Description
Oct. 22, 1968 M. MOSKOWITZ 3,406,434
GARTER CLASP Filed Sept. 19, 1967 "i, BY 40$ 14% $5 8 ATTORNEY United States Patent York Filed Sept. 19, 1967, Ser. No. 668,795 1 Claim. (Cl. 24-245) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The garter clasp of the invention comprises two members of flexible material, preferably plastic, and composed of a front member having a T-slot laterally bounded by inset narrow guide walls at the top of which are inwardlydirected spaced projections. The front member is formed with an opening to receive a channeled button of a fabric gripping member, and the opening continues to a lower area laterally bounded with inset walls adapted to enter the channels of the button. At its top the fabric gripping member has a short neck with a forwardly extending hinge head adapted to be pressed into said T-slot of the front member and to slide along the inset guide walls thereof. In one form, the front member at its lower end has a camming projection adapted to engage the lower end of the gripping member to pull the area of the button at its front face toward flush relation with the outer face of the front member.
In one form the front member at its lower end is formed with a camming projection for engaging the lower end of the gripping member to pull the button toward flush relation with the outer face of the front member.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a composite view showing at the left the front or body member of the clasp, and at the right thereof the button-carrying fabric gripping member, to be received by the said front member.
FIG. 2 is a view in front elevation of the front member, with gripping member in position to be moved down.
FIG. 3 is an edge elevation of the structure in its position in FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 is a view in rear elevation of the two assembled front and gripping members.
FIG. 5 is an edge view of the assembly with the gripping member swung outwardly.
FIG. 6 is a view of the assembly in front elevation showing the button of the gripping member in down position.
FIG. 7 is a transverse section on the line 77, FIG. 6.
FIG. 8 is an enlarged edge view taken on the section between the arrows 88, FIG. 6, the view being fragmentary.
Referring to the drawings, at 1 is shown the clasp front member which is formed with a T-slot, the vertical aperture of the T-slot being laterally inset by narrow guide walls 2 which walls at the top carry inwardly directed spaced projections 3. Below the T-slot, said clasp front member is formed with an elongated opening, the upper area of which is generally oval and which merges into a 3,406,434 Patented Oct. 22, 1968 ice narrower open area bounded by a U-shaped inset wall 4.
The fabric gripping member carries at its top a short flat sided and narrow neck 5 with a forwardly extending head 6. In the present embodiment the fabric gripping member, which is generally indicated at 7, is formed with a rectangular opening at 8 for the sake of lightness and its lower area carries a forwardly projecting button 9, which is channeled as indicated at 10 (FIG. 1), so that the rib-like wall 4 of the body member may be received in the said channel arrangement when the gripping memher is moved downwardly.
The preferred material for the two members of the clasp is plastic. Because such material is resilient, this enables assembly by pressing the head 6, followed by its neck 5 into the T-slot of the front member 1, and thereafter the fabric gripping member may be moved up and down, with the rear edges of the head 6 engaging the front of the inset walls 2 of the said slot and with the flat sides of the neck 5 engaging the edges of said walls 2, thus by such joint action resisting turning movement of the gripping member.
In one form the front member at its lower end is formed with a camming projection 12 for engaging the lower end of the gripping member to pull the button toward flush relation with the outer face of the front member.
It will be understood that various modifications may be made in the form and arrangement of the elements constituting the embodiment shown, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. A garter clasp comprising two members composed of a first member having a T-slot laterally bounded by inset narrow guide walls and below said slot formed with a button-receiving opening which is combined with an open area laterally bounded with inset walls, and said clasp having a rearwardly positioned fabric gripping member having at its top a short neck with a forwardly extending head, the neck with its head being adapted to slide along the inset guide walls of said T-slot, said gripping member carrying an edge-channeled button receiving the inset channels of said button receiving opening of the front member, in combination with a camming projection formed on the lower rear face of saidfirst member and adapted to engage the lower end of the gripping member and adapted to pull the area of the button at its front face toward flush relation with the outer face of said first member.
