Be itknown that I, SIEGFRED Lnseuzmnn, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hod son and State of New Jersey, have invented certain newand useful Improvementsin Furniture, of which the following is a specifica tion.

My invention relates to an improvement in furniture, and more particularly to extensiontablcs, the object being to provide an article of this character which shall be simple and economical in its constrncton, capable of ready adjustment, which shall present a neat and finished appearance, and which shall be strong and durable.

My invention consists in certain novel fea tures of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspectiveview of my improvement, show ing end of table in its extended form, the top being detached therefrom. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view with top attached. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of drum, showing spring. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 6 shows my improvement as applied to window-shutter in section.

A represents two casings or boxes, each adapted to contain a spring-actuated drum or roller, B, and supported by the legs or standards O, secured to the under side thereof. The sides a of these casings A extend inwardly toward the center of the table, and have secured to their inner sides the pieces I), provided with laterally-extending lugs 0.

Against the inner faces of the pieces I) fit the sliding pieces cl, each provided with an elongated slot, 6, in which fits the lug c, said pieces (Z being held in their proper relative positions by means of the crosspiecesf. To the forward ends of these sliding pieces (I are secured the inwardly-projectinglugs g, adapted topass through and travel in the slots l1, formed in the beams '13, the ends of the lugs having the pegsj secured thereto'for the purpose of retaining the parts in their proper relative positions, and also serve for guiding the pieces d in their longitudinal movements.

To the beams i are secured the cross-pieces k it" for the purpose of holding the beams in position, and to which former are secured the legs or standards Z, and braces Z, adapted to support the center of the table and prevent the same from sagging. hen the end of the table is pulled outwardly, the lugs a will travel in the slots 8 until they strike the end thereof, whereupon the sliding pieces (I will also be drawn outwardly, the lugs g traveling in the sloth. Any number of sliding pieces (2 may be used, and hence the table may be made as long as desired. This construction or frame is very simple, may be made light and strong, can be extended to a great length, and when in its closed adjustment is very compact and occupies but very little room.

Witliin the casings A are secured the spri ugactuated drums B, to which are secured the ends of the top 0. The central portion, 0, of this top, which extends between the two casings when the table is folded, is secured to one of the beams i, and made solid or rigid, similar to the tops of ordinary tables, but the ends thereof are constructed of slats or strips 0 secured together by means of the leather strips 0 or their equivalents, thereby rendering said ends flexible and capable of being wound on the drums. The casings A extend outwardly beyond the pieces a, and are each provided with a top or cover, A. The central portion, a, of the top 0 is of such width that the edges will be in a straight line with the ends of the casings A; but the ends of said top are somewhat narrower ior the purpose of allowing them to enter the casing and be wound on the drums. \Vhen the table is extended or drawn out the ends of the top 0 will be narrower than the middle portion, the top of the table thus presenting an irregular outline. To supply this deficiency, I hinge to the ends of the portion 0 the strips 0", the free ends of which, when the table is in its closed adjustment, are swung up under the portion 0, and secured thereto by a bolt or other suitable means. W hen the table is extended, the strips 0 are swung around until the free ends thereof fit against the ends of the casings, the width of said strips being such that the edges of the top and casings will be in a straight line. The ends of strips are secured in any desired manner to the casings A, and serve to prevent the table from returning to its closed position.

By these means the several parts composing the top of the table lie in the same horizontal plane, practically forming a solid or rigid top similar to that of ordinary tables, at the same time possessing the adv antage ofbeing flexible.

My improved table is very simple in its construction, can be so built that it may be extended to any length, and can be produced at a small initial cost.

When desired to fold the table, it is simply necessary to lower the strips 0, and by pushing the ends toward each other the tops will fold automatically, the necessity of removing the leaves,as is the case with tables as now ordinarily constructed, being obviated.

My improved table-top may also be ap plied to shutters, gates, or doors.

In Fig. 6 of the drawings 1 have shown an improved shutter constructed in accordance with my invention. The spring roller or drum is located within the frame A, and the shutter,which is constructed of small strips secured together by any desired .means, is wound thereon. The shutter may be so c0nstructed that the free end thereof may be used to close the Opening on the frame, and thus prevent any defacing thereof. hen desired to open the shutters, the ends thereof aresimply pulled outwardly, and by any convenient means attached to the frame A, locked in position, and when desired to close them are simply allowed to wind around the drum.

I am aware that tables have heretofore been constructed with flexible tops, adapted,when

the table is in its closed adjustment, to be folded, such construction being shown in Patent No. 278,830, granted to R. \V. Tabener, June 5, 1888. I am also aware that a springactuated drum has been employed in connec tion with a flexible tabletop, such being shown in Patent No.185,649, granted to J. R. Shirley, December 26, 1876, and hence I make no broad claim to such; but

WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An extension table consisting, essentially, of the frame constructed substantially as described, casings A, secured to the ends thereof, spring rollers or drums B, secured within the casings, a rigid top, 0, secured to the frame and having its ends flexible and attached to the drums, and strips 0, hinged to the top and fitting against the frame for securing the parts in their proper relative positions, substantially as described.
