Be it known that I, JOHN CHARLES FRE- MONT McGAULEY,a citizen of the United States, residing at Crooked Creek, in the county of Ford and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gar- Oouplings, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in car-couplings; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

This invention is an improvement on the Y car-coupling described in my application for Letters Patent of the United States, Serial No. 187,867, filed November 14, 1885.
A represents the draw-head,'which is provided on one side with the vertically-extending mouth B, and which has the central opening, C, for the usual couplinglink, and the laterally-projecting ears D,which extend from the draw-head on the side opposite the mouth B lower projecting spindle of which is a coiled spring, F, one end of the said spring being attached in the side of the opening made to receive the spindle, and the other end thereof engaging with an arm, G, which is secured on the lower end of the spindle. This spring keeps the detent normally in the position shown in Fig. 5.
In between the ears D is pivoted acouplinghook, II-sueh as described in my application before referred to-the said hook being adapted to enter the month B of the opposing` coupling and to engage with the springactuated pivoted detent therein.

rock-shaft being jonrnaled in horizontal aligned openings that are made in the lower; end of the ears L, and to the said shaft isy firmly attached a pawl, T, which is adapted to engage the opening n of the link when the latter is moved rearwardly, and the rock-shaft is turned upwardly by means of the mechanism to be hereinafter described.

The said -rods are also provided neartheir. inner ends with arms n', which extend at right angles from therods, and are connected to the arms S' of the rock-shaft S by meansof chains n2. The outer ends of the rods U and U are bent to forni handles, as shown, andthe outer end of the rod U is suspended from the front end of the car by means of a cord or strap, V.
Vhen cars provided with my improved form of coupling come together,the couplinghook H of one coupling enters the mouth B ofthe other and engages with the spriugactuated detent E therein, and the cars are thus coupled together,automatically and without the necessity of abrakeinan going between the cars and endangering life' or limb. By drawing either ofthe rods U or U outwardly from the side of the car, (the said rods being connected to the spring-actuated pivoted detent by means of the bell-crank levers, the slidinglink, the arm G, and the chain connecting the link with the is moved yinwardly in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5, and releases the coupling-hook and thus nncouples the car. Vhen it is desired to maintain the detent in this position and thus permit two cars to come together without coupling, as is frequently the case when cars are switched onto or from a siding, the rods U and U, when being drawn outwardly to their full extent, are also turned through about quarter of a circle, causing their arms u to move rearwardly, and thus draw upwardly on the arms S' of the rockshaft, which carries the pawl, and thus causes the pawl to engage with the notch n of the link, thus holding the detent iirmly in a closed posit-ion.

One arm of this lever is connected to the arm Z of the rod U by means of a chain, 7c', and the other arm of' the said bell crank lever is connected to the arm g2 of the rod g by means of a chain, It?. By drawing upwardly upon the rod g the arm U may be drawn outwardly, and thereby canse the detent E to be swung inwardly in Vthe'draw-head to release the couplinghook,

having the-notch or stop, and the pawl having` 'the arms S', connected with the rods U and U,
whereby the detent may be swung inwardly by drawing outwardly on the rods U and U, and locked in that position by partly rotating either of the said rods, to cause the pawl to engage with the notch or stop on the link, for the purpose set forth, substantially as de scribed.
