UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE EDXVARD M. PIKE AND JOSEPH I3. SCHOPP, OF CHENOA, ILLINOIS.
TILE AND POTTERY KILN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,003, dated April 13, 1886.
Application filed October .26, 1895. Serial No. 180,912. (No model.l
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD M. P11; E and JosEPH B. Sonorr. citizens of the United States, residing at Ghenoa, in the county of McLean and State of lllinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Pettery-Kilns. of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improve meals in kilns for burning earthenware; and it has for its objects to provide a kiln which will be economical in the consun'iption of fuel and in which the artichs may be more thoroughly and uniformly burned than heretofore. These objects we obtain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a central vertical sectional view of the improved kiln.taken on the line .c 00 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 a horizontal sectional view ot'the furnace. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a portion of thei'urnace, showing the door-frame and the means of securing the encircling bands to the same.
The letter A indicates a kiln, which is constructed of brick-work or any other suitable material. The lower portion or substructure of the kiln, indicatcd by the letter a,is greater in diameter than the upper portion, and in the walls of the said snbstruclure are formed the fire-chambers I5,w11ich have vertical tines C, extending upward and terminating in the upper part of the kiln. The kiln is cylindricat in form. and is provided with a domeshaped crown, D, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The substructure or lower part of the kiln is constructed with a circular or annular flue, E, which extends entirely around it, and with cross'llues F, connecting with said circular flue. These fines connect with a transverse diametrical flue. G, which leads outward to a smoke-stack, H.
The letter I indicates the floor of the kiln, which is constructed of tire-brick, and which is located between the su bstrnctu re and superstructure of the same. The said floor is built of fire-bricks so laid as to leave interstices K, by means of which communication is established between the upper and lower portions of the kiln. The door of the kiln is provided with an arched iron frame, L, to which is attached, at proper intervals and by suitable Il1GtlllS,tl series of metallic bands, M, which extend around the kiln and bind the walls securely together. It will be seen that as thus constructed the kiln is a downdraft kiln.and that the tlaincs and products ofcombastion distribute themselves thoroughly around the articles, thus insuring the most uniform and perfect baking of the same.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pateat, is
1. The combination.with the superstructure, of the furnace having a series of furnaces, B, connecting with the upper part thereof, and the intervening tloor having tines I, the substructure bcing provided with an annular tlne, E, crosstlncs F, and transverse flue G, the latter leading to the smoke-stack. substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The combination, with the door of the furnace, of the iron frame L, located therein, and the bands extending around the furnace, the ends of said bands at the door being bent and fastened over the outer edge of the frame, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof we atfix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD M. PIKE. JOSEPH B. SOHUPP.
Witnesses J Us'rUs CASTLE, E. S. PIKE.
