To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, MILTON JaoKsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to construct a padlock having but few parts other than the tumblers, but so arranged that the shackle can be readily secured or released, and so that no excessive pressure can be brought to bear upon the tumblers for the purpose of feeling for the notches of the same in attempting to pick the lock.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional View, partly in elevation, of my improved padlock, showing theshackle secured; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the shackle released; Fig. 3, a detached perspective view ef the working parts of the lock detached from the casing; Fig. 4, a sectional plan of the lockcasing on the line l 2, Fig. 2'; and Fig. 5, a vertical section on the line 3 4, Fig. 1, with part of the shackle in elevation.

A is the main shell or casing of the lock; AJ, the cover-plate, and B the shackle, which is pivoted to the casing by a pin, c, at one corner, in the usual manner, the other end of the shackle having a notched stem, b, which enters an opening, d, in the shell or casing A, this opening containing a plug, D, which is acted upon by a spring, j', beneath the same, the release of the plug from the casing being prevented and its range of movement in said casing limited by a transverse pin, g, contained in the recess formed between flanges or collars t' at the opposite ends of the plug, as shown in Figs. l and 2. The tumblers F, of which there are six in the present instance, are hung to a pin, m, in the casing, and are acted upon by springs a, in the usual manner, so as to cause the tumblers to bear upon a seat, p, in the bottom of the casing. Above the tumblers is a dog, G, which is hung to a pin, S, and has three arms, fw w w?. The arm w is adapted to a recess, t, in a sliding bolt, H, which is guided in an opening in the casing A, the front end of the bolt when projected entering the notch o in the stem b of the shackle, as shown in Fig. l.. the tumblers have been adjusted by the key J, as shown in Fig. 2, and the notches y of the tumblers all brought yinto line with the nose a; of the dog, the said nose is caused to enter the notches, the arm fw thereby effecting the retraction of the bolt H, so as to release the stem b of the shackle and permit the projection of the same by the spring-plug D, as in Fig. 2. rlhe plug D Vwhen elevated bears against the end of the bolt H, and prevents the projection of 'the same until the stem of the shackle has been again inserted into the opening d and the notch e of said stem brought into line with the bolt, whereupon, owing to the inclination of the tumblerniotches and of the nose .r of the dog, said nose will be ejected from the notches and the dog thereby moved, so as to project the bolt and retain the shackle.

As shown in Fig. et, the opening d, for the reception of the spring-plug D, is formed wholly in a thickened portion of the main shell VA. of the lock by means of a suitable boring-tool, the necessity of forming the opening by casting being thus obviated, and as this brings the opening slightly out of center transversely the stem b of the shackle is likewise made slightly out of center, as shown in Fig. 5.

My improved padlock has but few parts,

and is so constructed that the nose of the dogcannot be caused to bear with excessive pressure upon the notched faces of the tumblers in order to enable the notches of the same to be felt by any one attempting to pick the lock, the security of the latter being thereby increased.

It will be evident that the tumblers may be operated by a turning-key instead of by a pushkey, if desired, and the lock may be modified in various other respects without departing from the main feature of my invention. For instance, the dog may be acted upon by a spring, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, the arm 102 being dispensed with, and sliding tumblers may be used instead of the pivoted tum blers shown, as will be readily understood.

I claim as my inventionl. The combination of the casing of a lock and the shackle having anotched stem with the notched tumblrs, the sliding bolt engaging with the notched stem of the shackle, and a pivoted dog having an arm engaging with said bolt, and a nose adapted to enter the notches IOO of the tumblers when the latter have been adjusted by the key, all substantially as specified.
