UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT M. FRYER, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE CARBON GASKET COMPANY.
COFFlN.
ESPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed September 10, 1R85.
To all wiz/0m, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT M. FRYER, a citizen ofthe United States, anda resident of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Cofns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in providing a coffin or casket with a complete lining ot' charcoal, in the form of slabs formed of pulverized charcoal with adhesive material, and pressed or molded, or of boards or slabs charred or treated by destructive distillation.
The object of my invention is to provide a coffin or casket with a lining` ot' such charcoal as to preserve the shape of the coiiin and prevent collapse after the outside or body shall have decayed or fallen oft", and which shall at the same time serve as an absorbent for the noxious gases which arise from a body before burial, so that muchV of the'danger arising from such emissions may be avoided in cases of death from contagious diseases.
In the drawings, Figurel represents a crosssection of a coffin provided with this charcoal lining. Fig. 2 is a top View of the same, with Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the bed removed. the top or lid.
In the drawings, B represents the coffin as a whole, which is of the usual form.
A represents a lining ot' charcoal in the Patent No. 340,038, lated April 13,1886.
Serial No. 176,695. (No mod l'.)
form of slabs, which are secured to and cover the inner surface of the coflin or casket and its cover. These slabs may be formed by 3 5 mixing pulver-ized charcoal with any adhesive substance and then pressing or molding the mass, or by char-ring boards or slabs by a method which need not be described here, as
it forms subiect-matterfor a separate appli- 4o cation which I intend to make for Letters Patent of the United States. These slabs, by whatever method produced, are attached to the body of the cotlin or casket by any suitablemeans-ascement,screws,bolts,orrivets- 45 in such relation to each other as to produce close joints at their meeting edges, as at D, and these `joints may be further tightened by gaskets of rubber or other suitable material placed between the same.
Vhat I here claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A coffin or casket provided with a lining of charcoal in the form of slabs secured to the 55 inner surface, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name,in presence ot' two witnesses, this 8th day of September, 1885.
ROBT. M. FRYER. Vitnesses:
WILLIAM H. CLARKsoN, M. I. MCGUIRE.
