Be it known that we, HENRY ALEXANDER OTTO, AUG US'I M ER'LES, and J OHN A. Mrtrsorr, citizens of the United States, residing at Allegheny City, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pi pe-Hangers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description 01' the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

Our invention has relation to pipe-hangers, and relates more particularly-to that class of pipe-hangers wherein a ring, loop, or stirrup is attached to the end of a screw threaded bolt or support, which latter is screwed into the wall, ceiling, or other place from which the pipe is to be suspended, while the loop contains and sustains the pipe.

Our invention has for its object the provision of a pipe-hanger of novel and ingenious construction, of but slight cost, and requiring but little fitting or finishing in the manufacture of the same.

Having these objects in view, our invention consists in the peculiar construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved hanger complete. Fig. 2 is a top view, and Fig. 3 a vertical sectional view, of the same; and Fig. 4. is an elevation of the hanger ready for the reception of a pipe.

The head 0 and the loop 13 are made in two parts, the head being divided vertically at one side of the vertical slot D, and the loop being divided to one side of its center.

The piece made separate from the head and loop will be called the tongue, and is lettcred F, and it will be noted that when the said tongue is removed from the loop the latter is left open on one side, and as the upper part of the tongue forms one side of the vertical slot D and the cavity (1 the bolt may be detached from the head by moving it sidewise.

On each side of the vertical slot D, near its edge, are formed grooves e e, and upon the face of the tongue next to said slot is formed a square block, f, having all of its sides undercut or beveled inwardly, as seen at f The edges of the block f fit in and slide in the grooves c 0, thus makinga dovetaileonnection between the tongue and the head 0. Vhen the tongue is aligned with the bolt, asin Figs. 1, 2, and 3, its lower end meets the end of the loop B, and thus completes the circle of said loop, entirely surrounding the pipe laidl therein. The lower end of the tongue is formed with a lug, g, and the end of the loop is formed with a notch, 71 for the reception of said lug, the connection thus made serving to prevent lateral play or the tongue, and somewhat relieving the strain on the dovetail connection of the tongue and head.

Figs. 1, 2, and 3 show the loop and tongue in the position which they should occupy after the pipe has been'finally adjusted in position. In Fig. 41. the hanger is illustrated as ready for the reception of the pipe. In this figureit will be observed that the tongue standsat right angles to the bolt and loop, leaving the latter open on one side for the entrance of the pipe.

To arrange the hanger in theposition shown in Fig. 4, the tongue is slipped up in the direc tion of the bolt, and after the edges of the block f are out of the grooves e e the tongue is turned around at right angles to the bolt and loop. The top and bottom edges of the block f are now passed into the grooves 06, and the tongue remains in the position shown in Fig. 4.

The hanger complete, it will be seen, consists of but three partsthe loop, the bolt, and the removable tongue. The loop and the tongue may be readily cast in proper form, requiring but little or no fitting or finishing, and the bolt is already an article of manufacture readily attainable.

If desired, the bolt may be provided with a 5 may be turned, the square head of the latter fitting its square socket in thehead of the loop, and the bolt being therefore held rigidly therein.

3. In a pipe-hanger, the combination,with a loop and a head made integral therewith and provided with a dovetail groove, of a tongue having a square block dovetailed on all sides and adapted to fit in said groove in two positions, substantially as described.

4. In a pipe-hanger, the combination, with the loop 13, open at one side, the head 0, having the vertical slot D, with socket d'and grooves e e, ofthe bolt A and the'tongueF, provided with block f, beveled on all sides and adapted to fit in said grooves, substantially as described.
