No. 591,742 13 Claims. (Cl. 53-78) The present invention relates to a coin counting and wrapping machine.
An automatic coin selecting, counting and wrapping machine by means of which coins of the same size are automatically selected and wrapped in a predetermined number has heretofore been known and used widely in banks or other facilities where coins are handled in a large quantity. Generally, in such a machine, coins are handled in either one of two ways; one is to stack coins in a predetermined number and wrap them with paper or other wrapping materials and another is to pack coins in a bag in a predetermined number which is far greater than in :the case of wrapping the coins with a wrapping paper as mentioned above. Conventional coin counting and wrapping machines are usually designed to be used for both of these purposes. Where coins are desired to be wrapped with a wrapping paper in a predetermined number, the coins counted for the predetermined number are delivered into a wrapping section in the machine, whereas where the coins are to be packed in a bag, it is necessary for the coins to be taken out from a path leading from the counting section to the wrapping section so as to be introduced into the bag before entering the wrapping section. In order to achieve this, in conventional machines, there is provided an adapter which is adapted to be disposed intermediate the aforementioned path from the coin counting section -to the wrapping section and by means of which the coins being delivered on the path are removed from said path to be introduced into a bag.
Such conventional machines, however, are not satisfactory in that the handling thereof is complicated due to the fact that, before the operation, the adapter must be mounted on the machine so as to form a path for introducing coins into a bag therealong and, in addition, a knob must be operated for setting the number of coins to be packed at one time. Another disadvantage is that, since the above-mentioned adapter is provided separately from the machine, it must be mounted on the machine manually at each time when it is to be used and it must be stored at a suitable place when it is not in use, so that not only is the mounting on or removal from the machine of the adapter troublesome but also there is a fear of the adapters being lost during storage.
It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to eliminate the foregoing drawbacks possessed by the conventional coin counting and wrapping machines.
Another object of the invention is to provide a coin counting and wrapping machine of the type in which a path for leading coins into a bag thereon may be established by a single operation and there is provided a mechanism which provides for the passage of the coins through a counting section in a number in which they are to be packed in a bag.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a coin counting and wrapping machine of the type specified in which a movable section is provided in the path leading from the counting section to the wrapping section, so that the coin path leading to the wrapping section be shifted to the coin packing position by moving said movable section.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a coin counting and wrapping machine of the type specied in which control means for the coin counting section is operatively connected to said movable section.

Referring now ot FIG. 1, a coin counting and wrapping machine includes a coin selecting section A, a coin counting section B and a coin wrapping section C, said coin counting section B being arranged adjacent to an exit of the coin selecting section A, said coin wrapping section C being arranged below the coin counting section B and both of said coin counting section B and said coin wrapping section C communicating with each other through a substantially vertical coin passage D.
The coin selecting section A includes a rotary disc 1 and the exit 2 of said coin selecting section A is formed adjacent to the outer periphery of said rotary disc 1. At the exit 2 is disposed a movable adjusting member 3 lhaving an arcuate inner peripheral edge which is arranged in adjacent relation to the outer peripheral edge of said disc 1 so as to form a slot therebetween through which coins of smaller diameters are dropped. The width of said slot is adjusted according to the diameter of the coins to be screened and coins of smaller diameters having dropped through said slot are discharged through a discharge opening not shown. The terminal edge of the movable member 3 defines an outlet channel between it and a xed member of the coin selecting section A, the width of said outlet channel corresponding to the diameter of the coins to be screened. Thus, coins of larger diameters are prevented from passing through said outlet channel. With the arrangement described, when the disc 1 is rotated at an appropriate rotational frequency, the coins supplied on the disc 1 are moved radially outwardly due to centrifugal force to be screened by said slot and outlet channel and coins of a desired kind only are discharged through the outlet channel. Since the coin selecting mechanism of the type described above is already -known and does not constitute the essential part of the present invention, no further explanation will be given thereon.
The coin counting section B, which is arranged adja- .cent to the exit 2 of the coin selecting section A, includes a star-shaped counting wheel 4 with a plurality of arcuate recesses 4a formed peripherally thereof. This wheel is secured to a vertical rotary shaft 5 which is journalled in a fixed portion of the machine. The shaft 5 has a bevel gear 6 fixed to the top end thereof as shown in FIGS. 2 to 4, which bevel gear meshes with another bevel gear 7 secured to one end of a horizontal shaft 8. The other end of the horizontal shaft 8 is connected to an integrating counter 9. Fixed to the lower end of the vertical rotary shaft 5 is a gear 1t) which is provided with a number of teeth corresponding t0 the number of recesses 4a formed in the wheel 4. This gear 10 meshes with an idler gear 11 which in turn meshes with a first counting gear 12 free to rotate about a vertical shaft. Also disposed at the exit 2 of the coin selecting section A in adjacent relation to the star-shaped counting wheel 4 is a coin delivery rubber roller 13, which is secured to one end of a horizontal shaft 14. This horizontal shaft 14 is driven from an appropriate power source by way of a pulley mounted to the other end thereof. This roller assembly is supported on a lixed frame of the machine by means of a pivot 16. The roller 13 which is retained in the position shown in FIG. 3 may be displaced upwardly as required by-rotating the roller assembly about the pivot 16 clockwise. For this purpose an electromagnetic solenoid (not shown) is provided.
The roller 13 is driven in the position shown in FIG. 3 to deliver coins which are indicated by phantom lines in FIG. 2. Each coin while being delivered fits in a recess 4a in the wheel 4 and turns said wheel by one tooth. It will be appreciated therefore that the gear and therefore gear 12 are rotated clockwise by the number of teeth corresponding to the number of coins having been delivered.
The gear 12 is formed with a slot 17 extending from the undersurface to the upper surface thereof and a pin 18 is provided in the proximity of said slot, projecting downwardly from the undersurface of said gear 12. A generally L-shaped lever l19 having a hook 19a at one end is pivotally connected to the machine frame by means of a pin 20 in such position that the end extremity of the hook 19a is engageable with the slot 17 in the gear 12 and is biased to rotate clockwise by a spring 21 which is connected to the other end of said lever 19. Due to such arrangement, the end extremity of the hook 19a of lever 19 is urged against the undersurface of the gear 12 by the bias of said spring 21. Between the undersurface of the gear 12 and the hook 19a there is disposed a swing plate 22 in order to prevent wearing of the tip end of the hook 19a due to friction between it and the undersurface of gear 12. This swing plate 22 engages the hook 19a to prevent movement of said hook towards the gear 12 beyond said swing plate. The swing plate 22 has one end secured to the machine frame by a pin 25, with the other end connected to a spring 24 which biases said swing plate to rotate counterclockwise and retains it in the position shown. The swing plate 22 is formed in its mid portion with a bent portion 22a which, when the swing plate 22 is in its normal position as shown in the iigure, engages the hook 19a of the lever 19, thereby preventing movement of said lever. It will be understood that, when the swing plate 22 is in the position shown, the hook 19a of the lever 19 does not come in contact with the undersurface of the gear 12 but when the slot 17 reaches a point close to the hook 19 upon rotation of the gear 12, the pin 18 abuts against the bent portion 22a of the lever 22 causing said lever to turn clockwise against the `bias of the spring 24. The hook 19a, therefore, is released from engagement with the lever 22 and pressed against the undersurface of the gear 12 under the action of spring 21. When the slot 17 has reached the position of the hook 19a upon further rotation of the gear 12, the hook comes in engagement with the slot 17 and thereby rotation of the gear 12 and therefore the starshaped counting wheel 4 is stopped. The engagement of the hook 19a with the slot 17 is released by means of a solenoid 23. This solenoid 23 is arranged such that its plunger pushes the end of the lever 19 opposite to the hook 19a. Upon excitation of the solenoid, the plunger 23a projects outwardly to cause the lever 19 to swing counterclockwise and thus the hook 19a is released from engagement with the slot 17. As soon as the hook 19a is cleared from the gear 12, the swing plate 22 is returned to its normal position shown in the gure under the action of spring 24 and thus the hook 19a is prevented from contacting the undersurface of the gear 12. As Will be appreciated from the foregoing description, the solenoid 23 is required to be excited only for a very short period.
In this embodiment, since the gear 12 has fty teeth, the hook 19a cornes in engagement with the slot 17 at every time after 50 coins have been counted.
A link 26 has one end connected to the lower portion of the lever 19, with the other end `connected to a second link 27 for actuating a microswitch 28. Therefore, when the lever 19 is rocked by the engagement of the hook 19a with the slot 17, an actuating arm for the microswitch is moved by way of the links 26 and 27. When the microswitch 28 is actuated upon engagement of the hook 19a with the slot 17, the coin delivery roller 13 is stopped and, at the same time, a wrapping mechanism as will be described later is actuated to wrap the coins which have already been counted and formed into stack. Upon completion of the coin wrapping operation, the solenoid 23 is excited, whereupon the plunger is projected outward to the position indicated by the chain lines in FIG. 4, moving the lower end of the lever 19 to the right as viewed in the gure and thereby causing said lever to swing counterclockwise. In this way, the hook 19a is released from engagement with the slot 17.
A second counting gear or toothed wheel 30 is rotatably mounted on a shaft 31 above the gear 12 with a portion overlapping said gear 12 and a pin provided on the gear 12, olfset from the center thereof, engages the teeth of the gear 30 to advance said gear by one tooth each time the gear 12 rotates. The gear 30 is biased t0 rotate clockwise as viewed in FIG. 5 by a torsion spring 34 which is arranged to act between a protruding tab 33 iixed to or formed integrally with the shaft 31 and the gear 30, and is retained in a predetermined position by a second protruding tab 3S, also fixed to or formed integrally with the shaft 31 of the gear 30 below said gear, and a pin 36 arranged for engagement with said protruding tab 35. The stopping position of the gear 30 may be determined optionally by operating a knob 37 which is provided at the top end of the shaft 31. A bifurcated lever or pawl 38 is connected to the machine frame by a pin 39 and the free end of one of the arms 40 thereof is connected to a spring 41, so that the other arm 42 of the lever 38 is elastically urged against the gear 30. The arm 42 of the lever 38 and the gear 30 are arranged such that the arm 42 being in engagement with the gear 30 under the influence of the spring 41 prevents the clockwise rotation of said gear 30 but does not interefere with the counterclockwise rotation of the same.
A fan-shaped cam 43 is rotatably secured by means of a pin 45 for operative engagement with the arm 40 of lever 38 and a generally L-shaped lever 44 is provided for movement integrally with said cam 43. One of the arms 44a of the lever 44 extends above the gear 30, while the other arm 44b thereof extends above the lever 19 to engage with a projection 19b formed in the upper portion of said lever 19 so as to prevent further clockwise rotation of said lever after the swing plate 22 is retracted. The gear 30 carries a pin 46 projecting from the upper surface thereof at a point slightly radially inwardly of its outer peripheral edge. This pin 46 cornes in contact with the arm 44a of the lever 44. when the gear 30 is rotated counterclockwise as viewed in FIGS. 5 and 7, to cause the lever 44 of cam 45 assembly to rotate clockwise. Upon rotation of the assembly clockwise, the arm 44b of the lever 44 is disengaged from the projection 19b of the lever 19 lirst, permitting the lever 19 to rotate counterclockwise under the action of the spring 21. The hook 19a is, therefore, pressed against the undersurface of the gear 12 and thereafter the hook 19a is brought in engagement with the slot 17 when the slot is moved to the position of said hook. Here, it is important that the location of the pin 46 is determined such that the arm 44b is released from engagement with the projection 191': when the plate 22 is moved inwardly by the pin 18. At the same time, the cam 43 acts on the arm 40 of the lever 38 to rotate said lever clockwise.
The rotation of the lever 38 results in disengagement of the arm 42 from the teeth of gear 30, so that the gear 30 is rotated clockwise under the action of the torsion spring 34 until rthe pin 36 abuts against the tab 35 mounted on the shaft 31.
The coin wrapping section C comprises a coin accumulating cylinder 50 in which coins being delivered from the coin selecting section A through the coin counting section B are to be stacked and a wrapping mechanism 51 to remove the stack of coins from said coin accumulating cylinder 50 and wrap it with a wrapping paper. The coin accumulating cylinder 50 is in communication with a passage, extending from the exit 2 of the coin selecting section A, through a coin passage D.
The coin passage D consists of a fixed passage section 52 provided above the coin accumulating cylinder 50 and a movable passage section 53. The movable passage section 53 includes a hollow square pole-shaped member 55 which is swingably connected to the machine frame by a pivot 54 and has a locking plate 56 vertically slidably connected to the front face thereof by a pair of screws 57. The locking plate 56 carries a pin 58 projecting laterally outwardly thereof, on which a locking roller 59 is secured. The locking roller 59, in the locking position, is brought in contact with the back side of a plate 60 which is xed to the machine frame, to thereby prevent the movable passage section 53 from rotating clockwise as viewed in FIG. 8. The locking plate 56 is normally held in the lower locking position by being depressed by a spring 61 but, when it is pushed upward overcoming the force of spring 61, the roller 59 is detached from the plate 60, thus releasing the movable passage section 53 from the locking position. The plate S6 is provided with a knob 62 so as to ease the releasing operation. On one side of the movable passage section 53 is provided a spring 63 which has one end secured to the machine frame and the other end connected to a pin 64 projecting outwardly from the side of the member 55 to urge said member towards the position indicated by the chain lines in FIG. 8.
In order to lock the member 55 in the inclined position as indicated by the chain lines in FIG. 8, a lock lever 65 is pivotally connected to a fixed bracket 66 by means of a pin 67. Namely, after the member 55 has been inclined in the position shown by the chain lines in FIG. 8, the lock lever 65 is rotated counterclockwise as viewed in the ligure by an operating lever 68 connected thereto and thereby a roller 69 provided at the free end of said lock lever is brought in engagement with a shoulder 55a of the member 55. The lock lever 65 is provided with a projecting arm 70 by means of which an actuating arm 71a for a microswitch 71 in the operating circuit of the wrapping mechanism is operated when the member 55 is in the vertical position as shown by the solid lines in FIG. 8, said microswitch 71 being fixed to the bracket 66.
As shown in FIGS. 5 and 7, a link 72 has one end connected to the free end of the arm 44b of L-shaped lever 44 and the other end thereof is connected to one end of the transverse arm of a T-shaped link 74 which is pivotally secured by a pin at 73. The other end of said transverse arm is arranged for contact with the back side of the hollow member 55. A link 75 has one end connected to the end f the leg of link 74 and a tension spring 76 is connected to the link 75 so as to bias said link 74 clockwise. When the hollow member S is in the vertical position as indicated by the solid lines, the end 77 of the link 74, Vas shown in FIG. 8, is pushed to the right as viewed in FIG. 8 and therefore upwardly as viewed in FIG. 5, so that the link 74 is rotated counterclockwise about the pin 73 causing the link 72 to move downward. Thus, the L-shaped lever 44 and therefore the fan-shaped cam 43 are rotated clockwise, with the result that the arm 42 of the lever 38 is released from engagement with the teeth of gear 30.
The inventive coin counting and wrapping machine of the construction described hereinabove operates in the manner `described below:
Coin wrapping operation The movable passage section of the pasage D between the coin counting section B and the coin wrapping section C is placed in the position indicated by the solid lines in FIG. 8. The cam 43 is rotated clockwise by the member 55 =by way of the links 74, 72 and lever 44 as mentioned previously to act on the lever 38 and thus the arm 42 of said lever is released from engagement with the gear 30. Under this condition, the gear 30 is returnable to its original position under the action of the spring 34 immediately after it is rotated -by the pin 32 on the gear 12 counterclockwise. Simultaneously, the arm 44b of lever 44 is dislodged from the projection 19b of the lever 19, permitting said lever 19 to be in contact with the undersurface of the gear 12 immediately after the swing plate 22 is moved inwardly.
When the machine is operated under the condition set out above, coins are delivered by the delivery roller 13, While rotating the star-'shaped counting wheel 4. Thus, the gear 12 is turned by the number of teeth corresponding to the number of coins having been delivered, through the gears 10 and 11, and completes its one full turn when a predetermined number, which is lifty in this embodiment, of coins have been delivered. The gear 12 starts to be rotated from a point at which the slot 17 is in engagement with the hook 19a and, when the gear 12 has made one ful turn, the slot 17 is again brought to a point where it is engageable with the hook 19a. The swing plate 22 which prevents the hook 19a from contacting the gear 12 is retracted immediately before the slot 17 is brought to the engaging point, so that the rotation of the gear 12 is stopped by the hook 19a when the slot 17 has reached the aforementioned engaging point.
The coins which have been delivered during this coin counting process are sent through the passage D to the coin wrapping section C where they are stacked in the coin accumulating cylinder. Upon engagement of the hook 19a with the slot 17, the microswitch 28 is closed by the lever 19, whereupon the wrapping machine is set in operation, removing the stack of coins from the coin accumulating cylinder and wrapping the same with a wrapping papenThe wrapping machine may be of any conventional type, eg., of the type disclosed by U.S. Patent No. 3,037,336. It should be noted, however, that the present invention is not restricted to the use of only such wrapping machine but mechanisms of other types may also be employed.
Coincidently with the closure of the microswitch 28, the solenoid for the delivery roller is excited, whereupon said roller is lifted from its operative position and the delivery of coins is stopped.
When the coin wrapping process has proceeded to a certain degree or completed, the solenoid 23 is excited causing the plunger 23a to project outwardly to the position indicated by the chain lines in FIG. 4. As a result, the hook 19a is released from engagement with the slot 17 and at the same time the roller 13 is returned to its operative position, commencing another cycle of coin counting process.
Coin bagging operation The movable section S3 of the passage D is tilted to the position indicated by the chain lines in FIG. 8. The arm 70 of the lever 65, therefore, is disconnected from the operating arm for the switch 71 bringing said switch in the open position. As a result, the operating circuit of the wrapping section C is opened placing said wrapping section in inoperative position. At the same time, the link 74 is rotated clockwise as viewed in FIG. 5 and thereby the link 72 is moved upward to rotate the cam 43 counterclockwise. The arm 42 of the lever 38 is, therefore, brought into engagement at its tip end with the gear 30 7 under the action of the spring 41. Then the tab 3S on the shaft 31 is positioned at a predetermined location by setting the counter knob 37 and also a bag 80 is attached to the end extremity of the movable section 53.
When the machine is set in operation under the condition described, coins are introduced from the coin counting section B into the bag 80l through the passage section 53. When the knob 37 has once been set at a number greater than the number of teeth of the gear 12, which in this embodiment is fty, coins of a predetermined number, that is fty in this embodiment, are delivered and in this case the projection 19b of lever 19 cannot engage the slot 17 even when the plate 22 is moved inwardly by the pin l18, because said projection 19b is in engagement with the arm 44b of L-shaped lever 44. Since the gear 30 is prevented from rotating clockwise by the arm 42, it is turned by one tooth by the pin 32 on the gear 12 at each full turn of said gear |12. When the gear 30 has been turned by the number of teeth corresponding to the number at which the knob was initially set, that is 2 for 100 coins and 3 for 150 coins, the pin 46 comes in engagement with the arm 44a of lever 44 to rotate said lever clockwise, and thus the arm 44b is released from engagement with the projection 19b of lever 19. Since this operation takes place substantially synchronically with the retraction of the plate 22 caused by the pin 18, the hook 19b of the lever 19 is brought in contact with the undersurface of the gear 12 and then engages the slot 17 when said slot 17 has reached to the position of said hook 19b. Upon engagement of the hook 19b with the slot 17, the rotation of the wheel 4 is stopped and simultaneously the switch 28 is closed to excite the solenoid, whereupon the roller I13 is lifted and, at the same time, the cam 43 acts on the lever 38 to release the arm 42 from engagement with the gear 30. The gear 30, therefore, is returned to the initial position under the action of spring 34 where the pin 36 is held in contact with the tab 3S. At this point, the bag S is replaced with a new one and the starting button is pushed to excite the solenoid 23, thereupon the roller 13 is returned to its operative position commencing another cycle of wrapping operation.
Where the machine operation is not desired to `be stopped at delivery of a specific number of coins, e.g. where the entire coins are to be packed in the same bag, the gear 30 is positioned by operating the knob 37 such that a portion 30a of the gear with no teeth confronts the arm 42. By doing so, the stopping lever 19 is not placed in operative position since the gear 30 returns to its original position immediately after it is rotated by the gear 12.
The details of the structure may be modiiied substantially without departing from the spirit of the invention and exclusive use of such modifications as come within the scope of appended claims is contemplated.
What is claimed is:
1. Apparatus comprising coin counting means, coin wrapping means, connecting means providing a passage through which said coin counting and said coin wrapping means are in communication with each other, said connecting means including movable means movable between a first position whereat coins are guided through said passage from the coin counting means into the coin wrapping means and a second position whereat the coins are guided through said passage from the coin counting means to a position other than the coin wrapping means,
8 and control means to deactivate said coin wrapping means when said movable means is in said second position.
2. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 comprising further means to shift said movable means and operative through said control means to activate and deactivate said coin Wrapping means.
3. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 wherein said counting means includes a wheel with peripheral recesses adapted to accommodate coins, delivery means to deliver coins into said recesses such that said wheel is rotated, a gear coupled to and driven by said wheel and provided with an opening, registration means displaceable into said opening on registration therewith, and switch means responsive to said registration means to operate said delivery means.
4. Apparatus as claimed in claim 3 comprising swing means intermediate and separating said gear and registration means and means on said gear to displace said swing means prior to registration of said registration means and opening.
5. Apparatus as claimed in claim 4 comprising supplemental control means to prevent displacement of the registration means into said opening, said supplemental control means being eiective in accordance with the position of said movable means.
6. Apparatus as claimed in claim 5 comprising a toothed wheel, a spring urging said wheel to rotate, a projection on said gear to rotate. said toothed wheel against the force of said spring, and pawl means preventing the wheel -from returning under the -force of said spring after being rotated by said projection.
7. Apparatus as claimed in claim 6 comprising cam means actuated by said supplemental control means and controlling engagement of said pawl means with said toothed wheel.
8. Apparatus as claimed in claim 7 comprising a pivoted link displaceable by said movable means and coupled to said supplemental control means and cam means to operate the same.
9. Apparatus as claimed in claim 8 comprising locking means to prevent displacement of said movable means.
10. Apparatus as claimed in claim 9, wherein said movable means includes a pivotal tube, comprising a pivotal lever and an arm pivoted by said lever and swingable against said tube to pivot the same.
11. Apparatus as claimed in claim l10 comprising adjustable means on said toothed wheel to deactivate said supplemental control means.
12. Apparatus as claimed in claim y11 wherein said pawl means is a bifurcated lever including two arms one of which engages said toothed wheel.
13. Apparatus as claimed in claim 112, wherein said cam means and said supplemental control means include a cam and lever and a common shaft whereon the cam and lever are simultaneously rotated.
Claims (1)
1. APPARATUS COMPRISING COIN COUNTING MEANS, COIN WRAPPING MEANS, CONNECTING MEANS PROVIDING A PASSAGE THROUGH WHICH SAID COIN COUNTING AND SAID COIN WRAPPING MEANS ARE IN COMMUNICATION WITH EACH OTHER, SAID CONNECTING MEANS INCLUDING MOVABLE MEANS MOVABLE BEBETWEEN A FIRST POSITION WHEREAT COINS ARE GUIDED THROUGH SAID PASSAGE FROM THE COIN COUNTING MEANS INTO THE COIN WRAPPING MEANS AND A SECOND POSITION WHEREAT THE COIND ARE GUIDED THROUGH SAID PASSAGE FROM THE COIN COUNTING MEANS TO A POSITION OTHER THAN THE COIN WRAPPING MEANS, AND CONTROL MEANS TO DEACTIVATE SAID COIN WRAPPING MEANS WHEN SAID MOVABLE MEANS IS IN SAID SECOND POSITION.
