SIGN AND BILL HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,931, dated May 18, 1886.
Application filed September 1G, 1885. Serial No. 177,227. (No model.)
.T0 all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, THoMAs MoGUiRE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, haveinvented an Improved Sign and Bill Holder, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an ilnproved device whereby I am enabled to exhibit signs, bills, and other devices or objects in Vpublie or exposed places when desired, such exhibiting devices being capable of being folded up and turned out of position when not desired for use.
In carrying out my invention I form a socle eted bracket-piece adapted to be affixed to a wall or other supporting-surface, to the outer end of an extension from which is pivoted and supported a folding arm, one half of which is provided with hooks or loops for supporting express signs or calls,or other similar devices, while the other half is formed to receive and lock and hold in positiona sign or signs, bills To let,77 or other advertising media.
The accompanying drawings form part of this specification, and illustrate what I consider the best means of carrying ont the in vention.
Figure I represents a side view oi my improved device, shown applied to the front of a house. Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. l folded up. Fig. 3 is a slight modification of Fie. 1, showing the base of the bracket-pieee arranged at right angles to that shown by Fig. Il. Fig. 4l is a plan view of parts of the folding arm.
I n each of the views similarletters of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts wherever they occur.
A represents the wall of ahouse or structure, and B a bracket-piece, the base b of which is suit ably applied thereto-by nails, screws,or otherwise.. Frein the base b of the bracket-piece B is extended at right angles a bearing-piece, b', `which is formed with an elongated slot, b2, adapted to receive a stud, c, carried by one halt', D', of a folding arm, D. lThe half D of the folding arm D is also provided with a second stud, c', which, when the parts are in the position shown by Figs. l and 3, rests in are cess, b, formed in the end of thebcaring-piece b. Upon the opposite side of the part D, I
form or applyloops or hooks e c, adapted te receive and hold loops or other attaching means for supporting express7 or other signs or devices. At the outer end of the part D, I form an elongated slot, e2, adapted to receive and support a stud` f, carried. by one end of the second part, D, of the arm D. rlhe part D' isalso formed with a recess, e, adapted to receive and support a stud, f', carried by the part D2. Upon the upper surface of the part D2 is formed a projection, F, which is recessed to receive the end of a locking-bar, G, the opposite end of which is provided with a loop, H,or other equivalentretainin g means, for the purpose of securing that end and consequently the whole of the locking-bar G- correctly in position on the part DE.
In the drawings I have shown the lockingbar G retained in position bya loop, II,whicl1 passes through a slot in the outer end of the part D2, and is secured on the under side by a padlock, I, the bow of which is passed through the outer end of the loop H, which projects through the outer end ofthe part D".v
K represents an advertising sign or bill, which is by preference mounted on a rigid frame. The sign K is supported by hooks or bands r,which are firmly attached to the sign K, and at their upper ends are so constructed as to be capable of being slid over the end of the part D2, as shown by Figs. I and 3, and when so slid over of being retained on the said part D`l by the lockingbar G, so that the sign, die., cannot be removed without releasing the locking-bar (i from the part 1);.
The great advantages of my device are that signs or devices can be exposed, as shown by Figs. I and 3, during the day-time or while desired, but at night or at other desired times the part D may be folded np upon the part D', and the combined parts D D of the arm D folded back against the wall or other sup porting means, A,so as to be out ofthe way, and therefore not liable to damage by malicious persons or by the elements.
In the end ot' the part D', I have formed a slot, c", for the reception of the stud j" when the part D2 is folded back upon the part D' previous to its heilig turned with the part D on the stud c, so that the whole may beifolded up against the house or support A. Supposing the parts to be in the position shown by IOC Figs. l and 3, and it is desired to fold up the device,it is simply necessary to raise the outer end of the part D2 and pull it slightly forward. It can then be folded on the part D. The part D is then pulled slightly forward and the whole folded up against the Wall or support A. The hooks e e on one side of the part D serve as guides to support and hold the part D7 when the part D2 is folded upon the part D', as Shown by Fig. 2.
Modications may be made in my invention. I can secure the end of the locking-bar G by a screw-nut, or by a sliding link or other suitable retaining means adapted to hold the said locking-bar in position to prevent the improper removal of a sign from the part D2.
Having thus described my invention, what claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1, In a pivoted folding device for supporting signs, bills, or other advertising devices, the combination, with the bracket-piece B, slot b2, and recess b3, of a folding arm, D', having suspending devices e e, substantially as shown and described. l
2. In a pivoted device for supporting signs, bills, or other devices for advertising, the combination, With the bracket-piece B, slot b2, and recess b, of the parts DDpivoted and supported together as described, and a locking-bar, G, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In'witness whereof I havehereunto set my hand this 14th day of September, 1885.
