11 Claims. (or. 5366) This invention relates in general to coin counting machines, and in particular to a new and useful coin counting machine having means for selecting one denomination of coin from all of the coins passed through the device and delivering it to means for counting, wrapping and storing the selected coin and with means for automatically changing over the counting, Wrapping and storing mechanism for operating on a coin of a different denomination.
The invention relates to a coin counting machine of a type in which there are several operating stations for sorting, counting and arranging the coins in rolls as well as a station for feeding the wrapping paper coming from a paper roll with a cutting device that cuts the paper pieces to the length required for packing. The device also advantageously includes a station for bordering the coin roll as it is arranged on a packing cylinder. A feature of the invention is that all of the stations are provided with adjusting means to adjust each station to the respective type of coin which is to be packed.
Coin counting and packing machines usually include a device for sorting the coins as they are delivered to the machine which includes an inclined guide rail over which the coins are directed. The guide rail includes means for selecting coins of the various denominations for delivery through chutes or coin passages in the sorting section for delivery to means for wrapping and marking the wrappings of the coins so wrapped. The sorting section is usually arranged over a drop shaft which can be adjusted in respect to dimension in order to accommodate a respective coin size which has been selected. An assembly station is arranged below the drop shaft andcoins are directed into the assembly station and assembled into a roll. Assembly station includes two roller elements for supporting the coins which are selected. The roller elements are arranged in spaced reationship by a distance corresponding to the diameter of the respective coin. The entire coin roll is then lifted by a gripping mechanism and placed in a packing station in which a selected length of paper is directed outwardly for Wrapping around the coins. Thereafter the wrapped coin roll is bordered or folded at the ends. The coin roll is thendischarged from the machine.
The adaptation of a station of such a machine to the selected type of coin requires a number of adjustments which up to the present time had to be done individually by hand in the known machines. There is always the danger that if these adjustments were not made, the machine would be inoperable and could even be damaged. In addition, such adjustments were diflicult to make and could only be made by skilled operators.
In accordance with the present invention, the above disadvantages are overcome by having means for automatically adjusting the machine in accordance with the coin which is selected. The machine advantageously includes means for adjusting the sorting mechanism, the coin delivery chute, the wrapping rollers at the wrapping station, and the feed and cutting mechanism for the wrapping paper. In a preferred arrangement, a central adjusting device is provided for all stations which includes mechanical adjusting lever connections to the device and extending to the particular stations. The me- Patented Nov. 7, 1967 chanical adjustment advantageously includes adjusting discs on an adjusting shaft in a number corresponding to the number of coin sizes which may be packed. When the adjusting shaft is rotated, the adjusting discs interrupt through an electrical control system including switches the movement of a driving motor which drives an adjusting shaft. The motor therefore drives an adjusting shaft in an amount corresponding to the position of the particular selected adjusting disc. The principal feature of the present invention is that the adjusting shaft has a number of discs which correspond to all of the possible variations of coin sizes which .are to be handled by the machine and that there is included mechanism for adjusting the various components or stations in the device for effecting proper operations on the coins. The mechanism advantageously includes a lift-off shaft which has eccentrics thereon which operate levers for the various stations and effect the simultaneous adjustment of the station in accordance with the rotation of the liftoff shaft as controlled by the control discs on the control shaft. The device advantageously includes a selector switch for operating each control disc, with each selector switch for each respective control disc being connected in series with a control switch, and with all selector switches and control switches being connected in parallel. When a selector switch is actuated, it is closed and the respective control switch associated therewith is opened.
In a preferred arrangement, the selector switches and the control switches are arranged together in a circuit including a solenoid which is connected to operate a shifting clutch mechanism for driving the lift-off shaft. In some instance it is preferable to have an adjusting motor for shifting the position of the operating mechanism of each station rather than a mechanical mechanism. In this latter instance, the selector switch would actuate a control bar which acts to drive a shifting motor.
The central adjusting device of the invention simplifies the changeover of the machine from one type of coin to another. The changeover is effected merely by pressing the key of a selector switch which is associated with the respective type of coin. The adjustment of the entire machine is then effected by a motor actuated by this selector switch. The operator has then merely to insert the wrapping paper used for the respective coins.
Accordingly, it is an object of the invention to provide an improved coin sorting, counting and folding machine capable of handling coins of various denominations, and with a selector mechanism for adjusting the sorting and wrapping mechanism in accordance with the coin which is being handled.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device which includes stations for selecting coins for wrapping and for directing the selected coins through a chute prior to their movement onto rollers for rolling and wrapping the coins which includes an adjusting shaft having a plurality of adjusting discs thereon of a number corresponding to the denominations of coins which will be handled by a machine of this type which are connected to a selector mechanism for shifting the mechanism of the various stations as necessary for rolling, wrapping, and folding the wrapping of the coins in accordance with the dimensions of the coin which is selected.
A further object of the invention 'is to provide a coin sorting and Wrapping machine which is simple in design, rugged in construction and economical to manufacture.
The various features of 'novelty which characterize the invention are pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this specification. For a better understanding of the invention, its operating advantages and specific objects attained by its use, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings and descriptive matter in which there are illustrated and described preferred embodiments of the invention.

Referring to the drawings in particular, the invention embodied therein, as particularly indicated in the overall view shown in FIG. 1, comprises an automatic coin packing machine including a coin feeding device indicated at 1 which is arranged to direct coins onto a sorting rail mechanism 2 having a sorting section indicated at 3 for coins 4 which is followed at the lower end of the sorting rail by a drop shaft or delivery chute 5 for the coins of the type selected for packing. As schematically indicated in FIG. 1, the rejected coins 4 drop through openings in the inclined sorting rail 2 and are passed through a shaft 6 into a collecting tank 7. The coins which are selected for wrapping are delivered along the sorting rail 2 to the drop shaft 5. Associated wit-h the drop shaft is a counting device (not shown) which is effective to count each coin which is delivered through the shaft.
In accordance with the invention, the sorting mechanism at the sorting section 3 may be adjusted by the mechanism indicated in FIG. 6 for varying the coin size which is selected for wrapping. In addition, the drop shaft 5 may be adjusted in accordance with the size of the coin selected, as indicated by the mechanism shown schematically in FIG. 7. The drop shaft 5 is arranged above wrapping cylinders 59, 59 and suitable guide means are provided for guiding the coins into rolls above the cylinders 59 at which location the rolls are wrapped in paper. The adjusting mechanism for the roll spacing is indicated in FIG. 8, and the adjusting mechanism for feeding the paper for cutting it into a prescribed length and for tucking the ends of the paper rolls in at each end are indicated schematically in FIGS. 9, 10, 11 and 12. The operating mechanisms for adjusting the various adjustable stations are provided in the part 8 indicated in FIG. 1. The packed coin rolls 9 are collected in a tank 10. As indicated in FIG. 1, the Wrapping paper for the coin roll is designated 11 and it is wound on a spool 12 and is fed off as indicated-at 11a.
The central adjusting device represented in FIG. 2 is contained in part 8 of the machine, which has at a suitable point the selector switches 13 corresponding to the various types of coins. In the embodiment of FIG. 1, there are altogether eight selector switches, but five may be suflicient, for example one each for 1 cent, 5 cents, 10 cents, 25 cents and 50 cents.
The central adjusting device represented schematically in FIG. 3 has an adjusting shaft 14 and a lift-off shaft 15. On the adjusting shaft are arranged, for example,
eight adjusting discs 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23. Each of the adjusting discs has on its circumference eight adjusting pins 24 of different length, corresponding to the eight types of coins, which can be designed as studs. The adjusting disc 16 serves to adjust the sorting section 3 (FIG. 6), the adjusting disc 17 serves to adjust the drop shaft 5 (FIG. 7) as well as the wrapping cylinders (FIG. 8), the adjusting disc 19 serves to adjust the paper (FIG. 9), the adjusting disc 20 for the adjustment of the paper feed (FIG. 10), the adjusting disc 21 for the adjustment of the knife (FIG. 11), and the adjusting disc 22 for the bordering (FIG. 12). If necessary, a separate adjusting disc 23 can be provided for the wrapping cylinders.
Corresponding to the eight types of coins, the adjusting shaft carries in addition eight control discs 25 (of which only five are represented in FIG. 2) and associated with the latter are eight control switches 26 (of which only five are represented) of each control disc, which are microswitches. Associated with each control switch 26 is one of the eight selector switches 13 which all act on a control bar 13a actuating a closing contact 13b (FIGS. 1 and 3).
Parallel to the adjusting shaft 14 is arranged the lift olf shaft 15, which carries for each of the adjusting discs 16 to 23 lift-off eccentrics 27, that is, eight liftoff eccentrics for eight adjusting discs, which have their maximum in the same phase position, and in addition two control discs 28 and 29 for two microswitches 30 and 31. The microswitch is parallel to the closing contact 13b and both are arranged in the circuit of the brushshifting motor 32. The switch 30 serves as a holding switch for this circuit. The switch 31 is in series with the selector switches 13 and the control switches 26 in the circuit of a pull magnet 33 which is provided with a return spring 34 (FIG. 4), both acting on a striker fork 35 of a shift clutch 36. The motor 32 and the magnet 33 are applied to the mains 37.
The motor 32 acts over a worm drive 38 (FIG. 4) on a sleeve 39 which is rotatably mounted on the adjusting shaft 14. On this sleeve is arranged a shift element 40 which engages the fork 35 and which is provided on both sides with claws 41 extending between counterclaws 42 arranged on the clutch gear 43 and the clutch disk 44, depending on the shifting position. The shift element 40 of the clutch is only represented for claritys sake in center position. Actually it is in rest position in engagement with the clutch gear 43 which is mounted on the sleeve 39 for rotation but not for axial displacement. The thrust plate 44 is fixedly mounted on the adjusting shaft 14. The clutch gear 43 is in engagement with the spur gear 45, which is fixedly mounted on the liftoff shaft 15.
The method of operation of the central adjusting device according to FIGS. 1-4 is as follows:
The changeover of the coin packing machine to another type of coin is effected by pressing the key of the selector switch 13 associated with this type of coin (for example, the right one in FIG. 3), which closes the contact 13b over the control bar 13a. The motor 32 starts and transmits the drive over the gears 43 and 45 to the lift-off shaft 15 whose control disc 28 closes the holding switch 30. The motor continues to run when the lift-off shaft has turned by degrees, the lift-off eccentrics 27 have lifted the adjusting and operating levers in the various stations of the machine to be described below from the adjusting discs 16 to 23. At this moment the switch 31, which is now open, is closed over the control disc 29 of the lift-off shaft 15, (closed position indicated in broken lines) so that the circuit is established over the pressed down selector switch 13, for example, for the 5 cent coin, and the still closed control switch 26 (broken line) for the clutch magnet 33. The clutch magnet pulls and disconnects the drive from the lift-off shaft 15 and switches it to the adjusting shaft 14. The lift-oif shaft 15,
stops at the maximum of the lift-off eccentrics 27, while the adjusting shaft 14 now turns. All control discs 25, which are connected with the adjusting shaft 14, turn, but only one is effective, namely the one which is associated with the pressed-down selector switch. These control discs are different, depending on the type of coin. As soon as the associated control switch 26, which is closed in rest position (in the represented embodiment on the right side) opens, which is the case when it reaches the radian of the adjusting shaft corresponding to the selected con trol switch 26, the circuit for the clutch magnet 33 is interrupted. The restoring spring 34 pulls back the shift element 40, disengages the adjusting shaft 14, and engages the lift-otf shaft 15. The latter now turns by another 180 degrees into its starting position in which the switch 31 is opened again. At this moment the holding switch 30 opens likewise and disconnects the motor 32, which is braked immediately. The adjusting shaft 14 and the lift-off shaft 15 are stopped. The operating levers of all stations bear on the pins 24 of all adjusting discs 16 to 23, which correspond to the selected type of coin. The adjusting process is thus automatically and simultaneously effected for all stations. After the automatic adjustment is completed, all switches are in the position represented in FIG. 1 in solid lines and the presseddown key of the selector switch being held in the depressed position by the control bar so that the coin for which the machine is set can be seen at any time. As keys for the selector switches can be used luminous keys.
FIG. 5 shows another embodiment with two brushshifting motors 32a and 32b for both shafts 14 and 15. The operation is principally the same.
The selector switches 13 are in series with the control switches 26a, and the selector switches and the control switches are again connected in parallel. The control switches 30a and 31a are actuated by the control discs 28a and 29a of the lift-off shaft 15. Both control discs are shown in zero position. The control disc 28 has a concentric recess which extends over a phase angle of 180 degrees. The control disc 29a has a depression in the 180 degree position with regard to the neutral position.
The control switch 30a controls the motor 32b of the lift-off shaft 15, while the control switch 31a switches the motor 32a of the adjusting shaft. The process is as follows:
If the right-hand selector switch 13 is pressed down, for example, current flows over the control contact 26a, which is closed at first and which is shown in broken lines, and over the reversing contact 30-1 of the control switch 30a, so that the motor 32b of the lift-off shaft 15 is connected. A special closing and holding contact as in FIG. 3 is not necessary in this arrangement. As soon as the control discs 23a and 29a are in the 180 degree position, the control switch 30a switches to the left-hand reversing contact 30-2, and the control contact 31a closes. These positions of the two control switches are shown in broken lines. The motor 32 and with it the liftoff shaft are thus stopped, and the motor 32a of the adjusting shaft 14 is connected. The lift-off shaft is in its 180 degree position, in which the lift-off eccentrics 27 become effective, as described above. The adjusting shaft 14 moves into the selected position, at which point the control switch 26a associated with the selector key switches into the position indicated by solid lines. The circuit for the motor 32a is thus interrupted and the circuit for the motor 32b of the lift-off shaft 15 is restored again over the limit switch 30a represented in broken lines. The motor 32 runs so long until the control discs assume-their neutral position in which the control switch 30a switches back to the reversing contact 30-1, so that the motor 32b is stopped. After the selection is completed, all switches are in the position indicated in FIG. 5 by solid lines.
In the stations described below there is distinguished between adjusting movement and working cycle movements. The adjusting movements take place in the stations according to FIGS. 6, 7, 8, 9 and 11, the periodic working cycle movements in the stations according to FIGS. 10 and 12, and as far as the knife in FIG. 11 is concerned, also on the knife. Each staiton has an adjusting disc 16 and a lift-off eccentric 27, which are actuated by the adjusting shaft 14 and by the lift-off shaft 15.
FIG. 6 shows the shifting of the sorting device. In the represented guide rail 2 is arranged the sorting section 3 with the cutout 3a in which a slide can be displaced by a linkage 47. This slide permits to set the sorting section to the coin diameter of the selected type of coin, and gives it its hold, so that it passes through the sorting section. Connected with the linkage 47 is the two-arm lever 100-1 which is rotatably mounted at 48-1 and Whose right end is connected with a tension spring 49-1. At both sides of the tension spring are arranged the shafts 14 and 15 with the adjusting discs 16 and the lift-oif eccentric 27. The spring 49-1 pulls the adjusting lever 100-1 toward the selected adjusting pin 24-1 and sets thus the slide 46 of the sorting section to the selected coin. The slide does not provide any support for a smaller coin so that it will first drop to the rear, then slide oifat the front and drop into a collecting tank 7. A wedge arranged in front of this slide rejects larger coins than those selected.
FIG. 7 shows the shifting device for the drop shaft 5. The adjusting disk is designated with 15 and the lift-off eccentric with 27. The adjusting lever 1100-1 is an angle lever which is supported at 48-2 on the machine frame and which is under the action of the tension spring 49-2. On its shorter arm pointing upward is articulated the twoarm guide rod 50, which is supported. at 48-3 on the machine frame in an oblong slot 51. At the end of the two-arm lever 50 is arranged an axle 52 which carries two guide rods 53 forming a V with each other, which are articulated on the lateral slides 54 of the drop shaft 5 at 55 and which have oblique slots 56 for the lateral adjustment, these slots being guided on pins 57. The longer, right-hand lever arm of the adjusting lever 100-2 bears on the selected adjusting pins 24-2 which determines the position of the two lateral guides 54.
FIG. 8 shows the shifting device for the two assembly rods 58 for the two wrapping cylinders 59. The adjusting lever 100-3 bears against the adjusting pin 24-3 of the adjusting disc 18 under the action of the tension spring 49-3. The adjusting lever, designed as an angle lever, is
supported at 48-4 and articulated over an intermediate guide rod 60 with the upper rack 61 carrying the righthand assembly rod. The left-hand assembly rod 58 is connected with the lower rack 61a, on whose arm it is secured. Between the two racks is arranged the pinion 63. The wrapping cylinders 59 are secured on the ends of onearmed, substantially vertical levers 64, which are pivotally mounted on the machine frame at 48-5 and 48-6. The
left-hand lever 64 is articulated at 66 with a lug of the lower rack 61a. The right-hand lever 64 is articulated at 63 with an angular guide rod 67. The other end of the angular guide rod 67 is connected at 69 with the upper rack 61. The assembly rods 58 are arranged above the wrapping station and between the two acts gripping mechanism which grips the counted but still unpacked coin roll and places it on the wrapping cylinders 59. This gripping mechanism is not represented for claritys sake.
The coin rolls to be packed have different lengths, corresponding to the different coin thickness. Since the position of the coin rolls in the packing machine is always oriented to the center of the roll, the lateral edges of the paper are thus displaced corresponding to its width. For the correct determination of the position of the paper roll, it suffices to adjust one of these sides by the automatic device, as shown in FIG. 9. On a fixed mandrel 12 is arranged a rear flange 70, which can be displaced by the automatic device and which determines the position of the paper roll 11. The adjusting lever 100-4, designed as an angle lever, is supported at 48-7 and articulated at 72 on a second angle lever 71, which is supported at 48-8. and connected over the intermediate guide rod 73 with the flange 70. In the selected operating position, the adjusting lever 100-4 bears on the adjusting pin 24-4 under the action of the tension spring 49-4. This way the paper is always correctly placed with regard to the position of the corresponding coin roll.
FIG. shows the adjustable paper feed which constantly repeats itself in the working cycle of the machine. The angle lever 100-5, which is rotatably mounted at 48-9, bears on the selected adjusting pin 24-5 of the adjusting disc 20 under the action of the spring 4-9-5. This stop pin determines the starting position of the lever 100-5 actually by the cam disc 74, which is secured on a driven cam shaft 75. A toothed segment 76 meshes with the gear 77 of the lower feed cylinder 78. The upper feed cylinder, which turns freely, but which is springand weight-loaded, is designated with 79, and the paper moving between the two with 11a. The feed length, determined by the tooth segment 76 due to the rotation of the cam disc, has always the same end point, while the starting point of the movement is determined by the respective height of the selected adjusting pin.
The adjustable paper knife mechanism is represented in FIG. 11. For wrapping the coins it is not only necessary to vary the paper length according to FIG. 10, but the paper knife, which cuts off the paper pieces from the roll 11, must be moved into a corresponding position. This is effected by the adjusting lever 100-6, which is rotatably mounted at 48-10. It is designed as an angle lever and connected by an intermediate guide rod 80 with a slide 82 longitudinally guided between rollers 81. This slide has an opening 83. The knife 84 moving up and down by a drive (not represented) is guided in a traverse 85 of the slide and is set by means of the adjusting lever 100-6 to the paper length suitable for the respective coin.
The wrapped coin roll is bordered at the ends, being turned about its axis by the wrapping cylinders 59 (FIG. 8), which are both driven. The path of the bordering slides must principally always be the same. Since the coin rolls have different lengths, however, the starting point of the movement of the bordering slide must be shifted. The automatic device effecting this shift is represented in FIG. 12. For the adjustment of the starting point of the bordering slide is used the adjusting lever 100-7, which bears on the selected adjusting pin 24-7 under the action of the spring 49-7. The adjusting movement acts on two bordering slides 86 which carry bordering hooks 87 and which are connected with a tension spring 88 which pulls the two bordering hooks together. The bordering slides move on guide bars 86a. The paper is bordered by means of the bordering hooks 87 at the end of the coin roll 9 so that the last coins of the roll are visible. The bordering is a periodic working cycle movement which is controlled by the control disc 74a secured on the cam shaft 75. The starting point of this movement is determined by the adjusting lever 100-7, which is supported at 48-1. To this end the end of the adjusting lever is connected with a chain 89, which runs over a roller 90 of a second lever 91, supported at 92, and which carries at its free end a roller 93 which is admitted by the cam disc 74a. The chain runs over two deflecting rollers 94 and terminates in a connecting piece 95 of two additional chains 96 and 97. The chain 96 is secured on the left-hand bordering slide 86 and runs over a deflecting roller 98. The other chain 97 is secured on the right-hand bordering slide 36 and runs over two deflecting rollers 99. The chain system is under the action of the tension spring 88, which also has the effect that the roller 93 always bears against the circumference of the control disc 74a. Since the adjusting lever 100-7 determines the starting point of the movement of the bordering slide, the cam disc 74a controls the S movement of the bordering slides and thus of the bordering hooks. After the packed coin roll 9 is released, it is dropped into a tank 10, as represented in FIG. 10.
While specific embodiments of the invention have been shown and described in detail to illustrate the application of the inventive principles, it will be understood that the invention may be embodied otherwise without departing from such principles.
