Dec. 24, 1968 M. LEVY 3,417,861
DISPLAY CONTAINER Filed July 6. 1967 INVENTOR United States Patent 3,417,861 DISPLAY CONTAINER Milton Levy, Woodmere, N .Y. (43-47 W. 23rd St., New York, N.Y. 10010) Filed July 6, 1967, Ser. No. 651,605 4 Claims. (Cl. 20645.28)
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A hollow cylindrical container having readily mountable bottom closure and a slidable and swingable top closure, with means for holding the cover in swung upright position, the cover being adapted to bear advertising matter on either or both surfaces thereof. The bottom closure end cover have means in common for mounting the same.
An object of the invention is to provide a container with novel means in common for mounting or positioning the bottom closure and the top clousure.
The invention comprises a hollow cylindrical container formed of suitable plastic material with a hinged cover and means in common for mounting or positioning the cover and bottom of the container.
Another object is to provide a hinged cover that is adapted to serve as both a cover and an advertising medium as desired.
Another object is to provide a readily manipulable display cover arranged to swing upwardly when displaying the goods or to swing over the top of the container when the goods are not exhibited.
A specific object of the invention is to provide a slidable cover for a container with a tongue for securely holding the cover in a vertical position.
Brief description of the views of the drawings FIGURE 1 is a top perspective view of a container embodying the invention, the cover being shown in closed position in full lines and in open position in dash lines.
FIG. 2 is a similar view with the cover in open position in full lines.
FIG. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the plane of the line 33 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 is a disassembled elevational view of the bottom closure and cover and connection therebetween.
Detailed description of the drawing Referring now in detail to the various views of the drawings, in FIG. 1 a container embodying the invention is shown. The container 10 comprises a hollow cylindrical body 12 of transparent plastic material, but may be made of cardboard or any other suitable material. The body may be formed from a rectangular blank of plastic material looped With its end edges overlapping and secured to each other by adhesive. The top edge of the body 12 is formed with a closed bead 16 and the bottom edge with an open bead 18.
In accordance with the present invention, the open bottom end of the body is closed by a cardboard disc 20 seated on the top edge of the open bead 18. An elongated rectangular shaped tongue 22 is formed on the periphery of the disc 20.
The juncture between the tongue and body of the disc is formed with a score line 24 forming a continuation of the periphery of the disc. The tongue at its free end is formed with a central hole 26. The tongue is bent along the score line at right angles to the plane of the disc 20 along the score line 24 so that the disc seats on the bead 18 and the tongue extends upwardly to a point adjacent the top bead 16 closely spaced from the inner surface of the body of the container.
. body 12 of the container.
A cover or top closure is provided for the top opening in the body of the container in the form of a substantial circular cardboard disc 34 having an outwardly extending tapering tongue 36 extending from the flat portion of the periphery of the disc thereby providing shoulders 38 and 38. An elongated closed slot 40 is formed in the tongue 36 longitudinally thereof. A fold line 42 is formed across the tongue 36 adjacent its inner end, the fold line intersecting the slot 40, outwardly of the shoulders 38. The tongue 36 slidably fits in the clearance 32 between the 22 and body 12 of the container and is held therein against removal by the rivet 30 extending through aligned holes and the slot 40 in the tongue 36. The tongue 36 and slot 40 herein are so dimensioned that the cover 34 may be manually pulled outwardly or upwardly of the body of the container until the fold line 42 moves above the top peripheral bead 16 of the body of the container .as shown in dash lines in FIG. 1. When in this position, the cover 34 may be folded over the top opening in the body of the container to close said opening as shown in FIG. 1.
Contrariwise, when the cover 34 is pushed downwardly the fold line 42 is moved down to a position between the top of the tongue 22 on bottom closure disc 20 and the body 12 of the container whereby folding is prevented and the cover 34 is held in upright position by the interlock of the tongues and body as shown in FIGS. 2 and 3.
The invention contemplates that the inner surface of the cover when closed contains indicia as indicated at 44 constituting advertising matter of the contents of the container, so that then when the cover is in open-held position as shown in FIG. 2, the advertising matter 44 will be visible to the viewer. The other surface of the cover 34 may also contain advertising matter. The cover 34 may be formed with a hole 48 for hanging on a nail or the like.
I claim:
1. A container having a hollow cylindrical container open at both ends, a disc-shaped member closing the opening in the bottom thereof, another disc-shaped member adapted to close the opening in the top thereof, means of connection between said disc-shaped members for selectively holding the top closure disc in upright open position, the connection between the top and bottom disc-shaped members including an integral tongue extending from the periphery of the bottom disc at right angles to the plane of the body of said bottom disc shaped member extending along the body of the container and slightly spaced therefrom, an integral tongue on the top disc-shaped member extending downwardly into the space between the bottom disc-shaped member tongue and body of the container, said tongues having aligned openings, the opening in the tongue on the top cover disc-shaped member being elongated, and a double headed rivet extending through said aligned openings whereby the top disc shaped member is adapted to move in and out relative to the body of the container, a portion of the tongue on the top cover disc-shaped member and a portion of said elongated opening extending over the top of the body of the container in closed position of said top cover disc-shaped member so that the tongue on the top cover disc-shaped member may be moved inwardly of the top edge of the body between the tongue on the bottom disc-shaped member and the body of the container for holding the top cover disc-shaped member against folding and in upright position.
2. A container as defined in claim 1 wherein the body of the container is formed of plastic and the bottom discshaped member, top disc-shaped member and means of connection therebetween is formed of cardboard.
3.
