(Cl. 4-145) ABSTRACT 0F THE DISCLOSURE A shower drain base and shower Ifixture column comprising a drain basin with a central downwardly opening discharge port, and with a pyramidal column support structure having legs mounted in the basin and a column supporting platform at the top. A pedestal comprised of two upwardly converging tubes is formed integrally with the bottom of the basin, and joins together and extends through an aperture in the platform at the top. Pipes are run through the converging tubes, and have pipe coupling elements at their upper ends.
This invention deals generally with multi-station shower fixture installations of the type used in schools, industrial establishments and the like, particularly of the type involving a floor-mounted vertical column for mounting a plurality of shower heads at suitable spacings therearound, and utilizing a drain iixture as a supporting base, such as disclosed in United States Patent No. 3,184,762. The general object of the present invention is to provide improvements in the drain fixture of such installations.
In the illustrative case of Patent No. 3,184,762, the shower fixture column is in the forrn of an inverted conical shell, with a mounting base iiange at the bottom. This base flange is fastened down to a center mounting boss in the center of the shower drain fixture, and the latter is formed with a drain channel surrounding such boss. Water pipes rise from below the floor through the centrally located mounting boss, and connect with water pipes inside the conical shell. The drain fixture channel has a lateral outlet to which is connected a laterally extending drain pipe.
In some cases, a vertical drain outlet and drain pipe are needed for the requirements of the installation, and an object of the present invention is to provide a novel shower drain tixture comprising a base forming a drain basin, with a downward drain outlet port in the center of the base, and with a robust support for the shower lixture column mounted on the drain base directly over this outlet port.
In the drawings, showing an illustrative embodiment of the invention:
FIG. 1 is a vertical medial section through.` a shower drain in accordance with the invention, showing the same installed in a floor, and showing fragmentarily the lower end portion of a shower fixture column supported thereon;
FIG. 2 is a plan view of the shower drain of FIG. 1 with the strainer and shower column member removed; and
FIG. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
The shower drain is represented generally at 10, embedded in any usual manner in conc-rete floor structure 11. The drain has a round base 12 sunk in iioor structure 11, as shown, and made up of a bottom wall 13, stiffened by four radial ribs 13a on the underside thereof, a raised rim 14, a centrally located, downwardly projecting drain port or port tube 15, and an upwardly extending boss or pedestal 16. The latter is comprised of two sleeves 17 integral at their lower ends with bottom wall 13` on opposite sides of port 15, and extending upwardly and angularly toward one another from bottom wall 13 to join one another integrally in an elongated top structure 18, which is faced off iiat on top, as indicated.
A vertical drain pipe 19 leads vertically downward through the floor structure from port 15, and water pipes 20 are inserted in sleeves 17, and project downwardly from the drain base, as shown. The pipes 20 are preferably brazed to the top of Pboss 16, as at 22, and to the upper extremities of the pipes 20 are brazed adapter sleeves or nipples 24 adapted for lmaking conventional slip-joint connections with water pipes 2S inside the shell of the shower column, fragmentarily indicated at 26.
A frame ring 30 is fastened to the top of base rim 14, and to this ring 30 is secured an upper seat ring 31 for seating of the -usual domed strainer 32. It will be seen that the base 12 with the rim 14 and ring 30` form a basin for receiving water draining therein from above and from the surrounding floor, and this water drains past and between the angularly disposed sleeves 17 into the central outlet port 15.
The shower drain is completed by a pyramidal support structure or spider 40, comprised of a top support Wall or platform 41 formed with an aperture 42 snugly receiving the top 18 of boss 16, and provided with four downwardly extending and outwardly angling support legs 43. These legs are at the same angles as the sleeves 17, and two of them lie immediately outside the corresponding sleeves 17. The lower ends of the support legs -43 are formed with outwardly turned feet 44, which engage the bottom wall of the base 12, in line with ribs 13a, and are secured in place by machine screws 45 reaching through bottom wall 13 and into ribs 13a. The spider structure is made :heavy and strong, adapting it for total support of the shower column 26 on the drain base 12.
The shell 26 of the shower column has at its lower end a heavy mounting iiange 50 which engages the top wall 41 of the spider structure, and the flange 50, which may be turned down over the edges of the wall 41, is secured to the latter by heavy machine screws 52.
The shower column is thus stably supported by the drain base from a relatively small center support position, but with the load carried through substantially outwardly angling legs from a large base, in a pyramidal arrangement. Shower water received in the basin of the iixture iiows ybetween the support legs 43 and between the sleeves 17 to reach the centrally located drain port. The xture of the invention thus achieves a strong and stable mounting for the shower column from a small center area of the drain fixture, but with support legs which are outwardly angled for improvement of the base, combined with a centrally located vertical drain port, and water pipes which angle outwardly, in the downward direction, to avoid interference with and permit utiliz-ation of a drain outlet placed conveniently between the support legs.
What is claimed is:
1. A combination shower drain for an opening in the oor of a shower room and mounting fixture for a shower fixture column, comprising:
`a drain base with a bottom wall and a raised rim forming a drain basin adapted for mounting to said floor, there being a downwardly directed drain port in the center portion of said base;
a pyramidal support structure with a support platform for said shower fixture column at the top, and a plurality of outwardly angled legs extending downwardly from said platform and mounted at their lower ends on the bottom wall of said drain base outside said drain port, said platform of said support structure having an aperture therethrough;
a pedestal comprising two hollow angularly disposed tubes integral with said bottom wall of said drain base at points radially outside said drain port, said tubes being ported through said bottom wall at their lower ends, and being angularly inclined towards one another in the upward direction, the upper end portions of said tubes being integrally joined to one another, and extending through said aperture in said platform;
water supply pipes extending angularly through said tubes of said support structure to the upper side of said platform; and
pipe coupling means on the upper ends of said tubes above said platform.
