when it is allowed to fall.

The board is operated as follows:'lSuppose 65 the sections B and C to liein ahorizontal plane forming the cover ofthe box A, asreprescnted in Fig. l. By pressing downwardly ou the free end of the section G the free end of section B is drawn off the rest a and falls into one ofthe 7o notchesE e, &c., and is thereby held in a tilted position for use. The amount of inclination is determined by the different notches E e, uc., in which the end of B is held. Then in this po` sition, the dust and dirt resulting from the scouring will slide downwardly in the box A,

and when the board is out of use the sections B and C are returned to their horizontal positions,forming the cover, by taking hold of the knobb and adjusting the endof B on the resta. 8o

It is evident that slight changes may be made in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the details 8 5 of construction herein set forth; but,

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a cutlery scourer, the combination, 9o with abox, of a sectional cover pivoted thereto,

' one section of the cover forming a scouringboard, substantially as set ibi-th.

2. In a cutlery-scourer, the combination, with a box having a cover-section pivotally secured thereto, of ascouring-board hinged to said cover-section, substantially as set forth.

8. In a cutlery -scourer, the combination, with a box,a tilting cover-section secured thereto, and a support secured to the end of 10o the boX, of a scouring-board hinged to the tilting section and resting on the support when in elevated ad j nstment, and together with said tilting section forming a cover, substantially as set forth.

4. In a, cutlery -scourer, the combination, with a boX provided With a tilting scouring- `board section forming aJ portion of the cover when not in use, of a stop or stops secu red to the bottom of the box for engaging and locking the scouring-boardin a tilted adjustment, substantially as set forth.

5. In ai cutlery sconrer, lthe combination,

with a box provided with a scouring-board hinged to a tilting cover-seotion, of a support 15 for the free end of the board and supports for the hinged end of the board when the same is in elevated adjustment, substantially as set forth.
