UNITED STATES EDWARD H. nownna, on BUFFALO, New Yoan.
KITCHEN- siencrricarrou fol-ming part of Letters Patent No. 340,944, dated April 27, ieee.
To all whom, L': may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD H. FOWLER,
of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Kitchen-Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
llhe object of this invention is the construction of a kitcheircabinet which will serve as a convenient receptacle for the various utensils and materials used in the kitchen, and in which each material or utensil can be readily reached wheny required for use, while the space at disposal is fully utilized, thereby forming a compact and serviceable cabinet, which will u at the same timeserve the purpose of a kitchentable.
My invention consists, to these ends, of the improvements which will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is va perspective view of my improved cabinet.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the saine. Fig. 3 1s a vertical section in line x m, Fig. 2. Fig.
4 is a vertical section of a hinge of one of the nient, c, is formed, which is adapted to receive anextension, B, of the top, an ironing` board, and other large articles or utensils.
llhe extension B is provided with hooksy b,
which enter loops or eyes bf, secured to one end of the top A, and by which the extension is attached to the top when required for use7n for instance, when a person Vwishes to sit down to the' cabinet. The extension B is further supported by a sliding bar, IJ.
C C represent vertical boards or partitions arranged at right angles to. the board a, and extending from the latter forwardly to the The boards C are arranged at suitable distances from the ends of the cabinet, so as to form spaces outside of said boards and between the top and bottom Application filed May 5, 1885. Serial No. 164,510. (No model.)

plates, A A', in which spaces are arranged pivoted cases D D. The latter are pivoted to the top and bottom plates, A A, by vertical pivots d in such manner that these cases can be arranged to occupy the corner of the cabinet,'as represented in the right-hand portion of Figs. 1 and 2, in which lposition the outer long side ofthe case forms the end of the cabinet, while its outer short side forms the end portion of the front of the cabinet, or so that the case can be swung ont and its long side be placed in line with the front side of the cabinet, as represented in the left-hand portion of` Figs. l and 2, in which position the case projects beyond the end of the cabinet. The pivots d are arranged equidistant 'from the front end of the swinging case and from the inner and outer'sides thereof, whereby the total length j', which is made open at the top, and which is closed by the top plate, A, when the case D is swung under the same, while it is open when the case is swung out. The outer long side of the case D is provided with drawers g, for the reception of various meals, and the upper rear porti-on of the case D is occupied by sugar-boxes h, which are open at the top, and which are closed by the top A when the case is swung under the same, and open when the case is swung out. rihelower rear portion of the case D is providedwith a receptacle, t', for vinegar, ttc., which opens outwardly, like the drawers g. The drawers in the pivoted cases lD D open outwardly, and are accessible when the cases are swung back under the top plate as well as when the cases are swung out and placed in line with the front of the cabinet, while the receptacles in the cases which open outwardly are only accessible when the cases are swung out.
j represents a receptacle for a chopping bowl,
fand k a receptacle for a rolling-]giin,sccurcd to Ithe inner long side ofthe case D.
Z represents doors hinged to the front ends of the upright partitions O, and closing the spaces between theA inner sides of the cases D D and the partitions, so as to give access' to these spaces when required. f
m m represent similar doors hinged to th baclr` board,a,and closing the ends of the rear compartment, a2, and the spaces between the said compartment and the rear ends of the cases D D.
r[he central front portion, N, ofthe cabinet between the partitions() is occupied by annuiber of drawers and utensils, which may be arranged in a variety of ways.
As shown in the drawings, a represents the bread-board; o,the meat-board; p,thekitchen tray; q, a drawer for miscellaneous utensils; r, the scouring-box; s, the cabbage-cutter; 15, the knife-Sharpener; u, the potato-cutter; c, the spoon-tray; w,thekneadingboard; w', the butlers tray; w?, a drawer for towels, and wi drawers for tins, &c. l
Then all the receptacles are required for use, the cases D D are swung out, whereby their drawers are placed in line with the front of the cabinet, and the liour and sugar boxes are uncovered. In this position' of the cases all of the drawers of the cabinet are in line and easily accessible.
When the drawers of the pivoted cases are not used, the cases are swung backl in place, and the cabinet then occupies no more room than an ordinary kitchen-table and answers all purposes of akitchen-table, while it affords in a Very small space convenient storage for all the various materials and utensils used in a kitchen. i
Iam aware that desks have been provided with swinging or pivoted cases containing drawers or other receptacles, and I do not broadly claim such construction.
I claim as my inventionl. In a kitchen-cabinet, the combination, with a stationary central portion provided at its frontfwith suitable drawers, of a pivoted end case having drawers on its outside, the pivots of the case being arranged equidistant from the front end and the outer and inner sides of the swinging case, substantially as Aset forth.
2. In a kitchencabinet, the combination.
with the central portion, N,.having its front4 provided with suitable drawers, of the pivoted end cases,D D,a-nd hinged doors ,closing the spaces between the central portion and the cases and giving access to said spaces, substantially as set forth.
3, In a kitchen -cabinet, the combination, with the central portion, N,and rear compartment, u2, of the pivoted end cases, D D', and hinged doors m, closing the ends of the rear compartment and the spaces betweenthe rear compartment and the cases, substantially as set forth. n
