D. A. FISKE, OF MILI/VAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN VAPOR-LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 34,053, dated January 7, 1862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, D. A. FIsKE,of the city of Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful VaporLamp; and I do hereby declare that the same is described and represented in the following specification and drawings; and to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the drawings, in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures. y
Figure l represents an isometrical view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
N represents the column or base of the lamp, O the reservoir, and A the screw to admit the introduction of lthe liquid from which the vaporis generated.
B is the liquid which passes through the tube D, through the cock E, by which the flow is-graduated, thence through the tube F and the tube of the cap Ginto the cup R. rlhe partition S separates the cup R into the two chambers T and I.
G is a cap which is screwed into the cup R, with a tube extending nearly to the bottom of the cup.
H represents a bundle of copper. wires resting on the bottom of the cup R and extending into and filling the tube of the cap G.
K is the burner directly beneath the cup R. The illuminating-flame from the burner K heats the bottom of the cup R, and this heat is conducted by the copper wires II into the tube of the cap G.
The liquid as it percolates through the wires H becomes heated, and as it reaches the heated bottom of the chamber T in the cup R is volatilized and passes into the chamber I, thence through the tube J to the burner K.
The stem O is connected with the tube J by means of the socket L. To the stem O is attached by means ol' a screw P the shadesupporter IV, upon which rests the shade M.
By means of the wires IfI and cup R the liquid is presented to a much larger heated surface. It becomes highly heated as it gradually passes through the wires and volatilizes immediately upon reaching the bottom of the chamber T. In this way the amount of gas and flame is largely increased. The wires also graduate the flow of the liquid.
By means of the stern O and shade-supporter WV the shade is firmly and elegantly secured, while by means of the screw P the shade and shade-supporter W are easily attached to and detached from the stem O, the screw being never heated by the llame.
The cap G at the top is never blackenedby the flame, and can be unscrewed, so as to permit of the wires being cleaned or replaced.
I do not claim the vaporizing-chamber T, nor the relative position of the burner K, by which the gas is generated.

The arrangement of the removable cap G and the bundle of wires H, lling the tube of said cap, in combination with the cup R, also the manner of supporting the globe M by means of the stern O and the socketL,in combination With the method of attaching and detaching the globe-supporter W by means of the screw P, substantially in the manner asand for the purposes hereinbefore described.
