SCRUBBING-MACHINE.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 21,868, dated October 26, 18-58.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. BARNETT, of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Machine for Scrubbing Floors, Pavements, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a side view of my invention. Fig. 2, a verticalsection of ditto taken in the line 00, 00, Fig. 3. Fig. 3, a plan or top view of ditto.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

This invention consists in having a trilateral frame provided with a vertical arbor to which a brush is attached the frame being also provided with adjustable bars to which small brushes and wipers or mops are secured the frame being mounted on casters, provided with soap and water reservoirs and the whole arranged as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby the operation of scrubbing is greatly facilitated, its labor much reduced, and the work performed in a perfect manner.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.

A represents a trilateral frame whichmay be constructed of either wood or metal and B is a vertical arbor or shaft which is placed centrally within the frame, the upper end of the arbor being provided with a handle a, and the lower end below the frame provided with a brush 0 which may be constructed similarly to the ordinary hand brushes. On the upper end of the arbor B, a shoulder a, is formed and b, is a stop or button attached to the upper part of the frame.

The arbor or shaft B is allowed to slide freely a certain distance up and down in the frame A and the button or stop I), is so arranged that it may when necessary, be turned under the shoulder a, of the arbor g, to keep the brush 0, elevated from the oor.

The frame A, is mounted on casters 0, and to two sides of the frame boxes or receptacles cl, 6, are attached, one to each. The box or receptacle (1, is provided with a faucet f, and the box 6, has a perforated bottom g, over which a slide h, works. To the same two sides to which the boxes (Z, c, are attached, levers D, E, are attached by fulcrum pins 2 These levers extend a trifle above the top of the frame A and have handles j, attached. To the same sides of the frame A above the levers D, E, are attached but at the opposite ends bars F, are pivoted and to the lever ends of the bars F, and their respective levers D, E, horizontal bars G are pivoted, as shown clearly in Fig. l. The bars G are at the lower part of the frame A, and to each bar G two clamps 7c, 7:, are attached. These clamps may be constructed in any proper manner. Those shown in the drawings are simply two arms pivoted together and having a spiral spring Z, between them. Between the clamps 70, at one side of the machine brushes m, are secured and be tween the clamps of the other side cloths or sponges a, are secured.

The operation is as follows-Water is placed in the reservoir (Z, and soft soap in the box 6. The operator rolls the device to the desired spot. The faucet f, of box (Z, is then opened and the slide h of box 6, is drawn out a requisite distance. Water and soap are thereby allowed to fall on the floor, and the operator turns the handle a, with a reciprocating partially rotating movement and the brush C will be operated scrubbing the floor the device being shoved along by the operator as the work progresses. When it is necessary to wipe the floor, the operator raises the shaft or arbor B, and turns the button I), underneath the shoulder a. The latter retains the brush C above the floor and the lever E is then worked back and forth. The sponges or cloths a, absorb the moisture of the floor and render it dry. The small brushes m, are operated by actuating the lever D, and these brushes are used scrubbing in the angles adjoining the base board of the room so that the floor may be cleaned close up to the sides or walls of the room. When the brushes m, and sponges a, are not in use they are elevated above the floor by inclining the levers so as to throw up the bars G. i

The boxes d, e, may be placed at the inner side of the frame A, and the handle a, may be about 3% or 4: ft. from the floor. The frame is made of the trilateral form, in order that it may work snugly into the corners of the room.

The invention is simple and may be constructed at a small cost.
