BLIND OR SHUTTER FOR WINDOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,387, dated April 20, 1886.
Application filed November 20, 1885. Serial Xe. 183,457. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES THORNTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Long Branch, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey,vhave invented a new and useful Blind or Shutter for Windows, 850., of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to transom blinds or sh utters and means for operating the same, and also to the construction of the top of the window to adapt it to receive the transom blind or shutter.
The object of the invention is to furnish means for lighting and ventilating apartments without exposing the interior and without causing drafts.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a window provided with my improved transom-blind. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the window,taken on line was of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a window-frame; B, the sash, and D D the ordinary swinging blinds or shutters, hung in the usual manner. Over the top of the windowframe a hood or cornice, E, is constructed, and supported by ornamental brackets a a or other suitable means.
F represents the transom blind or shutter. It is placed in the window-frame outside the sash rabbets or grooves, and is hung by suitable hinges to the window-frame above or over the blinds D.
As shown, the transom blind or shutter is hung by its upper edge and opens upward; but I do not limit myself to that manner of hanging it. The lower or free edge of the transom-blind is provided with a rabbet, b, which, when the blind is closed, matches with a corresponding rabbet, b, on the tops of the blinds D D, forming thereby a flush connection. The transom-blind,by this construction, also serves as a lock or fastening for the tops of blinds D D. Y
The opening, closing, and adjusting of the transom-blind are done from the interior, and by devices which will now be described. Under the hood and near the front thereof is pivoted a pulley, d. Through the window-frame,in line with the pulley,is made an opening, e, communicating with the interior, and at or about the inner end of said opening is pivoted another pulley, d.
A chain, G, having one end attached to the outside of the free or swinging edge of the transomblind or shutter, is passed up over pulley d, thence'horizontally through opening 6, over pulley d, and its free end 9 hangs down alongside the window-facing in the apartment.
A book, f, or other suitable device may be attached to the window-facing, or at some other convenient point, to fasten the chain to.
By means of the chain the transom-blind can be operated from the interior and opened and closed.
More than one chain may be used, if deemed necessary, and the mode of attaching the chain to the blind may be modified or changed to adapt it to any change in the hanging of the blind that may be adopted. Moreover, in place of the chain and pulley, any other mechanical device capable of being utilized for opening and closing and ad justing the transom-blind may be substituted for it.
By means of the transom blind or shutter light can be admitted to the apartment without exposing the interior thereof. Air also can be admitted without creating a draft. Thus, when the lower part of the window is necessarily closed from any cause, the upper part can be opened and light and air admitted through the transomopening, thus giving ample light to the apartment, producing perfeet ventilation, and at the same time the inmates or occupants of the apartment are pro tected against exposure. The projecting hood Or cap shields the transomopening, preventing the rain from beating in over the transom, and also shading it from the suns rays.
I claim 1. In combination with the window frame, sash, or blinds, a transom blind or shutter hung above or over the blinds D D, "and 0on nected with the interior of the apartment by a chain, so that it can be operated and adjusted from the interior without opening the window, substantially as specified.
