UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FELIX DIAGUIRE AND OSCAR L. BILLINGS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PA.
CROSS-WALK FOR STREETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,490, dated May 11, 1886.
Application filed June 22, 1885. Serial No. 169,366.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FELIX MAGUIRE and OSCAR L. BrLLiNGs, both of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Crossalks for Streets, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to provide a crosswalk in which the stones thereof are so protected as to prevent the wearing away and destruction of their adjacent ends and the consequent damage to vehicles and expense of repair resulting therefrom.
In the drawings, Figure l isa View in perspective of a crosswalk embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a detail viewin perspective of the plate F of Fig. 1, in an inverted position; and Fig. 3 a longitudinal sectional elevation of the cross-walk shown in Fig. 1.
A is the sidewalk, B the street-pavenient, and C the curbstone, all of the ordinary and usual construction. D and E are adjacent stones of the cross-walk.
Our i uvention consists in providing the seam or line of juncture of the stones with a metallic strip or plate, F, so disposed as to cover the seam between the stones and protect the adjacent edges thereof from the ordinary wear of travel. a
In the drawings, as shown, the plate F is on its under side provided with a longitudinal rib G. This rib is on its sides provided with projections H II and J J. The upper surface of this plate is roughened in any suitable manner to prevent the slipping of animals when stepping thereon. The plate F, when in place, is recessed or let into the body of the stones, so that its upper surface is fiush with their upper surfaces. The longitudinal rib G and its projections H II and J J are let into appropriate recesses in the stones, with the result (No model.)
that the line ofj unctu re thereof is covered and protected and thelateral and vertical displacement of the plate prevented.
It is obvious that the plate F may be placed upon the upper surface of the stones without being let into the body thereof, and that the form and arrangement of the flange G and the projections thereon may be varied without departing from our invention.
It will be understood that the improvement described not only prevents the wearing of the adjacent edges of the stones of the cross-walk, and consequent injury to vehicles and animals, but it also obviates the expense of repair of the crossing and the obstruction to travel incident thereto.
Having thus described our invention, we claim 1. In combination with the adjacent ends of 60 the stones of a cross-walk, a metallic strip or plate provided on its under surface with a longituillinal rib, said plate being disposed upon and over and said rib within the seam ofjunctare, as specified.
2. In combination with the adjacent ends of the stones of a crosswalk, a metallic strip or plate provided on its under surface with a 1011- gitudinal rib, said rib being provided upon its side surfaces with projections, said plate being disposed upon and oversaid rib and its pr jections within the seam of juncture, as specified.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto signed our names this 8th day ofJune, A. D. 1885.
