To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY D. S'riMsoN, 'a citizen of the United States, `residing in the cityand county of Philadelphia,- State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new andnsefullmprovenient in Machines for Cutting Paper Boxes, 85e. ,which improvement is fully set forth in the following specilication and accompanying drawings, in which- Figurel represents a central transverse vertical section of a. paperboX-cu'tting machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal vertical section thereof. Fig, 3 represents ahorizontal section in linex w, Fig. 2. Fig. LL'representsablank, one side of which is cnt bythe 1nachine,tlie saine being on a reduced scale. 4
' Similar letters of -reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consistsof a machine adapted for cutting paper for paper boxes embodying laterally-adjustable knives andshears and other details, as will be hereinafter vfully setforth:
Referring to the drawings, A represents the frame of the machine, and B represents the ta ble thereof.
C re )resents knives or cutters which are connected with afi-anic formed of the upper erossdiead, D, the lower cross-head, E, and vertical rods F, connecting said heads, the rods passing through guides a on the frame ofthe machine. On the upper cross-head, D, are bosses b, to which the knives C are screwed or bolted, said bosses being laterally movable` on the cross-head, whereby the 4knives may be set nearer to 'or fart-her from each other, and thus adjusted relatively to requirements, the bosses being provided with set-screws c, for purposes of holding the knives in their adjusted positions.
'G represents the bed knives or shears, each -fornied of two sharp-edged bars, d, between which a cutter, C, moves during the cutting operation. The s hears are supported on flanges or ledges e of the table B, and held by bars H, which occupy recesses on the upper faces of the ends of the shears, said bars H being clamped against the shears' by screws J, which are fitted tol-the table B.
It will be scent-hat by loosening the screws to those just above stated.
J the shears may be laterally shifted' on the table and adjusted relatively to'thc knives U, after whiehthe clamping-bars H are tightened by the screws .Land thus the shears are secu rely held.
As `knives or critters -ot` various thicknesses are required for producing eutsin the paper of dii'erent widths, provision is made to.
adjust the shears relatively thereto by the formation of the same of separable bars 1, each of which is movable and adjustable relatively to the knife or cutters. The vseparable bars also permit the ready removal and sharpening ofthe shears and reapplicnlion oi' the same to the table of the machine. Forhcutting an angular slot in the paper- I employ an angular k-ni E'e er ciitter,-.(l,`=',1liavluga shank, C,which passes between and is guided j by the two bars forming thebed-knit'e or shears G, the said bed knife being ol' coincident form, (sce Fig.3,) the slot being show n in Fig. L1,*forining a locking-tongue in the fold' or Hap of the, box. -The paper `to be cnt is properly located in the shears andrest-ed against gages or guides, forms of which are shown at ff and g. Power is then applied to the machine, so as to lower the knives, and as they descend they cutthrough the paper and pass through the shea-rs, thus making a clean and sharp cut. The knives-then rise and the cut papel-is reversed, so as to eut another side thereoor rel moved, so that a fresh blank or piece of paper may be applied, and the knives are again lowered, and the subsequent operation is similar The knife-carrying frame may have a pit man connected with it, thepsnme being opi'- erated by a crank-shaft, 7i., which is provided with a power-pulley; or, in lieu thereof, a toottreadle may be employed. To either feature` however, l do not limit myself, as any suit able means for lowering and raising the i rame may be adopted.
Havingthus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A paper-cutting machine having a bed knife or-shears composed ot' two bars and a blade formed with a shank guided between said bars, substantially as and l'or the purpose set forth.
- adjustable shears formed of separable parts,
2. A paper-cutting machine having laterl encircle the crossdw'ad of the frame and proro f ally-adjustable shears and a clampingbar I vided with set screws and said shears being therefor, substantially as and for the purpose snpportedon thetable o r frame of. the maset. forth. l v l chine and Seem-ed by clamping-bars, substan- 3. A papencutling machineA having latertinlly ns vnfl forl-hepnrpose set forth. allymljustable blades or cutters, a' rising and HENRY D.
