Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
M. D. COHEN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN COVERINGS FOR THE HEAD.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,984, dated December 24, 1861.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, M. D. COHEN, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Garments; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents my invention as applied to the head and worn for the protection of the back of the head and ears. Fig. 2 shows a modification of the garment intended for the protection of the back of the head and the neck; and Fig. 3 represents another form of my improved head-garment for the protection of the back of the head, the neck, and the ears, the ear-flaps being made adjustable for the purposes hereinafter described.
It has heretofore been deemed necessary specially to construct caps or other head-garments for use in winter or for the protection of the ears, the neck, and the back of the head against cold, snow, or rain. Such caps were provided with fur or other wadded appliances, which, being folded within or around against the cap to which they were permanently attached, may be let down to afford the protection necessary to the exposed and sensitive parts'of the head. Those caps, besides being expensive, often prove a source of discomfort to the soldier, since they become hot and uncomfortable should the Weather moderate, and because the soldier cannot afford to have two caps- 1'. e., oneI for cold weather and one for mild weather.
The object of my invention, therefore, is to provide a protector of the nature described independent from and capable of being worn in connection with any headgarm en t7 whether of a military character or not; and it consists in the combination, with fur laps or their equivalents, of an elastic on adjustable belt in front and brace-bands of top of the head, substantially as hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I shall now proceed to describe it.
In the drawings, Fig. l represents a garment to be worn when the coat-collar of the wearer is sufficiently large to protect his neck. It is provided with iiaps A to protect the ears against cold, snow, &c. To the top and at the front ends of the garment an adjustable clasp or belt is fastened for the purpose of keeping the protector securely against and around the head. It may be made of indiarubber, or, if preferred, ot' leather, in two parts, with a buckle fixed upon one end to adjust it to the proper size. 'lo the top of the protector and to the clasp or belt are fastened four braces B to prevent the garment from slipping down. The ends of the flaps A may be tied under the chin by means of strings for the purpose of keeping them close to the ears when it is very cold. The garment is made of fur or its equivalent and lined on the outside with some water-proof material.
Another form of the garment, to be used with a coat the collar of which is not large enough to protect the neck of the wearer, is shown in Fig. 2. It consists of an apron sufiiciently large to protect the back of the head, neck, and ears. It is provided with an adjustable belt, braces, and strings, as that shown in Fig. l. This modification of protector may be made attachable to the coat, so that it may be adjusted to it to serve the purpose of a collar when necessary.
Fig. 3 represents a garment in which the flaps are detachable from and adjustable to the back apron. The object of this is to enable the wearer to use the ear-iiaps with or without collar. Vhen it is desired to keep the ears warm, the flaps are fastened to the apron by means of the hook and eye C, and the strings E are tied under orover the chin. The latter mode is shown in red lines. By thus tying the strings the hearing will not be interfered with.
IjIavin g thus described my invention, I shall state my claim as follows:
The combination, with fur laps and apron, or either, of an elastic or adjustable belt in front and brace-bands on top, arranged in 4lie manner and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification before two subscribing witnesses.
M. D. COHEN.
