UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN TEIPEL, OF COVINGTON, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO THE Ll- GOWSKY CLAY PIGEON COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
TARGET-TRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,639, dated April 27, 1886.
Application filed January h, 1886. Serial No. 187,901.
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN TEIPEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Covington, in the county of Kenton and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Target-Traps, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement relates more particularly to clamps for holding and throwing the glass of artificial targets, of which that known to the trade as the Ligowsky Clay Pigeon is a type, and it consists in a novel device for throwing such targets.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top view of a throwing-arm and target-clamp embodying my invention, and the secondary position of the free or delivering jaw of the target-holder being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a side View of a throwingarm and target-clamp embodying my invention; Fig. 3, a side view showing a modification of the same; and Figs. l, 5, and 6 are details.
'A represents the throwing-lever or main throwing-arm ofa targettrap of any approved construction.
B is the rear or fixed jaw of the target clamp, having at or near its outer extremity a projection or stop, b. This jaw may be an extension of the arm A, and should be detiected from the line of the main arm in a direction opposite to the line of travel of the delivery-arm in its delivery-sweep, the angle of deflection being preferably less than a rightangle.
C is the forward or delivery jaw of the clamp, and is pivoted to the arm A, and provided at or near its outer extremity with a projection or stop, I).
D is a clamping-finger, preferably elastic,
.. secured to the deliveryjaw C.
ing the target, and also to hold the target against disengagement from the delivery-jaw by the sudden movement of the throwing-1e ver when released from the trigger.
(No model.)
In projecting the class of targets to which my invention is especially applicable it is desirable to impart to the target a rapid rotary motion on its vertical axis. This is effected in part by the stress of the clamps D upon the target and in part by the stress of the target upon the stopb on the delivery-jaw. It is de sirable. that means should be provided for regulating the pressure of the clamp and the resistance of the delivery jaw. I accomplish this by constructing the spring-clamp with a loop, d, as shown in Fig. 2, and by connecting it with the delivery aw by means of the screwbolt a, which passes through the upper and lower portions of the loop and through the delivery-jaw, serving as a pivot therefor, and takes into a thread in the throwing-arm. By screwing or unscrewing the bolt the pressure of the clamping-finger upon the target and the friction of the delivery-jaw upon the throwing-arm may be increased or diminished at will. The friction of the delivery-j aw upon its hearing may, however, be regulated by means of a coiled spring and bolt, as shown in Fig. 3, or by other suitable means. For the purpose of holding the clamp in position relatively to the delivery-jaw the latter is provided with a lug, 0, adapted to take into a corresponding aperture, (1, in the springclamp.
I claim as my invent-ion" 1. A target-clamp consisting of a fixed rear jaw and a pivoted delivery-jaw, both adapted to engage with the periphery of the target, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the throwing-lever of a target-trap, a target-clamp having a fixed rear jaw, a delivery-jaw pivoted to the main throwing-lever, and a spring adapted to regulate the friction of the deliveryjaw upon its bearing, substantially as and for the purpose I IOO adapted to hold the target against vertical displacement, substantially as described.
5. A target-clamp consisting of afixedjaw, a jaw pivoted to the throwing-lever, and a springclamp adapted to hold the target against vertical displacement, substantially as described.
6. In combination with the throwinglever of a target-trap, a target-clamp consisting of a fixed jaw, a jaw pivoted to the throwinglever, said jaws being provided with stops adapted to engage with the periphery of the target, and a clamp adapted to hold the target against Vertical displacement, substantially as described.
7. In combination with the throwing-lever of a targettrap, a target-clamp consisting of a fixed jaw, ajaw pivoted to the throwing-le- BEN. TEIPEL.
