LEVI W. POWLS, OF VALPARAISO, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO F. W. HUNT, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,806, dated May 25, 1875; application filed February 26, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI W. POWLS, of Valparaiso, in the county of Porter and State of Indiana,haveinventeda new and Improved Method of (Jar-Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and the letters of reference thereon.
The object of my invention is to provide a means by which cars can be coupled Without,
exposing the person to the danger of being caught between the cars and injured, and to make car-coupling automatic.
To accomplish this, I keep the pin in a perpendicular position, and prevent it from being thrown out by any shock or jar by means of a tumbler, E, between the draw bar and platform, and hold it in its place, by a bridle, P, screwed down at one end to the draw-bar, and at the other end to the rim of the hunter.
I hold up the coupling-pin, until the proper time for it to drop, by means of a slide, M, which covers about one-fourth of the hole through which the pin passes at the side next to the mouth of the bunter. I shape the pin I so that but a small portion passes the slide,
and use either the hand from the platform or a lever from the side of the car to lift it.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
