FURNITURE FOR PRINTERS FORMS.

SPECIFICATION forming part'. of Letters Patent No. 340,548, dated April 27, 1886.

Application filed October 2 6, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, CHARLES W. BROWN and EDWIN H. BROWN, residing at Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furniture for Printers Forms, ,of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to furniture for printers use.

The invention consists in a variety of furniture having a metallic core and side pieces and a lling of wood, papier-mache, or similar material lighter than metal, whereby the furniture is made lighter and cheaper than if made entirely of metal, and is more uniform and durable than if made of wood alone.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a piece of furniture having metallic core or cross-bar and metallic side strips. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on the line x a".

A A indicate the side plates of the furniture, which rest against the type in the form or against the chase.

B is a cross-bar or binding-strip,which connects the two side plates, A A, but serves as a spreader to hold them apart.

The space between the plates A A alongside the spreader is filled with a strip of wood, papier-mache, or 'similar material, C, which material serves to keep the plates A A parallel with each other, and holds them to oifer resistance to side-pressure.

As shown in Figs. l and 2, the plates have Serial No. 180,989. (No model.)

preferably a slight overhang, so that the filling-piece O is held as in a dovetail groove.

The pieces C are preferably slightly concave at the outer surface, so that if any water is ab sorbed by the wood or material of which this filling-piece is composed the expansion serves rather to till the concavity than to expand the side plates, A, out of parallelism.

"When wood is used as the material of the filling-pieces, the wood is preferably chemically treated, so that it will absorb water with difficulty or not all.

The metal part is preferably cast integral about the filling-pieces, but in some eases the met-al maybe prepared rst and the fillingpieoes afterward applied.

Ve claim- 1. A piece of printers furniture having metallic side plates connected by a longitudinal bindingstrip or spreader, as described, and strips of wood covering both faces of the spreader, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with the metallic side plates and Spreaderbar, the side plates having overhang,as described, ofthe beveled strips secured against the spreader in the dovetail groove, substantially as described.
