Definitions

  • the invention relates to hydraulic turning apparatus of the tongs-type for handling rolled material and includes turning rollers arranged on two swinging levers disposed in a common vertical plane, the turning rollers being driven each by a double contact pressure cylinder arranged in pendulum fashion.
  • Prior art tongs turners of this type may be moved laterally relative to the rolling path for such a distance that the roller table is completely free.
  • the turner operates thus on a very wide guide and cannot be employed in connection with tipping tables, as shown for example in German Patent 1,063,564.
  • Other turning apparatus, so-called under-floor tongs, turners have a number of pivot joints so that the head of the turner may be retracted below the plane of the roller table.
  • the swinging levers must thus be so formed that in spite of their common pivot shaft they may be moved relative to each other into a position in which the two turning rollers are positively guided until they are located below the plane of the roller table.
  • the two pivot levers merge in their axial projection because the particular pivot lever whose turning roller shaft is located farthest from the pivot shaft must describe or cover a larger angle in order to move its turning roller under the plane of the roller table. Accordingly, it is appropriately formed as a yoke with two bearing lug's which are located on both sides of the bearing of the other pivot lever.
  • FIGURE 1 is a vertical section along line II of FIG- URE 2
  • FIGURE 2 is a side view showing a section through the swinging bearing arrangement of the hydraulic driving cylinder.
  • the turner according to the invention is mounted in a carriage 1 which may be moved over the travelling rollers 2 under the effect of a pressure cylinder 3 in the guide rails 4 which are located between two rollers 5 of the roller table.
  • the plane of the roller table is designated in FIGURE 1 by numeral 5a.
  • a pivot shaft 6 is mounted in carriage 1 and on this shaft a yoke-like pivot lever 7 carrying a turning roller 8 on two bearing lugs 9 and a pivot lever 10 carrying the turning roller 11 are mounted.
  • the hearing lugs 9 of the pivot lever 7 are located on both sides of the bearing point of the pivot lever 10 which is bent sideways as shown in FIGURE 2 so that the two hydraulic cylinders 12 and -13 can be disposed side-by-side in different vertical planes crossing pivot shaft 6.
  • the pressure cylinder 12 engages with its piston rod 14 outside the vertical plane passing through the turning rollers at 15 on the pivot lever 7 While the pressure cylinder 13 with its piston rod 16 engages at a pivot point 17 of the laterally bent pivot lever 10.
  • the two pressure cylinders 12 and -13 are mounted in pendulum fashion in the carriage in the same vertical plane as the pivot shaft 6 in spherical bearings 18, 19 whereby a very compact construction of the turning apparatus is provided.
  • the roller 11 terminates at the plane 5a of the roller table.
  • the pivot lever 7 whose turning roller shaft is at a greater distance from the common pivot shaft 6, is formed as a yoke in order that it may be swung without interference through the pivot lever 10 into the dot and dash position 7 in which its turning roller comes to rest in the position '8' below the rolling plane 5a. From FIGURE 1 it may be seen that the two pivot levers overlie somewhat in their axial projection in this pivot position in which the roller table is free. Due to the increased pivot lift of the pivot lever 7 obtained in this manner an additional raising and lowering device for the tilting apparatus is not necessary.
  • the turner of the invention is particularly applicable for use in association with tipping tables for three-high frames and, as the carriage 1 is movable laterally of the roller table, the turner can be moved into the desired position for feeding the rolled material into roll grooves of a selected size.
  • the rolled material such as rods and the like is conveyed over rollers 5 of the roller table in a direction transverse to the axis of the rollers 5 as viewed in FIGURE 2.
  • turning roller v11 has been moved into the solid line position with the upper surface of the roller 11 in the same horizontal plane as the upper surface of the rollers 5.
  • the turning roller 8 has been swung down or even swung back into the dotted line retracted position of FIGURE 1 to permit, as shown in the example of FIGURE 1, a rod of square cross-sectional shape or profile to be moved over the rollers 5 onto the roller 11.
  • the pivot lever 7 is then pivoted upwardly above the roller table plane 5a by means of the cylinder 12 to clamp the rolled material therebetween.
  • the clamped rolled material may then be turned by pivoting of the levers 7, 10 together, for instance, to the right as reviewed in FIGURE 1 to turn or rotate the rolled material through the selected angle.
  • the carriage 1 may also be moved transversely of the roller table with the rolled rod clamped between the rollers 8, 11 to the desired position in front of the selected groove in the three-high frame while reversing the direction of movement of the roller table rollers 5 and while the tipping table changes its vertical position.
  • the rollers 8, 11 are retracted below the roller table plane a so that the rolled material may be moved transversely of the table without turning by other means (not shown).
  • the angle through which the rolled material is turned is directly related to the desired profile of the rolled material.
  • the square profile material illustrated in FIGURE 1 would have to be turned by 90 for subsequently introduction into tbox grooves in the rolls of the following rolling frame, from the other side of which emerges the rolled material with a rectangular profile.
  • the rolled material is then turned again 90 and subse quently introduced into square grooves in the rolls of a rolling frame for the final pass. Where the sequence of passes is square-oval, only a 45 turn is made between passes.
  • Tongs type turning apparatus for rolled material arranged to be associated with a roller table having a plurality of rotatable rollers comprising, in combination a carriage, means for moving said carriage transversely of said roller table, a pivot shaft supported on said carriage below the horizontal plane defined by the upper surfaces of said roller table rollers, a pair of pivot levers pivotally mounted on said pivot shaft, a turning roller on each of said pivot levers for movement by said pivot lever in a common vertical plan for clamping rolled material therebetween, a pair of fluid pressure actuated cylinders pivotally mounted on said carriage below said pivot shaft in vertically extending side-by-side relationship and means for operatively connecting each of said cylinders to an associated pivot lever for pivoting said pivot levers to move said turning rollers into clamping engagement with said rolled material and into a retracted position below said roller table horizontal plane.
  • a turning apparatus in accordance with claim 1 wherein the turning roller on one of said pivot levers is positioned at a greater distance from said pivot shaft than the other turning roller, said one pivot lever formed as a yoke having spaced leg portions, bearing means on the free ends of said yoke leg portions for rotatably mounting said one pivot lever on said pivot shaft and bearing means on said other pivot lever for pivotally mounting said other lever on said pivot shaft between said yoke bearing means.
