Description

R. J. SLAVSKY Jan. 7, 1969 PRICE TAGSv Filed Dec. l5, 1966 FIG- l0 FIGB FIGS
INVENTOR ROBERT J SLAVSKY ATTORNEYS United Patent o 3,419,977 PRI'CE TAGS Robert J. Slavsky, Lathrup Village, Mich., assigner to Shaw & Slavsky, Inc., Detroit, Mich. Filed Dec. 15, 1966, Ser. No. 602,086 U.S. Cl. 40--5 Int. Cl. G09f 3/20 1 Claim ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A price tag, such as is used for indicating the prices of products displayed in .supermarket shelves and cabinets and particularly a price tag which is mountable in a variety of mounting manners, and which is equipped for exibility of mounting of digits and name strips to indicate the products and their prices. Such price tag comprises a basic panel whose front face has four corner pockets in its upper part for receiving a name strip; twelve pockets, in three vertical, four horizontal rows for receiving large and small digts; and a mounting clip on its rear face.
Brief summary las well as prices over one dollar ($1.00), and in effect gives any desired combination of location of mounting,
of use, of product identication, of colors, of prices, etc.
An embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the appended drawing.
Brief description of drawing In this drawing:
FIG. 1 is a front view of one form of basic price tag.
FIG. 2 is a right end vew of FIG. 1.
FIG. 2A is a transverse sectional view as if on line 2A-2A of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 illustrates a modification wherein the tag is provided with a double pin triple riveted to it for mounting the tag.
FIG. 4 is a right end view of FIG. 3.
FIG. 5 is a front view of a product name strip having the name BEEF on the front and back (shown dotted).
FIG. 6 shows an LB strip.
FIG. 7 shows representative large size digits.
FIG. 8 shows representative small size digits.
FIG. 9 illustrates one choice of mounting of the tag in a molding.
FIG. 10 illustrates a different choice of mounting of the same tag in the same molding.
Detailed description FIG. l of the drawing shows a basic price tag which is useful for removably and interchangeably mounting a variety of product name strips, and alvariety of large digits, smaller digits and LB strips, such as the variety of strips and digits shown in FIGS. 5, 6, 7 and 8. The tag comprises a plastic panel having in the upper part of its front face four facing pockets 21 open at their facing edges for receiving the corners of a product name strip such as the strip 22 of FIG. 5.
The basic price tag 20 has in the lower part of its front Patented Jan. 7, 1969 "Ice face three vertical rows 24 of pockets. Each row has four pockets 2647-28-29. Thus, there are twelve pockets 24-26-27-28-29.
Pockets 26-27 open at lower edges. Pockets 28-29 open at upper edges.
For mounting the tag there may be provided a triple riveted double mounting pin 40 as is shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 made in accordance with my prior Patent No. 2,142,085 of Jan. 3, 1939.
Another and preferred form of mounting means comprises a V-shaped flanged member 44 located on the upper part of the rear face of the panel and riveted to it by rivets 45, which are concealed when a strip 22 of FIG. 5 is disposed on the front face of the tag within the pockets 21.
In addition to the basic price tag 20, the name strips 22, and the mounting means 40 or 45, there is provided a supply of large digits 50 such as is shown representatively in FIG. 7, a supply of small digits 51 shown representatively in FIG. 8, and a supply of LB strips 52 as shown in FIG. 6.
All of the digits and strips of FIGS. 6, 7 and 8 are provided with pocket tabs 54 at their upper and lower ends for fitting into pockets 24.
Strip 22, in its preferred form, hasvthe same product name on front and back, for example, printed in white on black on one side, and white on red on the other, for flexibility of choice of product identication.
Uses and advantages Now having described the basic price tag and its components we here enter upon the description of the variety of uses and advantages of the price tag and its components.
By proper selection of digits, the tag may be used to price items under one dollar. For example, by using large digits 50 of FIG. 7 with the LB strip 52 of FIG. 6 in the three rows 24 of pockets in the tag 20, a price of 48e per lb. may be posted. The same price may be indicated as by using small digits of FIG. 8 and the LB strip of FIG. 6.
However, if a price above one dollar is to be indicated, it can be done by using one large digit 50 of FIG. 7 in the left hand row of pockets 24, and two smaller digits 51 of FIG. 8 in the second and third rows 24 of pockets, using pockets 26 and 28, or 27 and 29. Thus, a price of $1.48 may be posted.
When the tag is used with the strip 22 above the digit (FIG. 10), pockets 26 and 28 are used for the smaller digits; but when the tag is inverted with strip 22 below the digits (FIG. 9), pockets 29 and 27 are used for the smaller digits.
Mounting-The tag may be mounted with strip 22 above the digits, FIGS. 3 and 4, by use of the mounting pin 40.
It also may be mounted in a molding 60 in either one of two arrangements. For example, as shown in FIG. 10 it may be mounted with the name strip 22 in pockets 21 at the upper part of the price tag and with the upper part of the tag projecting above the molding 60 and the lower edge of the tag flush with the lower edge of the molding. If this is not desirable for any reason, the price tag may be mounted in the manner shown in FIG. 9, in which case the digits will be above the strips 22.
In either case since the digits may be mounted reversibly in the rows 24 of the pockets 26, 27, 28 and 29, and the name strips may be mounted reversibly in the corner pockets 21, whether the tag be mounted as in FIG. 10
or as in FIG. 9, the digits may nevertheless be above the name strip or below the name strip, and the digits may nevertheless be right side up in all cases and the legends on the name strips 22 likewise be right side up in all cases; this is true whether the price indicated be above or below one dollar.
The name strips of FIGS. 5 and 6 may be of a variety of printings and a variety of colors, thus providing a large variety of product identications, but in each case, regardless of the strip chosen, and regardless of which side of a strip is being used, and regardless of whether the tag be mounted with its lower edge flush with the molding as in FIG. 10 or its upper edge flush with the molding as in FIG. 9, the legends on the name strips will, in all cases, be right side up, despite the great exibility of choice; and this also is true whether the price be above or below one dollar.
Now having described the price tag thereof, reference should be had to the claim which follows:
I now claim:
1. A basic price tag which is useful for removably and interchangeably mounting a variety of product name strips anda variety of large digts and smaller digits;
such tag being a thin resilient plastic panel having in the upper part of its front face four facing pockets for receiving the four corners of a product name strip;
and having in the lower part of its front face twelve digit receiving pockets arranged in three vertical rows and four horizontal rows, the pockets of the upper two horizontal rows being open at lower edges;
and the pockets of the lower two horizontal rows open at -their upper edges;
said tag having on its rear face a mounting means in the form of a anged member adjacent one longitudinal horizontal edge enabling the tag of mounted in a C-shaped molding reversibly, with the .said product name strip disposed above, or product name strip below, the digits.
