Description

March. 22, 1932. V CHISHOLM 1,850,496
PROTECTIVE CHEST GARMENT Filed April 24. 1930 I W INVENTOR Mi ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 22, 1932 KRRON B. CHISHOLM, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY PROTECTIVE CHEST GARMENT Application filed April 24,
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in that type of garment which is designed to protect the wearer against colds, pleurisy, sudden chills and the like, and to prevent aggravation of injuries,
inflammations, especially those which affect the chest, shoulders, throat and lungs.
One of the most effective uses to which my improved garment can be put is to retain liquid, plastic or eifervescent drugs, Washes, poultices or lotions employed externally on the upper parts of the chest, back, shoulders, body or neck, the prolonged action of which is necessary and desirable in the treatment of the injury or ailment on the one side, and to protect the outer clothing from being soiled by such lotions or the like.
A further object of the invention is to providea garment or protector for a bruised, wounded, or ailing part of the upper body against further injury or infection, and to permit prolonged or continuous medication without soiling any other garment or garments worn, either by day or at night, or allowing ofl'ensive or disagreeable odors to escape into the surrounding air of the room or locality.
, Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined bythe appended claim. 1
Theinvention, in its preferred form is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front view showing the front of the garment in position upon the chest of a person, as adapted and applied for a heavy cold, sore throat, and other analogous ailments, without covering any other portion of the body.
Figure 2 is a back view showing means for sustaining the garment comfortably,. yet, firmly, in its desired position.
In these two views the protector is shown as provided with a collar portion, which is designed to be used under certain conditions, but, normally not employed, being readily detachable and attachable to the upper edge of the garment proper, so as to be readily detached when its presence is not required and 1930. Serial No. 446,815.
as easily applied when occasion may deem it advisable.
,7 Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in the two views.
In carrying out my invention I employ a cloth, medium or, in some cases, a heavy woolen cloth or knitted so as to fit snugly over the chest as seen in Figure 1, and se-' cured by means, such as strips of cords 2 secured at one end to the body portion 1 these strips or straps, or cords 2 are secured at one end to the body portion 1 in any suitable manner the cords or strips which are secured at one end to the shoulder portions being designed to be crossed as seen at 3 in Figure 2, and the free ends tied or otherwise secured to the ends of the cords or the like 4, as at 5, see Figure 2. Other straps or cords 6 are shown in Figure 2 the ends of which are tied as at 7, the said cords or the like being secured at their other ends to the portion 1 at the edges of the same as will be readily understood upon reference -to Figure 2.
The device just described may he applied to the back as well as to the front,as will be readily understood.
In somecases, as for instance when it is desired further to treat the throat or larynx I provide a'collar 8 of suitable material which may bedetachably secured to the upper edge of the body portion 1 in any suitable manner, such, for instance, as seen at 9 in Figure 1, the ends of the collar being secured at the back as by means 10 of any desired form.
The member or body portion 1 is made preferably of a material impervious'to moisture, such as flannel or other material impervious to moisture, such, for instance, a material adapted to permit the escape of perspiration without admitting cold air to the feverish or heated flesh of the patient.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What is claimed as newis:
A protective chest garment of washable material of a nature to permit the escape of moisture and a preventive to the admission r of cold air to the body of the wearer; the
